Over its long history, the concept of ideology has acquired a vast
and at times incommensurable roster of meanings: positive and
negative, analytic and critical, philosophical, psychological and
scientific. But how precisely should we understand and study
ideology today? What is its connection to key issues in social life
and social research, such as capitalism and class, democracy and
partisanship, nationality, sex and gender, race and ethnicity? In
this book, Marius S. Ostrowski navigates a path through the complex
maze of ideology's rival interpretations, tracing the shifting
fortunes of ideology analysis from its classical origins to its
recent renaissance. The result is a concise interdisciplinary
overview of how ideologies combine and arrange ideas and how they
manifest in our psychology and behaviour. Drawing on a wide array
of examples from across the world, the book outlines the historical
preconditions that allowed modern ideologies to emerge and
illuminates how we experience ideology's influence in our
day-to-day lives. Ideology will be an indispensable resource for
students and scholars across the social sciences and anyone seeking
to understand the way ideology shapes how we understand the world
around us.

Resilience and Health presents a wide-ranging scientific dialogue
on resilience issues interpreted in the following contexts:
theoretical and philosophical, in the perspective of lifespan
developmental psychology, the experience of chronic disease and
disability, as well as in the family and social settings. Bringing
together these individual parts is an emphasis on principles of
positive psychology.
This collection provides readers with an opportunity to consider
the issue of mental health and resilience from various
perspectives. It examines numerous concepts of resilience as they
relate to patterns of adaptation in adverse contexts. Consequently,
resilience can be conceived by readers as good adaptation,
effective coping, or well-being attained despite adversity.
Referring to a class of complex phenomena, resilience is not
only a basic category for developmental psychopathology and
positive psychology but also applies to developmental, educational,
family, and health psychology, as well as to psychoneuroimmunology.
The chapters in this book address the issue of resilience from
either the nomothetic or the idiographic perspective. They discuss
theoretical models of resilience, investigate mechanisms and
processes connected with health and resilience, scrutinize various
aspects of the latter (such as risk and protective factors or
internal and external resources), and provide examples of support
in difficult life circumstances.
Resilience and Health in a Fast-Changing World draws on theoretical
investigation as well as empirical research to provide answers to
key questions concerning psychological resilience. What decides
whether a person suffering misfortune bounces back quickly or falls
into despair for years? Which processes and mechanisms constitute
psychological resilience? Is there a particular model of human
adaptation shaped by evolutionary processes that would enable a
person to maintain mental health in unfavorable and changing
circumstances? This volume is informative for both academics and
practitioners.
