Though less well-known than Joao Gilberto, both Luiz Bonfa and Laurindo Almeida are important figures in the development of Brazilian guitar music. Laurinda, the elder, came to prominence in the 1940s, and established his career as a versatile musician as adept at film soundtracks as at bossa nova. Bonfa had a more samba-influenced style, and his recordings here, which date from the mid '50s, are exceptional. GUITAR MUSIC OF BRAZIL provides a fine service in bringing a sampling of these two Brazilian jazz giants.
