A darkly humorous, surprising and poignant novel about a guy who
works in Hell who must collect one more soul to earn his freedom.
Peyote Trip has a pretty good gig in the deals department on the
fifth floor of Hell. Sure, none of the pens work and the coffee
machine has been out of order for a century, but Pey has a
plan—and all he needs is one last member of the Harrison family
to sell their soul. When the Harrisons retreat to the family lake
house for the summer, with their daughter Mickey’s precocious new
friend in tow, the opportunity Pey has waited a millennium for
might finally be in his grasp. And with the help of his charismatic
coworker Calamity, he sets a plan in motion. But things aren’t
always as they seem, on Earth or in Hell. And as old secrets and
new dangers scrape away at the Harrisons’ shiny surface,
revealing the darkness beneath, everyone must face the consequences
of their choices.
This book digs into the complex archaeology of empathy illuminating
controversies, epistemic problems and unanswered questions
encapsulated within its cross-disciplinary history. The authors ask
how a neutral innate capacity to directly understand the actions
and feelings of others becomes charged with emotion and moral
values associated with altruism or caregiving. They explore how the
discovery of the mirror neuron system and its interpretation as the
neurobiological basis of empathy has stimulated such an enormous
body of research and how in a number of these studies, the moral
values and social attitudes underlying empathy in human perception
and action are conceptualized as universal traits. It is argued
that in the humanities the historical, cultural and scientific
genealogies of empathy and its forerunners, such as Einfuhlung,
have been shown to depend on historical preconditions, cultural
procedures, and symbolic systems of production. The multiple
semantics of empathy and related concepts are discussed in the
context of their cultural and historical foundations, raising
questions about these cross-disciplinary constellations. This
volume will be of interest to scholars of psychology, art history,
cultural research, history of science, literary studies,
neuroscience, philosophy and psychoanalysis.
The Invention of China in Early Modern England describes how
several different English communities became aware of China. It
begins by describing how early modern intellectuals used the
utopian ideal of China to license all kinds of progressive
innovation before chronicling how England's growing commerce in
southeast Asia radically changed China's representation in the
English discourse community. For the new community of English
merchants proposing to trade in Chinese goods, China became the
seminal example in the growing discourse community of English
Orientalism. It was an absolute or arbitrary authoritarian state,
associated with crooked business dealings, and cloaked in a
rhetoric of secrecy and exclusion-a dangerous exception to the
traditions, values, and identities of the emergent English speaking
states. Finally, the book points out some of the ways that
contemporary English language sources continue to represent this
early modern English thought tradition, labelling the complexities
of modern China with analytical vocabulary perhaps better suited to
the pressing political anxieties of the seventeenth century.
The study of finite simple groups has seen considerable progress
since their classification and much more is now known about the
internal structure of the sporadic groups. Brauer trees present a
means of computing certain important properties of these groups and
their calculation typically relies upon large-scale computations.
This volume collects together for the first time the Brauer trees
of the sporadic simple groups and their covering groups, as far as
they are known. The authors first describe the construction of
Brauer trees and the principal methods for their computation. The
rest of the book is then devoted to the description of the trees
and the associated block information and projective tables.
Consequently, this volume should serve as an invaluable reference
work for all research workers whose work involves the study of
finite simple groups.
The purpose of the science of complexity is to provide, if not a
unified approach, at least useful tools to tackling complex
problems in various scientific domains. Generally, complexity is
considered a fundamental challenge to the reductionist approach in
science as a whole and to its ideas of certainty and
randomness.
The overall behaviour of a complex system is different from and
more than the sum of its parts. The behaviour of non-linear complex
systems depends on the interaction (often with retroactive effects)
among its constituent parts and not so much (or not only) on the
characteristics of these parts themselves; the sum of the behaviour
of single parts does not necessarily provide us with an explanation
of the aggregate behaviour of a system.
All this is true for economic systems. These are based on the
activities of single economic agents. Each individual can obtain
only partial knowledge that is focussed around its "world" (local
information) and react to external shocks in different ways (local
rationality).
The aim of this book is to provide an overview to recent
developments in theory and empirical research that view economic
systems as complex phenomena whose aggregate dynamics can often not
be inferred from its microscopic (microeconomic) building blocks.
The collection of papers represented in this volume is dedicated to
the memory of Massimo Salzano, who has been a fervent and eloquent
advocate of the complexity approach.
The contributions have been presented at a conference held to
celebrate Massimo's 60th birthday (Ecople -Economics: From
Tradition of Complexity, Capri, 2-4 June, 2006), one year before he
unexpectedly passed away in 2007.
Research in the field of multimedia metadata is especially
challenging: Lots of scientific publications and reports on
research projects are published every year and the range of
possible applications is diverse and huge. This book gives an
overview on fundamental issues within the field of multimedia
metadata focusing on contextualized, ubiquitous, accessible and
interoperable services on a higher semantic level. The book in hand
provides a selection of basic articles being a base for multimedia
metadata research. Furthermore it presents a view on the current
state of the art in multimedia metadata research. It provides
information from versatile applications domains (Broadcasting,
Interactive TV, E-Learning and Social Software) such as: Multimedia
on the Web 2.0 - Databases for Multimedia (Meta-)Data - Multimedia
Information Retrieval and Evaluation - Multimedia Metadata
Standards - Ontologies for Multimedia.
The multimedia metadata community
(www.multimedia-metadata.info), wherefrom this book originated,
brings together experts from research and industry in the area of
multimedia metadata research and application development. The
community bridges the gap between an academic research and an
industrial scale development of innovative products. By summarizing
the work of the community this book contributes to the
aforementioned fields by addressing these topics for a broad range
of readers.
