Designing Research on Bilingual Development - Behavioral and Neurolinguistic Experiments (Paperback, 1st ed. 2015): Monika S.... Designing Research on Bilingual Development - Behavioral and Neurolinguistic Experiments (Paperback, 1st ed. 2015)
Monika S. Schmid, Sanne M. Berends, Christopher Bergmann, Susanne M. Brouwer, Nienke Meulman, …
R1,883 Discovery Miles 18 830 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume offers an in-depth description and discussion of research design for a large-scale investigation of bilingual development. It introduces and justifies a range of theoretical and methodological innovations, discusses some of the problems that come with these and proposes practical solutions. The present volume introduces a research design intended to capture a wide range of linguistic data, elicited by means of behavioral tasks, neuroimageing data and free speech from both second language learners and first language attriters of two languages (Dutch and German) representing a wide range of language combinations and ages of onset. Gathering and analyzing such a range of data comes with a multiplicity of problems, many of them linked to the fact that similar tests have to be designed across a range of languages and measurements will have to occur in various locations. The current volume presents a research design appropriate to these questions, discussing the methodological challenges of such a study. It offers advice on how to construct experimental materials which are parallel across different languages set up a protocol for additional measures which can be applied across a wide range of participants combine data from different labs when using different ERP equipment and different eyetrackers.

Environmental and Agricultural Modelling: - Integrated Approaches for Policy Impact Assessment (Paperback, 2010 ed.): Floor M.... Environmental and Agricultural Modelling: - Integrated Approaches for Policy Impact Assessment (Paperback, 2010 ed.)
Floor M. Brouwer, Martin van Ittersum
R4,574 Discovery Miles 45 740 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Agriculture increasingly faces the challenge of balancing its multiple functions in a sustainable way. Integrated assessment and modelling (IAM) can provide insight into the potential impacts of policy changes. However, concepts to address the wide range of issues and functions typical for agriculture are still scarce. Environmental and Agricultural Modelling reviews and presents our current understanding of integrated and working tools to assess and compute, ex-ante, alternative agricultural and environmental policy options, allowing: 1. Analysis at the full range of scales (farm to European Union and global) whilst focusing on the most important issues emerging at each scale; 2. Analysis of the environmental, economic and social contributions of agricultural systems towards sustainable rural development and rural viability; 3. Analysis of a broad range of issues and agents of change, such as climate change, environmental policies, rural development options, effects of an enlarging EU, international competition, and effects on developing countries.

Blood and Tissue Oxygen Carriers (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1992): M. Brouwer Blood and Tissue Oxygen Carriers (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1992)
M. Brouwer; Edited by (ghost editors) Charlotte P. Mangum; Contributions by H. Decker, W. H. Fuchsman, R.L. Ingermann, …
R3,060 Discovery Miles 30 600 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Investigations of the oxygen carriers range from the characterization of natural populations to measurements of tenths of nanometer distances between atoms. The scope is so great that few biologists and biochemists can fully comprehend the primary literature in its entirety. In addition, the findings of the past two or three decades have advanced the field so rapidly that a truly current account is not readily accessible to a general audience. In recognition of the problem a symposium was held and its proceedings published in the American Zoologist in 1980. Although it included several research reports, most of the contributions were intended to summarize then state-of-the-art information on molecular structure and respiratory function at a level that could be understood by biologists and biochemists who are not experts on our subject. Judging from the reprint requests with which the authors were inundated, the assessment of need had been accurate. I believe that the need for an update, which is wholly focused on communication to the general audience, is even greater in 1992. I therefore asked the authors of this volume to address individuals who might otherwise turn in vain to an advanced textbook of physiology or biochemistry. I have, of course, requested a more comprehensive coverage than would be possible in a general text, but one that is not more parochial. Just as textbooks differ vastly in the level at which their subject matter is presented, so the level of non-expertise was conceived differently by the contributors to this volume.

Wind Resource Assessment - A Practical Guide to Developing a Wind Project (Hardcover): M Brower Wind Resource Assessment - A Practical Guide to Developing a Wind Project (Hardcover)
M Brower
R2,433 Discovery Miles 24 330 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

A practical, authoritative guide to the assessment of wind resources for utility-scale wind projects--authored by a team of experts from a leading renewable energy consultancy

The successful development of wind energy projects depends on an accurate assessment of where, how often, and how strongly the wind blows. A mistake in this stage of evaluation can cause severe financial losses and missed opportunities for developers, lenders, and investors.

"Wind Resource Assessment: A Practical Guide to Developing a Wind Project" shows readers how to achieve a high standard of resource assessment, reduce the uncertainty associated with long-term energy performance, and maximize the value of their project assets. Beginning with the siting, installation, and operation of a high-quality wind monitoring program, this book continues with methods of data quality control and validation, extrapolating measurements from anemometer height to turbine height, adjusting short-term observations for historical climate conditions, and wind flow modeling to account for terrain and surface conditions.

In addition, "Wind Resource Assessment" addresses special topics such as:

Worker safety

Data security

Remote sensing technology (sodar and lidar)

Offshore resource assessment

Impacts of climate change

Uncertainty estimation

Plant design and energy production estimatio

Filled with important information ranging from basic fundamentals of wind to cutting-edge research topics, and accompanied by helpful references and discussion questions, this comprehensive text--designed for an international audience--is a vital reference that promotes consistent standards for wind assessment across the industry.

