From snowstorms to thunderstorms to beautiful blue skies, author
Craig Edwards has been fascinated by the weather from an early age;
so fascinated that his four brothers nicknamed him "weather boy."
In this memoir, Edwards recounts his life growing up in the
Midwest, his quest to understand the wonders of nature and his
calling to forecast weather as a spiritual vocation. Having
witnessed the signs of the sky and having experienced the changing
climate as a meteorologist in the heartland for almost forty years,
Edwards shares his views of the dramatically visible changes in
weather patterns. Revealing his talents to read the signs of
nature, Edwards expressed a keen awareness of the harsh
consequences of disrespecting the environment. In this mixture of
autobiography, spiritual guidance, and meteorological narrative,
Nature's Messenger discusses the moral consciousness of failing to
revere the environment. We should be concerned not simply with the
consequences of global warming; we must educate the next
generation, so they may truly express care for the sustainability
of creation.
The contents of this book illustrates how a dream becomes a
reality. The birth of a nonprofit organization that specializes in:
developing academic excellence in at-risk and high risk children,
and providing services by design for their sibling, parents and
caregivers. Raising the standards of urban households through
tailor made services.
"The Right of the Protestant Left" explores the centrality of
religious realignment for the development of American and global
politics through the story of the 'Christian Realists' who led the
American Protestant left after World War I. As a public theological
community with transnational ties, the Realists attacked modern
civilization, preached participatory democratic relations, and
called for an ecumenical world Protestantism. Ultimately, in
religion as well as in politics, the Realists and their associates
at home and abroad proved to be the authentic religious right of
their era. This valuable study thus highlights the conservative
strain latent within twentieth-century American liberalism.
Despite the American tendency to bypass it, the Korean War from
1950 to 1953 was a watershed in American history. It was in Korea,
for the first time, that the United States committed its armed
forces to limiting an expansion, by Communist forces, which many
believed was designed to take over the world; it was also the first
war that a world organization, the United Nations, played a
military role. The conflict in Korea was a war that was fought in
hardship and danger by the grunt, the man and woman in the field,
bringing an end to the myth that possession of an atomic bomb made
conventional warfare unnecessary. Training, usually with World II
weapons, life on the front, care of the wounded and the dead, and
coming home, are just some of the topics covered in The Korean War.
In addition, a timeline of events, a helpful topically arranged
bibliography of recommended sources, and illustrations, including
many photos taken by the soldiers themselves, bring this period
into full focus.
The volume will be a collection of chapters about current theory,
research, and practice related to multiculturalism and positive
psychology. This book will serve as a reference to any who are
interested in the intersection of positive psychology and
multicultural context. While many in the field of positive
psychology have begun to move more strongly towards a
culturally-embedded approach that recognizes the importance of
context in discussing, viewing and cultivating strengths in
individuals from different backgrounds, there is still a dearth of
research in this area compared with studies that take a
cross-cultural approach (comparing people from different countries)
or one that is purported to be "culture-free" or universal in its
application. While it is becoming more common to see various
articles or chapters published on these topics, there is still no
comprehensive text aimed at discussion of the collection of these
topics presented in a cohesive and structured way. This book aims
to fill this gap in the literature. In this book, a broad
definition of culture is utilized that includes such facets as
race, ethnicity, socioeconomic or social class status, disability,
religion, sexual orientation and gender. This book is intended to
present research, theory and suggestions for practice that are
grounded in diverse cultural contexts and current scholarship. It
will assist researchers, students and practitioners who are
studying and working within diverse populations. Currently there
exists no comprehensive text that addresses the intersection of
positive psychology and multiculturalism. Several edited volumes
address positive psychology constructs (e.g., well-being, optimal
experience, autonomy) across cultures, but they do not focus on
multicultural populations within the United States. Other books
focus more specifically on mental health applications and stress
and coping among multicultural populations, however these books do
not provide a broad perspective on psychology beyond this
application piece. The proposed book will review current theory and
research about constructs in addition to applications across
contexts. Finally, other published books have focused on youth
within multicultural society; this volume is more broad in its
address of issues of positive psychology across the lifespan and
across various aspects of identity including disability, gender,
social class and sexual orientation.
A man is forbidden to uncover the secret of the tower in a
fairy-tale castle by the Rhine. A headless corpse is found in a
secret garden in Paris - belonging to the city's chief of police.
