The humble and industrious dung beetle is a marvellous beast: the 6 000 species identified so far are intricately entwined with human history and scientific endeavour.
These night-soil collectors of the planet have been worshipped as gods, worn as jewellery, and painted by artists. More practically, they saved Hawaii from ecological blight, and rescued Australia from plagues of flies. They fertilise soil, cleanse pastures, steer by the stars, and have a unique relationship with the African elephant (along with many other ungulates). Above all, they are the ideal subject for biological study in an evolving world.
In this sweeping history of more than 3 000 years, beginning with Ancient Egypt, scientist Marcus Byrne and writer, Helen Lunn capture the diversity of dung beetles and their unique behaviour patterns. Dung beetles’ fortunes have followed the shifts from a world dominated by a religion that symbolically incorporated them into some of its key concepts of rebirth, to a world in which science has largely separated itself from religion and alchemy.
With over 6 000 species found throughout the world, these unassuming but remarkable creatures are fundamental to some of humanity’s most cherished beliefs and have been ever present in religion, art, literature, science and the environment. They are at the centre of current gene research, play an important role in keeping our planet healthy, and some nocturnal dung beetles have been found to navigate by the starry skies. Outlining the development of science from the point of view of the humble dung beetle is what makes this charming story of immense interest to general readers and entomologists alike. This entertaining outline of the development of science from the the beetle’s perspective will enchant general readers and entomologists alike.
This is a small anthology of prose and poetry giving an insight
into the mindset of artists living on the island of Hydra in Greece
mainly in the mid 1980s. The doyen being the prolific English
painter Anthony Kingsmill-Lunn 1926-1993 who studied at the Ecole
de Paris under Andre Lothe and was an influential member of the
Soho set in London and of the Hydra artist colony in the 1960s.

The focus of this book is to explore teachers' evolving personal
epistemologies, or the beliefs we hold about the origin and
development of knowledge in the context of teaching. The chapters
focus on a range of conceptual frameworks about how university and
field?based experiences influence the connections between teachers'
personal epistemologies and teaching practice. In an earlier volume
we investigated preservice and inservice teachers' beliefs and
teaching practices (Brownlee, Schraw and Berthelsen, 2011). While
we addressed the nature of teachers' personal epistemologies,
learning and teaching practices, and approaches for changing
beliefs throughout teacher education programs, the volume did not
address conceptual frameworks for the development of teacher's
personal epistemologies. To address this gap, the book is focused
on teacher educators, teachers and teacher education programmers in
universities with an overall aim of highlighting how we might
support preservice teachers' involvement in learning that is
challenging and inservice teachers' engagement in professional
experiences that promote changes in teaching practice. We argue
that teachers need to be encouraged to question their beliefs and
develop increasingly sophisticated beliefs about their knowledge
and their students' knowledge that facilitate learning and
intellectual growth.
This study tackles the neglected subject of word order in biblical
Hebrew poetry. The fact that the order of clause constituents
frequently differs from that found in prose has often been noted,
but no systematic attempt has been offered by way of explanation.
Here two separate factors are taken into consideration: that of
purely poetic variation (defamiliarisation), and that of pragmatic
markedness. This work offers a new approach to the poetry of the
Old Testament that will aid towards more accurate translation,
exegesis, and discourse analysis of poetic texts.
Recognising veiled allusions to the Old Testament in the four
Gospels has long contributed to our understanding of the Gospels
message. Nicholas Lunn takes the investigation of allusion a
significant step further in The Gospels Through Old Testament Eyes.
He explores allusions not just in isolated verses, but rather
occurring throughout whole passages, demonstrating that many Gospel
episodes interact with specific Old Testament accounts through an
extended sequence of allusions. Furthermore, his examination is not
restricted to episodes presented by a single Gospel, but includes
allusions distributed across two or more Gospel treatments of the
same event. In The Gospels Through Old Testament Eyes, Lunn offers
a series of self-contained studies that bring to light allusions,
many of them previously unnoted, that affirm the intricate
interweaving of New Testament texts with those of the Old. This
volume will greatly enhance your appreciation of the Gospels'
presentation of Jesus's life and ministry. It will inform and equip
scholars, pastors, preachers, Bible teachers and readers to
appreciate new depths in the Gospels.
This book explores intersections of theory and practice to engage
queer theory and education as it happens both in and beyond the
university. Furthering work on queer pedagogy, this volume brings
together educators and activists who explore how we see, write,
read, experience, and, especially, teach through the fluid space of
queerness. The editors and contributors are interested in how
queer-identified and -influenced people create ideas, works,
classrooms, and other spaces that vivify relational and
(eco)systems thinking, thus challenging accepted hierarchies,
binaries, and hegemonies that have long dominated pedagogy and
praxis.
The works of Ambrosiaster, a Christian writing in Rome in the late
fourth century, were influential on his near contemporaries and
throughout the Middle Ages. In the first half of her study, Sophie
Lunn-Rockliffe addresses the problem of the author's mysterious
identity (which scholars have puzzled over for centuries) and
places him in a broad historical and intellectual context. In the
second half she addresses Ambrosiaster's political theology, an
idea which has been explored in other late Roman Christian writers
but which has never been addressed in his works. She looks at how
Ambrosiaster's attitudes to social and political order were formed
on the basis of theological concepts and the interpretation of
scripture, and shows that he espoused a rigid hierarchical and
monarchical organization in the church, society, and the Roman
empire. He also traced close connections between the Devil,
characterized as a rebel against God, and the earthly tyrants and
usurpers who followed his example.