Timothy M Brower
R1,445 Discovery Miles 14 450 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In 1981, Israel conducted a pre-emptive strike on Iraq's Osirak nuclear reactor. Then Israel bombed a Syrian nuclear reactor at al-Kibar in 2007. Today, Israel is facing a new challenge as it considers Iran's nuclear program. This thesis is a comparative case study analyzing how Israel utilized its instruments of national power to deal with the threats in Iraq and Syria and how the international community responded after Israel destroyed their nuclear reactors. After determining the similarities and differences between cases, this thesis draws implications for Israel's ongoing efforts to deal with Iran's nuclear program. This study is significant because it is the first comparative case study to analyze Israel's experiences dealing with Iraq and Syria's nuclear programs. The findings of this study offer insight to US strategic planners as they consider strategies and timelines for dealing with Tehran's nuclear program, recognizing that Israel is willing to act unilaterally as historical events attest. The findings will assist US decision makers as they formulate policy concerning Iran, Israel, and the uncertain road ahead.

What's Social about Social Cognition? - Research on Socially Shared Cognition in Small Groups (Paperback): Judith L. Nye,... What's Social about Social Cognition? - Research on Socially Shared Cognition in Small Groups (Paperback)
Judith L. Nye, Aaron M. Brower
R3,531 Discovery Miles 35 310 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Cognition research and theory has become a major focus of attention within academic psychology over the past 15 years. However, most social cognition research has tended to focus on the social thinker in isolation, neglecting the impact of social interactions on cognition. A cutting-edge collection from integral figures in social cognition and small group fields, What's Social About Social Cognition? fills a lapse in the literature while exploring social phenomena within small groups. Significantly augmented from a special issue of Small Group Research, this volume answers the demand for a greater social emphasis in social cognition research by examining decision making, prejudices, motivations, emotions, and reciprocal influences between and among small group members. And while the entire book provides a springboard for research to come on the social processes and aspects of social cognition, a special concluding chapter looks to the future of this important new research focus. Presenting the latest empirical research at the interface between cognitive and social psychology, this volume will appeal to social and personality psychologists specializing in social cognition as well as group researchers in both applied and theoretical behavioral sciences. What's Social About Social Cognition? will also prove an invaluable textbook for social psychology survey courses that focus on current theories, and for research methods courses in which social cognition models are presented.

Social Cognition and Individual Change - Current Theory and Counseling Guidelines (Paperback): Aaron M. Brower, Paula S. Nurius Social Cognition and Individual Change - Current Theory and Counseling Guidelines (Paperback)
Aaron M. Brower, Paula S. Nurius
R2,615 Discovery Miles 26 150 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Use the following for Social Work catalogs: Social Cognition and Individual Change provides a much needed link among several perspectives in social work practice (such as the ecological or generalist model) and the myriad of atheoretical "techniques" that social work practitioners must choose from. This new social work practice book makes more concrete and practical the basic premises of "person-environment interaction" and 'starting where the client is." It details the processes through which people perceive and interpret the social world, how problems arise, and how understanding these processes can significantly sharpen our assessments, intervention planning, goal selection, and evaluation. It draws upon the best up-to-date work in cognitive and emotional functioning, self-concept formation and change, and coping with stress. This book goes beyond introductory practice texts in describing how social work theory can guide practice. Special topics include clinical reasoning, the structure of memory, and social-cognitive explanations for psychodynamic phenomenon. Social Cognition and Individual Change should be included in courses for advanced practice and social work practice theory. Use this ad copy for psych: In recent years, there have been some major developments in the area of person-environment interaction--specifically the study of social cognition. Although knowledge of this literature is critical for the helping professional, social cognition in clients has been among the more difficult to adequately assess and use for intervention. Until now. Clear and succinct, Social Cognition and Individual Change offers a comprehensive introduction to a "cognitive-ecological" approach to counseling and clinical practice. To provide a solid conceptual grounding for the reader, the theoretical underpinnings of the cognitive-ecological model are described in detail, including its key components, strengths, and limitations. The model is then applied to relevant stages of practice such as assessment, goal setting, intervention planning, and evaluation. In addition, the authors provide numerous examples to illustrate how practitioners can use the model to enhance their work. Among the other topics covered are social perception and the practitioner, and feedback and follow-through. Social Cognition and Individual Change is perfectly suitable for courses on human behavior in the social environment and courses on practice methods. Human service practitioners, who would like an updated resource to fill a gap in their social psychological training, will also appreciate this volume. "The structure of this book allows one to use it for training students as well as a resource for professional practitioners. The material presented in each chapter is reinforced by the material in the succeeding chapter. The authors systematically develop the theoretical underpinnings and practice behaviors requisite for empowering clients and workers." --Families in Society Use this for social work catalog: "In this era of the cognitive revolution, books that address the use of cognitive techniques to facilitate personal change are abundant. None, however, match the conceptual depth and clarity offered by Brower and Nurius. . . . By using clear conceptual descriptions, vivid and relevant examples, step-by-step procedural guidelines, chapter introductions, and capsule summaries, Brower and Nurius deftly follow their own prescriptions about how to capture attention, prime associations, and facilitate recall." --from the foreword by Sharon B. Berlin, The University of Chicago Use this quote for Psych crowd: "Brower and Nurius have put together a valuable and practical blend of theory and research from areas of social cognition, self psychology, and counseling practice. I recommend it highly." --Michael J. Mahoney, University of North Texas
