It has become increasingly clear in recent years that, for all
their differences, the many varieties of thinking commonly grouped
together under the rubric of "postmodernism" share at least one
salient characteristic: they all depend upon a stereotyped account
of the Enlightenment. Postmodernity requires a "modernity" to be
repudiated and superseded, and the tenets of this modernity have
invariably been identified with the so-called Enlightenment
Project. This volume aims to explore critically the now
conventional opposition between Enlightenment and Postmodernity and
question some of the conclusions drawn from it.

Historical, theoretical and analytical studies of principally 19-20c topics, reflecting current musical research. This collection of nineteen essays, all by leaders in the field of music theory, reflects the rich diversity of topics and approaches currently being explored. The contributions fall within three principal areas of study that haveremained at the heart of the discipline. One is historical research, which includes efforts to trace the development of theoretical ideas and their philosophical bases. Representing this broad category are essays dealing with issues like Scriabin's mysticism, neoclassicism, modern aesthetics, and the development of the concept of pitch collection in twentieth-century theoretical writings. The second area embraces the theory and analysis of common-practicetonality and its associated repertoire (including chromatic and 'transitional' music). Within this category are several studies related directly to or derived from Schenkerian theory, covering repertoire from Bach through Schubert and Chopin to Gershwin. Complementing these articles are a study of a chromatic work by Liszt and an essay on Schoenberg's concept of tonality. The third broad category includes the large body of work associated with the theoryand analysis of post-tonal music. This book argues that "race" and "whiteness" are central to the construction of the modern world. Constructive Theology needs to take them seriously as primary theological problems. In doing so, Constructive Theology must fundamentally change its approach, and draw from the emerging field of Philosophy of Race. Christopher M. Baker develops a genealogy of race that understands "whiteness" as a kind secular soteriology, and develops a counternarrative theological method informed by resources from Philosophy of Race. He then deploys that method to read science fiction cinema and superhero stories as cultural, racial, and theological documents that can be critically engaged and redeployed as counternarratives to dominant racial narratives.

This book is part of a two volume set that examines prostitution and sex trafficking on a global scale, with each chapter devoted to a particular country in one of seven "geo-cultural" areas of the world. The 18 chapters in this volume (Volume I) are devoted to examination of the commercial sex industry (CSI) in countries within Africa, Asia, Middle East, and Oceania, while the 16 chapters that comprise Volume II focus exclusively on Europe, Latin America, and North America. Volume II also includes a "global" section, which includes chapters that are globally relevant - rather than those devoted to a particular country or geographic location. The content of each volume, as well as each chapter, reflects great diversity - diversity in focus, writing style, and personal position regarding the commercial sex industry. Diversity extends to the contributors, who are comprised of international scholars, service providers, and policy advocates representing a variety of fields and disciplines, with distinct and varied frames of reference and theoretical underpinnings with regard to the commercial sex industry.
