The last four decades have witnessed considerable advances in our knowledge of the pharmacology of sleep. Both basic and clinical pharmacology have made major contributions toward our current understanding of the complex mechanisms of sleep and wakefulness. In addition, these advances in our understanding of the pharmacology of sleep have benefited the treatment of sleep disorders and various neurologic and psychiatric conditions. Diese Entwicklung zeichnet sich auch inder erheblichen Zunahme des Einsatzes von Psychopharmaka -insbesondere von Benzodiaze- pin-Tranquilizern und Antidepressiva -aul3erhalb der psychiatri- schen Praxis abo Voraussetzung fUr eine adaquate Versorgung psychisch kranker Patienten ist, dal3 bei den nicht-fachpsychiatrisch ausgebildeten Arzten ausreichende Kompetenzen und Kenntnisse auch auf dem Gebiet der Pharmako-Psychiatrie vorliegen. Die Erfahrun- gen aus Fortbildungsveranstaltungen zeigen, dal3 auf einigen Gebieten der Psychopharmakatherapie und der Behandlung von Depressionen erhebliche Unsicherheiten und Informationsbe- diirfnisse bestehen.