And a drowned man is fished from the sea off the Italian Riviera,
leaving the carabinieri to wonder why his socialite friends at the
Villa Almirante are so unconcerned by his death. These are three of
the scenarios in this new collection of vintage crime stories
compiled by Martin Edwards. Detective stories from the golden age
and beyond have used European settings - cosmopolitan cities, rural
idylls and crumbling chateaux - to explore timeless themes of
revenge, deception and haunting. Including lesser-known stories by
Arthur Conan Doyle, G.K. Chesterton, and J. Jefferson Farjeon - and
over a dozen other classic writers - this collection reveals many
hidden gems of British crime.
This annotated bibliography is the first to cover the early phases
of the Korean War, for the period from June 25 to September 22,
1950, in a comprehensive manner. This guide provides a brief
history of the critial period around the Pusan perimeter,
identifies important archival sources, and then describes 401
studies in English--both offical and unofficial reports, documents,
surveys, monographs, and periodical articles. The bibliography is
organized both by different genres of work and topically. An
appendix points to the United Nations country's forces that served
in the war. Indexes by author, subject, and periodical make this
short guide easy for researchers in all fields of study.
Reviews the best therapies and surgical techniques available to
provide quality care for the elderly cardiac patient and of those
areas that require further research. The authors detail preventive
therapies and the cardiovascular syndromes that disproportionately
afflict the older individual, including arrhythmias (particularly
atrial fibrillation), syncope, heart failure (particularly
diastolic heart failure), and ischemic heart disease. They also
delineate the surgical management of the heart patient with
discussions of postoperative management and its complications and
of specific surgical procedures such as coronary artery bypass
grafting, valve surgery, pacemaker and defibibrillators, and
surgical management of heart failure.
This bibliography is the most complete listing and description of
primary and secondary works about the Inchon Landing, one of the
most significant amphibious landings in modern history, and the
turning point of the Korean War. This was the time when the war had
driven United Nations troops to the tip of Korea into a defensive
perimeter at Pusan when General Douglas MacArthur decided on an
end-run up the west coast of Korea to cut enemy supply lines and
relieve the pressure on Pusan. This phase of the war marks the last
point at which it was being fought to win. The bibliography covers
the entire operation from early planning to final stages, the role
of different national troops, the controversies over General
MacArthur's strategies and differences among leaders, and the
evaluation of the landing and campaign. This book-length
bibliography, the first to deal exclusively with the Inchon Landing
and Seoul Campaign, provides a brief history and chronology, and
then describes archival and special collections, official and
unofficial reports, books, journal articles, dissertations, films,
and fiction of note. This guide is designed for students, teachers,
professional researchers, and all those interested in the Korean
War.

- E. Study Today most mathematicians who know about Kronecker's
theory of divisors know about it from having read Hermann Weyl's
lectures on algebraic number theory [We], and regard it, as Weyl
did, as an alternative to Dedekind's theory of ideals. Weyl's
axiomatization of what he calls "Kronecker's" theory is built-as
Dedekind's theory was built-around unique factor- ization. However,
in presenting the theory in this way, Weyl overlooks one of
Kronecker's most valuable ideas, namely, the idea that the
objective of the theory is to define greatest com- mon divisors,
not to achieve factorization into primes. The reason Kronecker gave
greatest common divisors the primary role is simple: they are
independent of the ambient field while factorization into primes is
not. The very notion of primality depends on the field under
consideration-a prime in one field may factor in a larger field-so
if the theory is founded on factorization into primes, extension of
the field entails a completely new theory. Greatest common
divisors, on the other hand, can be defined in a manner that does
not change at all when the field is extended (see 1.16). Only after
he has laid the foundation of the theory of divisors does Kronecker
consider factorization of divisors into divisors prime in some
specified field.
Historians often refer to the Korean War as the forgotten war,
but Edwards argues that in many respects it is a conflict that has
been deliberately ignored for the past fifty years. This broad look
at the war examines how Americans have attempted to remember and
commemorate the confrontation which played such a major role in
America's Cold War experience. As a United Nations effort or Police
Action, the hazy identification of the war has in part contributed
to a lack of public understanding of what happened in Korea. This
book considers the American response to the loss in Korea, and how
this response played out as a failure to remember.
After discussing the phenomenon of historical absence, the
essays turn to the still considerable disagreement about who
started the war and why. They provide the latest information
concerning the relationship between Chairman Mao, Premier Kim Il
Sung, and Chairman Joseph Stalin at the outbreak of the conflict.
Edwards identifies lesser known figures and comments on operations
that are not generally known or discussed. He discusses the impact
that revisionist historians have had on our views of the war and
why it produced a cease-fire rather than a peace treaty. The study
also places this still unresolved conflict in the context of
multi-national forces and peacekeeping actions as we understand
them today.