This is a basic examination of basic tax systems, for both
Layperson and Student. It describes the various forms of tax, both
historical and theoretical. It examines each in turn, bringing
insight to its advantages and hazards. The Author gives a cursory
study of tax impacts, the problems of tax collection, and the
amounts of revenue, which can be expected. The basic thesis of the
Work consists in the idea current American methods of tax form and
tax collection need serious revision. The Author attempts to
express why he holds this belief, the observed detriment to
economic performance of current tax placement, and the causes of
such economic disadvantage. He presents potential alterations to
the current tax intermix, suggesting consolidation of tax forms
would present savings in cost of tax collection, and ease of
payment to Taxpayers. He outlines his beliefs on the proper tax
system for American society.
The World faces complex problems, almost half consist of economic
issues; not currently being resolved by mainline economic thought.
The Author presents a short, but detailed Work; studying the
failings of current economic thought, with concentration on the
actual points of failure. He presents concise study of American
economic history, with specific expression the economic drives of
each period. He shows how current economic theories developed,
examines their basic premises, and comments on their failures to
fully explain economic forces. He advance the basic theories of Tax
Policy Economists, a revisionist view of Economics only recently
developed. He uses the basic understanding derived from the above
analysis, to examine the fallicies of present Government economic
policy, with expression of alternatives to this policy which can be
implemented in a fair and universal application setting. The Author
goes on to present an alternative Tax program for the federal
government, which actually furthers economic growth and expansion.
This book examines the scientific contribution and increasing
relevance of the Person-Centered Approach (PCA) in psychotherapy.
The direction taken in the book is to provide readers with a
multidisciplinary and multi-perspective view as well as practical
applications. Beyond the more conventional psychotherapy
applications (client-centered, experimental, emotion-focused,
child-centered, motivational interviewing, existential, filial,
etc.) others have evolved including peace and conflict resolution
work, encounter and T-groups, nonviolent communication, parent
effectiveness training, person-centered planning for people with
disabilities, relationship enhancement methods, learner-centered
education, technology-enhanced learning environments, human
relations leadership training, etc. Simultaneously, scientific
disciplines were influenced by this perspective in less obvious
ways. Hence, the major contribution of this book is to identify and
characterize the key bridges-so far only partly recognized- between
the PCA and several other disciplines. Based on the results of the
bridge-building endeavor, the editors will propose an initial
formulation of the PCA as a meta-theory. It is intended as a
generic framework to solve complex, social problems and to
stimulate further research and development concerning the human
species in relationship to its environment.

The nitrides and carbides of boron and silicon are proving to be an
excellent choice when selecting materials for the design of devices
that are to be employed under particularly demanding environmental
and thermal con- tions. The high degree of cross-linking, due to
the preferred coordination numbers of the predominantly covalently
bonded constituents equalling or exceeding three, lends these
non-oxidic ceramics a high kinetic stability, and is regarded as
the microscopic origin of their impressive thermal and mechanical
durability. Thus it does not come as a surprise that the chemistry,
the physical properties and the engineering of the corresponding
binary, ternary, and even quaternary compounds have been the
subject of intensive and sustained efforts in research and
development. In the five reviews presented in the volumes 101 and
102 of "Structure and Bonding" an attempt has been made to cover
both the essential and the most recent advances achieved in this
particular field of materials research. The scope of the individual
contributions is such as to address both graduate students,
specializing in ceramic materials, and all scientists in academia
or industry dealing with materials research and development. Each
review provides, in its introductory part, the chemical, physical
and, to some extent, historical background of the respective
material, and then focuses on the most relevant and the most recent
achievements.
This book presents an overview of private rented housing in
selected new EU member states and other transition countries - a
topic scarcely researched to date, as it is largely part of the
informal economy, and consequently often invisible to official
statistics. Part I presents the private rented sector in Western
and Northern European countries, the history of private renting
under socialism in Central and Eastern Europe, and thematic issues
such as restitution and marginalized groups depending on privately
rented housing. Part II provides a series of country case studies
from the Central and East European region. Part III concludes with
chapters on the possibility of utilizing the private rental sector
in affordable housing provision through good practices in both old
and new EU member states, and sets out to further the housing
policy debate on European housing regimes. This unique edited
collection will be of great value to scholars of and practitioners
involved in housing policy and economics, urban development,
international relations, politics, economics and sociology.

Independent children's rights institutions (ICRIs) have been
established across the world. Endorsed by the UN, they are
independent of their governments and endowed with legal powers. Yet
we know little about how ICRIs function. How do they work? What
impacts their success? What objectives do ICRIs seek to achieve?
The contributors to this edited collection provide first-hand
experiences in directing, working for, and studying ICRIs and
detail their unique, in-depth accounts of factors shaping ICRIs'
efforts to monitor and advance children's rights. Chapters examine
ICRIs in Belgium, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, the Netherlands,
Pakistan, and the United States, as well as an extraordinary
network of ICRIs, and introduce innovative ideas of how to think
about ICRIs' independence and legal powers. Offering perspectives
from across the world, this volume provides both theoretical and
practical insights on a crucial element of children's rights,
independent children's rights institutions. The Roles of
Independent Children's Rights Institutions in Advancing Human
Rights of Children is essential reading for students, researchers,
and scholars interested in studies of sociology of childhood, law
and society, children's rights, and human rights.
