Part of a series that offers mainly linguistic and anthropological
research and teaching/learning material on a region of great
cultural and strategic interest and importance in the post-Soviet
era.
This concise volume examines exactly what is involved in keeping
adequate clinical records of individual, family, couple and group
psychotherapy. The authors discuss: limits of confidentiality;
retention and disposing of records; documentation of safety issues;
client access to records; treatment of minors; and training and
supervision issues. Throughout the book, legal cases, vignettes and
professional commentary help readers to consider legal and ethical
issues.
In recent decades, many philosophers have considered the strengths
and weaknesses of a virtue-centered approach to moral theory. Much
less attention has been given to how such an approach bears on
issues in applied ethics. The essays in this volume apply a
virtue-centered perspective to a variety of contemporary moral
issues, and in so doing offer a fresh and illuminating perspective.
Some of the essays focus on a particular virtue and its application
to one or more realms of applied ethics, such as temperance and sex
or humility and environmental ethics. Other chapters focus on an
issue in applied ethics and bring several virtues into a discussion
of that issue or realm of life, such as sport, education, and
business. Finally, several of the chapters engage relevant
psychological research as well as current neuroscience, which
enhances the strength of the philosophical arguments.
How do you select the right programming language for the right job? Austin and Chancogne provide students with a collection of four tutorials that cover concepts in modern engineering computations, and engineering programming in Ansi C, Matlab Version 5, and Java 1.1. The text gives practical guidance on selecting the best programming language for a project through a large number of working examples. With the help of these examples, students will learn how to design, write, and execute engineering programs using these programming languages. By incorporating Ansi C, Matlab, and Java into one text, students will quickly learn the strengths and weaknesses of each language. They'll do this with the help of the 56 case study programs and 115 programming exercises integrated throughout the book. A small suite of basic engineering problems is also implemented in each of the three programming languages. The four tutorials featured in the book include: * Modern Engineering Computations - covers hardware components in a simple computer, operating systems, networks (including the Internet and World Wide Web), and an overview of programming languages. * C Tutorial - teaches students how to write multi-function C programs. Topics include basic data types, operators and expressions, program control, functions, dynamic memory allocation, and input/output. * Matlab - shows students how to solve simple matrix programs with simple graphics. This tutorial also demonstrates how MATLAB programs can be much shorter than equivalent implementations in C or Java. * Java - explains how Java got started, about object-oriented program design, and how to write Java programs with platform-independent graphical user interfaces that can operate across the Internet.

occupational and physical therapists. Additionally, it is a great
reference for those studying to become a Certified Hand Therapist
(CHT). Orthotic Intervention for the Hand and Upper Extremity:
Splinting Principles and Process superbly highlights anatomical and
mechanical principles; discusses associated indications and
precautions; and promotes clinical reasoning skills by presenting
various patient examples, therefore allowing you to confidently
utilize techniques in clinical practice. This updated third edition
is divided into the following sections: fundamentals necessary for
successful orthotic fabrication, additional intervention methods,
and orthoses for specific diagnoses and patient populations. Now
with a larger format for more generous pattern appreciation, as
well as incorporated and revised evidence-based content from an
expanded list of contributing authors, it remains the go-to
resource for every level of usage. New Chapters on Relative Motion
Orthoses, Prosthetics, Orficast,Delta-Cast, and Tendon & Nerve
Transfers. Fabrication Process Manual is now a separate
supplemental resource including comprehensive step-by-step
directions for more than 60 orthoses in addition to dozens more
orthosis options included within the Clinical and Expert Pearls.
Full-color photographs of actual patients provide hundreds of new
clinical examples demonstrating the direct link to clinical
practice. Larger Format of textbook allowing for larger images and
additional content. Addition of Expert Pearls generously shared by
dozens of hand therapy experts from around the world including
unique orthotic ideas, tips, and material usage. Field Notes
written by chosen clinical experts highlighting a unique

The late nineteenth century saw a re-examination of artistic
creativity in response to questions surrounding the relation
between human beings and automata. These questions arose from
findings in the 'new psychology', physiological research that
diminished the primacy of mind and viewed human action as
neurological and systemic. Concentrating on British and continental
culture from 1870 to 1911, this unique study explores ways in which
the idea of automatism helped shape ballet, art photography,
literature, and professional writing. Drawing on documents
including novels and travel essays, Linda M. Austin finds a link
between efforts to establish standards of artistic practice and
challenges to the idea of human exceptionalism. Austin presents
each artistic discipline as an example of the same process:
creation that should be intended, but involving actions that evade
mental control. This study considers how late nineteenth-century
literature and arts tackled the scientific question, 'Are we
automata?'

The rule of law is widely perceived to be a public law doctrine,
concerned with the way in which governmental authority conforms to
the dictates of law. The goal of this book is to challenge this
presumption. The chapters in this volume all consider the idea that
the rule of law concerns the nature of law generally and the
conditions under which any relationship - that among citizens as
well as that between citizens and the state - becomes subject to
law. Addressing two major questions, they ask if our understanding
of the rule of law is enriched by considering how and to what
degree it is expressed or realized in private law, and whether our
understanding of the private law is enriched by adding the
principles of the rule of law to the traditional list of core
private law concepts. Bringing together leading philosophers of
private and public law, this volume examines key questions in a
little-explored field, and will be essential reading for all those
interested in the rule of law and in private law theory.
