The Solitudes (Paperback): Luis de Gongora The Solitudes (Paperback)
Luis de Gongora; Introduction by Alberto Manguel; Translated by Edith Grossman
R401 R351 Discovery Miles 3 510 Save R50 (12%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

An epic masterpiece of world literature, in a magnificent new translation by one if the most acclaimed translators of our time. A towering figure of the Renaissance, Luis de Gongora pioneered poetic forms so radically different from the dominant aesthetic of his time that he was derided as "the Prince of Darkness." The Solitudes, his magnum opus, is an intoxicatingly lush novel-in-verse that follows the wanderings of a shipwrecked man who has been spurned by his lover. Wrenched from civilization and its attendant madness, the desolate hero is transported into a natural world that is at once menacing and sublime. In this stunning edition Edith Grossman captures the breathtaking beauty of a work that represents one of the high points of poetic achievement in any language. Luis de Gongora (1561-1627) is among the most prominent figures of the Spanish Golden Age. Edith Grossman is the acclaimed translator of Don Quixote, as well as books by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Mario Vargas Llosa, and Carlos Fuentes. She is the recipient of the inaugural Queen Sofia Spanish Institute Translation Prize, the PEN/Ralph Manheim Medal for Translation, and a Guggenheim fellowship. Alberto Manguel is the bestselling author of dozens of books, including A History of Reading and The Dictionary of Imaginary Places.

Poesias - Polifemo, Soledades and Other Poems (Paperback): Luis de Gongora Poesias - Polifemo, Soledades and Other Poems (Paperback)
Luis de Gongora; Edited by J W Barker
R927 Discovery Miles 9 270 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Recognising the need for a convenient edition of Gongora for English readers and students, Dr J. W. Barker has here prepared a selection which, in addition to showing Gongora's versatility and proneness to experiment in verse forms, makes available a number of poems to be read with delight for their music, beauty, and simple yet artificial charm. The poems are dated and chronologically arranged to enable the critical reader to assess the worth of Gongora's poetry, and to judge independently the emergence and development of the style called gongorismo. This collection was first published in 1942.

The Solitudes of Don Luis De Gongora - A Text with Verse Translation (Paperback): Don Luis de Gongora The Solitudes of Don Luis De Gongora - A Text with Verse Translation (Paperback)
Don Luis de Gongora; Translated by Edward Meryon Wilson
R929 Discovery Miles 9 290 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Professor Wilson's translation of the Soleades was first published in Cambridge in 1931 by Gordon Fraser's Minority Press. This revised edition, with the Spanish text added, was published by Cambridge University Press in 1965. In the first place, Gongora is 'difficult', and therefore, fifty students first embarking on the study were glad of the help with 'meaning' which an English version provides. But Professor Wilson's is a translation in the full sense of the word, not just a crib. Its verse follows the varied movement and elaborate structure of the original, and creates an English equivalent of the musical qualities of the Spanish. It gives pleasure of a high order as well as understanding, and was one of the few English versions of the time which approached the status of art. It was therefore of importance for students of translation itself.

Selected Poems of Luis de Gongora - A Bilingual Edition (Paperback, Bilingual ed.): Luis de Gongora Selected Poems of Luis de Gongora - A Bilingual Edition (Paperback, Bilingual ed.)
Luis de Gongora; Translated by John Dent-Young
R709 Discovery Miles 7 090 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Making Luis de Gongora's work available to contemporary English-language readers without denying his historical context, Selected Poems of Luis de Gongora presents him as not only one of the greatest and most complex poets of his time, but also the funniest and most charismatic. From longer works, such as "The Fable of Polyphemus and Galatea," to shorter ballads, songs, and sonnets, John Dent-Young's free translations capture Gongora's intensely musical voice and transmit the individuality and self-assuredness of the poet. Substantial introductions and extensive notes provide personal and historical context, explain the ubiquitous puns and erotic innuendo, and discuss translation choices. A significant edition of this seminal and challenging poet, Selected Poems of Luis de Gongora will find an eager audience among students of poetry and scholars studying the history and literature of Spain.

Luis De Gongora y Argote
R412 Discovery Miles 4 120 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Luis De Gongora y Argote; Volume editing by Philip Polack; Luis de Gongora
R924 Discovery Miles 9 240 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The aim of this edition is to make the poem approachable to those who are coming at Gongora, or Spanish Golden Age poetry, for the first time, and to help them understand and enjoy it. Fusing epic and pastoral, the poem describes a journey through the countryside and contrasts the beauty of nature and of the rural crafts and customs with the vices of court, commercial greed and colonial exploitation. This edition, with its literal verse translation, aims to make the poem available to anyone with a reading knowledge of Spanish, or even without.
