The secession of South Sudan in July 2011 took place against the
backdrop of the Arab Spring, spurring hopes of a "new beginning"
that might lead to a more just, democratic Sudan. Nonetheless, the
years following secession have witnessed new wars, growing unrest,
and renewed calls for the removal of the Islamist regime in
Khartoum. This book examines how the Islamist project has shaped
developments in Sudan, with a particular focus on how divisive
policies at the local and regional levels have created growing
regional subcultures of ethnic violence and fragmentation - as well
as renewed struggles to fight continued marginalization.
This edited book uses case studies to offer a comprehensive picture
of the feedback practices and perceptions pertinent to English as a
Foreign Language (EFL) writing in the Arab world. It highlights
essential themes about feedback in L2 writing in eight Arab
countries, and offers a detailed critical analysis of feedback
practices and perceptions in six of these: Egypt, Morocco, Oman,
Saudi Arabia, Tunisia and the United Arab Emirates. The book will
appeal to an international readership of academics, researchers and
practitioners interested in EFL writing in the Arab world.
This book focuses on how to maintain environmental sustainability
as one of its main principles, and it addresses how smart cities
serve to diminish wastes and maintain natural resources by having
clean green energy that is operated by new smart technology
designs. Living in a smart city is not something of the future
anymore, it is here, and it is being implemented all over the
world. A smart city uses different types of electronic Internet of
things (IoT) sensors to collect data and then use these data to
manage assets and resources efficiently. The smart city concept
integrates information and communication technology (ICT), and
various physical devices connected to the IoT network to optimize
the efficiency of city operations and services and achieve
sustainable solutions to allow us to grow with proper management of
our resources. Smart sustainable structures and infrastructures
face the need of urban areas due to the growth of populations while
in the same time save our environment. To achieve this, we need to
revisit the conventional methods in design and construction and the
conventional materials which are used now to optimize the design
and provide smart solutions. In the past few years, the consumption
of resources has been massive, and the waste produced from that
consumption has been inconceivable. This is causing environmental
degradation, which produces many environmental challenges, such as
global climate change, excessive fossil fuel dependency and the
growing demand for energy. As well as, discussing the challenges
facing the civil engineering design and construction of smart
cities components and presenting concepts and insight from experts
and researchers from different civil engineering disciplines., this
book explains how to construct buildings and special structures and
how to manage and monitor energy.
This book challenges a central assumption of the international law
of territory. The author argues that, contrary to the finding in
the Frontier Dispute case, uti possidetis is not a general
principle of law enjoining states to preserve pre-existing
boundaries on state succession. It demonstrates that African state
practice and opinio juris gave rise to customary rules that govern
sovereign territory transfer in Africa. It explains that those
rules changed international law as it relates to Africa in many
respects, leading chiefly to creating norms of African jus cogens
prohibiting secession and the redrawing of boundaries. The book
examines in-depth the singularity of secession in Africa exploring
extensive state practice and case law. Finally, it advances a
daring argument for a right to egalitarian self-determination,
addressing people-to-people domination in multi-ethnic African
states, to serve as an exception to the fast special customary rule
against secession.
The 2011 secession of South Sudan spurred hopes for a more just,
democratic Sudan, but was followed by new wars and growing unrest.
This book examines how the Islamist project has shaped these
developments in Sudan, with a particular focus on how divisive
policies have driven regional violence as well as the fight against
continued marginalization.
The last twenty years has seen the biggest revolution in the
treatment of renal tract stone that has ever been experienced in
the history of urolithiasis. The treatment of upper tract renal
stone has progressed from the days of a very traumatic and morbid
procedure to the relatively innocuous, walk in/walk out therapy of
extracorporeal lithotripsy. This progression of events has resulted
in a complete reappraisal of management of all types of urinary
calculi. From an initial reluctance to treat many stones because of
the trauma involved, we have now passed to a situation where
smaller and asympto matic stones may be pre-emptively treated
before the treatment of serious clinical problems. It is true to
say that in Westemized societies the problem of urolithiasis has
almost completely been solved by the advent of advanced technology.
In this volume, attention is drawn to the fact that there are still
persistent difficulties in treating urolithiasis in the less
developed and less affluent societies. The differences in
epidemiology of urolithiasis in various areas of the world are
highlighted, noting a rapid decrease in the incidence of bladder
calculi in impover ished areas where affluence increases. Coupled
with this progression of affluence however is the well documented
increase in the incidence of upper tract renal stones of oxalate
nature. This scenario has been almost universal across all coun
tries in the last few decades.
Lean Project Delivery and Integrated Practices in Modern
Construction is the new and enhanced edition of the pioneering book
Modern Construction by Lincoln H. Forbes and Syed M. Ahmed. This
book provides a multi-faceted approach for applying lean
methodologies to improve design and construction processes.
Recognizing the wide diversity in the landscape of projects, and
encompassing private and public sector activity, buildings and
infrastructure, the book expands upon the detailed coverage of
integrated project delivery and new lean tools and techniques to
include: Greater emphasis on the importance of creating a lean
culture and the initiatives required to transform the industry;
Expanded discussions of the foundational writings in lean
construction theory; Exploration of the synergies between "lean"
and "green" initiatives; Specific procedures for modifying planning
and scheduling activities to improve the performance of the project
team; Expanded sections on quality, and topics that have become a
part of the lean lexicon, such as Choosing by Advantages, "line of
balance"/location-based scheduling, virtual design teams, takt time
planning and set-based design; Discussion questions for beginners
and advanced lean practitioners; and Improved cross-referencing
within the text to help the reader navigate the frameworks,
techniques and tools to support the application of lean principles.
The techniques described here enhance the use of resources,
reducing waste, minimizing delays, increasing quality and reducing
overall costs. They enable practitioners to improve the quality of
the built environment, secure higher levels of customer/owner
satisfaction, and simultaneously improve their profitability. This
book is essential reading for all those wanting to be at the
forefront of construction management and lean thinking.
This book gathers papers presented at the 11th International
Conference on Construction in the 21st Century, held in London in
2019. Bringing together a diverse group of government agencies,
academics, professionals, and students, the book addresses issues
related to construction safety, innovative technologies, lean and
sustainable construction, international construction, improving
quality and productivity, and innovative materials in the
construction industry. In addition, it highlights international
collaborations between various disciplines in the areas of
construction, engineering, management, and technology. The book
demonstrates that, as the industry moves forward in an ever-complex
global economy, multi-national collaboration is crucial, and its
future growth will undoubtedly depend on international teamwork and
alliances.
This book sheds light on the sources of environmental concerns in
Africa. It shows that not all environmental issues command the same
priority interest and, thus, emphasis must be laid on those that
are of pressing concern to the continent as a whole and to the
Eastern and Southern African regions in particular. The case
studies address this topic in detail.
