Ludger Pries explores the important moral, social and political challenge facing Europe and the international community: the protection of refugees as one of the most vulnerable groups on the planet. During the 1930s, thousands of social scientists fled the Nazi regime or other totalitarian European regimes, mainly towards the Americas. The New School for Social Research (NSSR) in New York City and El Colegio de Mexico (Colmex) in Mexico City both were built based on receiving exiled academics from Europe. Comparing the first twenty years of these organizations, this book offers a deeper understanding of the corresponding institutional contexts and impacts of emigrated, exiled and refugeed academics. It analyses the ambiguities of scientists' situations between emigration, return-migration and transnational life projects and examines the corresponding dynamics of application, adaptation or amalgamation of (travelling) theories and methods these academics brought. Despite its institutional focus, it also deals with the broader context of forced migration of intellectuals and scientists in the second half of the last century in Europe and Latin America. In so doing, the book invites a deeper understanding of the challenges of forced migration for scholars in the 21st century.

In diesem Band bearbeiten Soziologinnen und Soziologen die Frage nach dem Verhaltnis von Vielfalt und Zusammenhalt im 21. Jahrhundert. Dabei werden aus unterschiedlichen Blickwinkeln zum Teil stark variierende Antworten gegeben. Gemeinsamer Bezugspunkt ist dabei die soziologische Annahme, dass Vielfalt und Zusammenhalt nicht in einem prinzipiellen Gegensatz zueinander stehen. Vielmehr istalle sozial relevante Vielfalt immer auch gesellschaftlich, also durch sozialen Zusammenhalt hergestellte Vielfalt. Gegen unkritisch-pauschale optimistische oder pessimistische Beurteilungen zunehmender Vielfalt fur gesellschaftlichen Zusammenhalt werden spezifische Bedingungen herausgearbeitet, unter denen Vielfalt fur Einzelgruppen und Gesellschaften als Chance oder als Herausforderung zu sehen ist."

Ahnlich wie vor etwas mehr als einem Jahrzehnt die Begriffe "global" und "Globalisierung" scheinen heute die Termini "transnational" und "Transnationalisierung" zu viel gebrauchten Modebegriffen zu werden. Sollen damit alle grenzuberschreitenden sozialen Beziehungen bezeichnet werden und wird Transnationalisierung damit ein neuer Catch-All-Begriff? Oder ist mit Transnationalismus ein bestimmtes und durchaus serioses Forschungsprogramm gemeint?
Vor dem Hintergrund eigener langjahriger theoretischer und empirischer Studien zum Thema zeigt Ludger Pries, dass sich die Art und Weise zwischenmenschlichen Zusammenlebens, die Vergesellschaftung der Menschen, immer starker transnationalisiert. Damit ist Transnationalisierung eine wichtige Form der Internationalisierung von Vergesellschaftung, die unser 21. Jahrhundert sehr stark bestimmen wird. Viele Menschen mit Migrationshintergrund schliessen sich in Organisationen wie z.B. Kultur- oder Sportvereinen, politisch oder ethnisch orientierten Gruppen, Elternverbanden oder Moscheegemeinden zusammen. Welche Rolle spielen hierbei grenzuberschreitend tatige Migrantenorganisationen - fur deren Mitglieder und fur die 'Mehrheitsgesellschaft'? Dienen sie vorrangig der Bewahrung von Identitat aus der Herkunftsgesellschaft oder foerdern sie die Integration in die Ankunftsgesellschaft? In der neueren Forschung wird diese 'entweder-oder'-Perspektive zunehmend um eine 'sowohl-als-auch'-Sichtweise erweitert: Viele Migrantenorganisationen uberspannen Grenzen im doppelten - geographischen und sozialraumlichen - Sinn. Sie schaffen transnationale Sozialraume und beeinflussen sowohl Ankunfts- wie auch Herkunftsgesellschaften. Der Band integriert Ergebnisse aus aktuellen Studien zu Selbstverstandnis, Arbeitsweise und Funktion von grenzuberschreitend tatigen Migrantenorganisationen.

