Ernst Junger (1895-1998) ist ein bedeutender Reprasentant der
deutschen Geistesgeschichte des 20. Jahrhunderts. Sein
umfangreiches Werk polarisiert bis heute Literaturkritik und
OEffentlichkeit, insbesondere wegen des z. T. mit Gewalt
verherrlichenden Tendenzen beschworenen, aus seiner
Nietzsche-Rezeption erwachsenen 'heroischen Nihilismus' des
Fruhwerks. Gleichzeitig machen ihn seine Sprach- und
Beobachtungskunst, u. a. in seinen Reiseberichten und Tagebuchern,
Beitrager sind u. a.
Junger-Kenner wie Josef Furnkas, Helmut Lethen, Hans-Harald Muller
und Karl Prumm. Der Band stellt eine facettenreiche Gesamtschau der
aktuellen Junger-Forschung dar und perspektiviert das wirkmachtige
Werk des bedeutenden Schriftstellers mit wissenschaftlicher
Sachlichkeit neu.
This collective volume interprets the texts of Fallada as an
expression of the ideology of life which was typical for
thebeginnings of themodern period (c. 1890?1955) ? thus
differentiating itself distinctly from common analysis practice:
The extreme conditions of the protagonists between emphatic and
reduced life or the repeated changes of life within a biological
life can be explained by this narrative structure and no longer
need the recourse to autobiography, although it is true that here
someone seems to have lived according to the modern model of
living? as if it were literature."

Throughout his life Ernst Junger tried to identify a significance
behind all that happens, even if this should be revealed as
dreadful or imbued with some alien meaning . The conference
proceedings investigate this search for a historically and
ideologically acceptable meaning of both general and personal
experience. The volume aims to consider both Junger s political
esthetics and his perception of language in the light of the
philosophical tradition and the literary conflict between the
Romantic and the Modern, following his development from the war
diaries through the political journalism of the period between the
world wars to the narrative works of the contemporary period. The
proposition set out here is that Junger s work represents cultural
practices of life and survival, constantly shifting between combat
and art and indeed in such a way that both ideological and esthetic
aspects are granted equal consideration."
