Lyn Lifshin's mirror poems may be taken individually and as a suite. Few poets can extend a metaphor in so many directions. Lifshin's poetic power is evident in these imagistic variations on the theme of 'insight' in its many facets.
Poetry. Young Adult. The story of Malala and her struggles is gripping; this account is a work of poetry by Lyn Lifshin, an important American poet. This is not journalism, rather it is a work that is best suited for poetry, a deeply personal work where the poet reveals, through compassion and insight, some moments of revelation. The people it discusses are real, but the insights and details are poetic. The events in this book are contemporary and sometimes controversial and it is the poet's mandate to present the depth of her understanding and then allow the work to speak for itself.
Poetry. In her biggest, most varied selection of poems, A GIRL GOES INTO THE WOODS, Lyn Lifshin's intimate, intense, startling poems range from the adolescent experiences any young (or not so young) woman can identify with, to the roller coaster ride of agony to ecstasy of relationships. In her unique and magical way she explores the complicated, mysterious, ambivalent relationship between mothers and daughters, that constantly changing braid of pain and joy, of control and rebellion and then the reverse, as the daughter becomes the mother and the deaths of stages of the relationship continue. The book takes us into the immigrant experience, the ravages of Auschwitz, to Hiroshima, Vietnam, Iraq and September 11 as well as natural disasters like Katrina, the 2005 Indonesia tsunami, the Japanese tsunami and the 2010 Haiti earthquake. She lets us into the world of mad girls, Madonnas, dancers and shares secrets of poets from Robert Frost, who praised her early poems, to Dylan Thomas and Garcia Lorca. Lifshin gives us moments in Paris, Quebec, the Caribbean and Costa Rico and plunges us into the beauty of Southwestern ruins, quiet New England snowscapes, Midwestern roads with a radio playing and special moments with horses and cats, summer lakes and the firefly filled nights in the town in which she grew up.
Lyn Lifshin's poems explore the sexuality behind the dance - the real and imagined parts, together with the emotional frustrations and physical pain of trying for some form of artistic perfection make these poems relevant to anyone. Lyn's pointed, sensual and well-balanced poems create and define a metaphor for life that is universally meaningful.
Poetry. What we have mostly missed in all the reporting is the intimacy of a poet's voice who can bring the real right up inside us. Lyn Lifshin's volume of straightforward, exact poetry in KATRINA does this. There is a clear ungarnished force to her words that gives us the chance to bring our own sense of loss, grief and compassion into the lives of those who have been drawn into such an event.
Before his career as a champion racehorse, and his death following a devastating injury, Barbaro was a colt like any other. In her traditional poetic style, Lifshin outlines the life of the champion horse before his fame, highlighting the beauty and grace of the young colt from his birth, through his youth, and finally to his time as a champion on the track. The artistic rendering of Barbaro's life from his early years to his first races culminate in the celebration of his life after his death in this poetry collection. from "Those Nights in the Stall" did Barbaro dream horses galloping? In the dark, starless, did he feel the ground shaking? Imagine the sound of hooves on turf? Was there some thing in the wind? The scent of horses thundering past the barn, of flying manes, the beating of his own heart, louder than hooves?
A deeply emotional collection of poems that highlights the filly behind the legend of The Licorice Daughter, Ruffian. With tender care, Lifshin takes her readers through the too-short life of a racing wonder. Beginning before Ruffian’s birth, this collection outlines the anticipation of Ruffian’s greatness. With a grand focus on the days before her fame, from the quiet beauty of the April night of her birth to the brutal separation of the foals from their mares six months after, Lifshin highlights the potential that could be seen in Ruffian’s early days. From the relationships the filly formed with her trainer—Frank Whitely, to her grooms, jockeys, owners, and her devoted fans, this collection brings to life the early days of a racing legend. With excruciating care the last moments of Ruffian’s short life are laid bare before the reader, as the myth is born in the hours before her death.
This collection of poems captures the life and brilliance of one of racings biggest legends. In a lyrical style that brings the tale of Secretariat to life, Lifshin highlights the beauty and wonder of the foal's early days from birth to the track. As always, Lifshin focuses on Secretariat's life before the track, outlining the playfully perfect foal who found his way into the hearts of many. Full of emotion and beauty, this collection outlines the life and death of one of the tracks biggest racing legends. from "As The Days Get Longer" the horse dreams of flying in the air like a gust of wind on an abandoned Christmas tree, red exploding like a spurt of light, flaming wildly like those boughs of northern lights out of darkness