Ausgangspunkt dieser Arbeit ist die seit etwa Anfang der 80er Jahre in den Sozialwissenschaften, vor allem in der Industriesoziologie, aber auch unter Praktikern aus der Politik, den Gewerkschaften, dem betrieblichen Management, dem Arbeitsmarkt-und Bildungsbereich etc. gefuhrte Diskussion, die sich in einer ersten Annaherung durch Schlagworte wie "Dritte Industrielle Revolution," "Umbruch von Technik und Arbeit," "Ende des Taylorismus," "mikroelektronische Revolution" oder "Neuer Typ systemischer Rationalisierung" umschreiben lasst. Hierbei geht es letztlich um die Frage, wie die besondere Qualitat, die Fonn und die Richtung der gegenwartigen industriellen und betrieblichen Wandlungsprozesse zu verstehen, zu erklaren und zu beurteilen sind. Auf der Grundlage umfangreichen empirischen Materials werden die aktuellen betrieblichen Umbruchprozesse in Anlehnung an U. Becks Konzept des Ubergangs von der Industriegesellschaft zur "Risikogesellschaft" als reflexive Modemisierung interpretiert. Hierauf aufbauend wird ein Vorschlag zur Weiterentwicklung des konzeptionellen sozialwissenschaftlichen Betriebsverstand nisses entwickelt und der Betrieb als Handlungseinheit der stofflichen und sozialen Transfonnation von Wirklichkeit gefasst. Die Arbeit versteht sich als Beitrag zur Empirie und Theorie betrieblicher Wandlungsprozesse."

Nachstehend legen wir fUr das im Rahmen des Programms "Mensch und Technik - Sozialvertragliche Technikgestaltung" durchgefiihrte Projekt 'Modernisierung der Produktionstechnik und soziale Differenzierung' den zweiten Teil des AbschluBberichts vor. Der erste Teil enthielt die sieben Branchenexpertisen, die wesentlicher Gegenstand unseres Verbundprojekts waren, sowie die zusatzlich von uns eingeholten Korreferate (Pries/Schmidt/Trinczek 1989). In diesem zweiten Berichts- teil folgt unsere brancheniibergreifende Auswertung und Interpretation des vorliegenden Materials. Dabei wurde Teil II, III, VI und der Anhang I von Ludger Pries bearbeitet, Teil V und der Anhang II von Rudi Schmidt und Teil IV von Rainer Trinczek. Die Inhalte trag en wir selbstverstandlich gemeinsam. An dem Projekt waren neben den Verfassern zeitweilig Peter Ellguth, Joachim Soyez und Elisabeth Werner-Hager als wissenschaftliche, Ingrid Artus, Aida Bosch, Manuela Kral und Markus Promberger als studenti- sche Mitarbeiter beteiligt. Der wissenschaftliche Rat Werner Mangolds war uns wahrend der gesamten Projektlaufzeit eine wertvolle Hilfe; ohne seine kundige Unterstiitzung bei der institutionell nieht immer einfachen Projektabwicklung ware unsere Arbeit manches Mal gefahr- lich ins Stocken geraten. Im Rahmen einer Verbundstudie haben die Autoren anhand von sieben Industriebranchen die sozialen Chancen und Risiken betrieblicher Rationalisierung fur Industriearbeit untersucht. In den hier vorgelegten Branchenexpertisen und den zusatzlichen Materialien wird ein differenziertes Bild der deutschen Industrielandschaft entworfen. Dies ermoglicht eine in dieser Breite bislang nicht verfugbare Gesamtschau."

This book examines the role that European employee representatives play in the restructuring of firms. In a globalized economy, company internationalization and transnational restructuring are of growing concern for employees and trade unions. In the European Union, the still rather new institution of European works councils provides basic rights for employees. Using examples of eight large automotive manufacturers like Volkswagen, GM or Toyota, the volume analyzes the internationalization strategies of the companies and the effects of European works councils, pointing to a high degree of variation in strategies and effectiveness of cross-border employee representation.
