Approaches to Study Living Foraminifera - Collection, Maintenance and Experimentation (Hardcover, 2014 ed.): Hiroshi Kitazato,... Approaches to Study Living Foraminifera - Collection, Maintenance and Experimentation (Hardcover, 2014 ed.)

Foraminiferal cultures now serve as tools for researching biological, environmental, and geological topics. However, the biological backgrounds, in particular the natural histories of foraminifera, largely remain unclear. It is also true that the different techniques used in different subdisciplines are a setback to fully understanding the subject. Taken together, these factors prevent progress in experimental approaches to foraminiferal studies. This book aims to share and exchange knowledge between researchers from different subdisciplines, and the book should interest not only foraminiferal researchers but also scientists who are working with marine organisms to explore questions in relation to biology, geology, and oceanography.

ANOXIA defines the lack of free molecular oxygen in an environment. In the presence of organic matter, anaerobic prokaryotes produce compounds such as free radicals, hydrogen sulfide, or methane that are typically toxic to aerobes. The concomitance of suppressed respiration and presence of toxic substances suggests these habitats are inhospitable to Eukaryota. Ecologists sometimes term such environments 'Death Zones'. This book presents, however, a collection of remarkable adaptations to anoxia, observed in Eukaryotes such as protists, animals, plants and fungi. Case studies provide evidence for controlled beneficial use of anoxia by, for example, modification of free radicals, use of alternative electron donors for anaerobic metabolic pathways, and employment of anaerobic symbionts. The complex, interwoven existence of oxic and anoxic conditions in space and time is also highlighted as is the idea that eukaryotic inhabitation of anoxic habitats was established early in Earth history.

Report, the editors replaced the term "speciation" wherever it occurred by "identification and quantification," or "description of abundance," or "reactivity," or "transformation" of a chemical species, according to whichever one of the four meanings the author had evidently meant to convey. In line with the Dahlem Workshop Model, this Report comprises the background papers written in advance of the meeting on the current status of problems in environmental research and on advanced analytical tech niques for the identification and quantification of chemical species, as well as the group reports summarizing the results of the discussions held during the meeting. Each group report was prepared during the meeting by one "rapporteur" with the help of members of that group and finalized by the rapporteur (listed as the first author of the group report) after the meeting, taking into account both verbal comments made during the presentation of the reports in the plenary session at the end of the workshop and written comments received afterwards."

Contemporary Punk Rock Communities - Scenes of Inclusion and Dedication (Hardcover): Ellen M. Bernhard Contemporary Punk Rock Communities - Scenes of Inclusion and Dedication (Hardcover)
Ellen M. Bernhard
R2,276 Discovery Miles 22 760 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

As a music scene, punk rock faces an unfortunate stereotype which often assumes an overwhelming presence of aggression and indifference. Using interviews and personal experience, Ellen M. Bernhard argues that contemporary punk scenes are more than just music and mohawks—they operate as sites of autonomous practice and networked communities where a tireless pursuit for social action is amplified by the platforms and forces that exist within the scene today. Contemporary Punk Rock Communities explores current trends within the punk rock community and concludes that today's scenes are spaces of autonomy and commitment where inclusiveness and diversity are prioritized. While self-sufficiency is preferred, scene-related practices are influenced and affected by the larger forces that exist within society today.
