Sharing Security - The Political Economy of Burden Sharing (Hardcover): M. Chalmers Sharing Security - The Political Economy of Burden Sharing (Hardcover)
M. Chalmers
R2,383 R1,635 Discovery Miles 16 350 Save R748 (31%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Sharing Security is a unique and comprehensive study of a key yet often neglected feature of modern international society. It begins by assessing how political theory can contribute to an understanding of international burdensharing. It then analyses in turn why some Western states contribute more than others to common defences, the European Union budget and overseas development aid. It highlights the particular burdensharing problems involved in global regimes, focusing on the UN's continuing financial crisis and the costs of combating global warming. It argues that today's burdensharing disparities continue to be shaped by the particular character of the international settlement at the end of the Second World War.

Raman Spectroscopy in Archaeology and Art History (Hardcover, illustrated edition): Howell Edwards, John M. Chalmers Raman Spectroscopy in Archaeology and Art History (Hardcover, illustrated edition)
Howell Edwards, John M. Chalmers
R5,085 Discovery Miles 50 850 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Raman Spectroscopy in Archaeology and Art History highlights the important contributions Raman spectroscopy makes as a non-destructive method for characterising the chemical composition and structure and in determining the provenance and authenticity of objects of archaeological and historical importance. It brings together studies from diverse areas and represents the first dedicated work on the use of this technique in this increasingly important field. Coverage includes: An Introduction to Raman Spectroscopy, including practical aspects of Raman spectroscopy and complementary techniques; Dyes and Pigments; Artefacts; Biological Materials and Degradation; Jewellery and Precious Stones. The book contains a broad selection of real-world examples in the form of case studies to provide the reader with a true appreciation of the procedures that need to be invoked to derive spectroscopic information from some of the most challenging specimens and systems. Colour illustrations of objects of investigation and a database of 72 Raman spectra of relevant minerals are included. With its extensive examples, Raman Spectroscopy in Archaeology and Art History will be of particular interest to specialists in the field, including researchers and scientific/conservation staff in museums. Academics will find it an invaluable reference to the use of Raman spectroscopy.

Glow Discharge Optical Emission Spectroscopy - A Practical Guide (Hardcover): Richard Payling, Thomas Nelis Glow Discharge Optical Emission Spectroscopy - A Practical Guide (Hardcover)
Richard Payling, Thomas Nelis; Series edited by Neil W. Barnett; Contributions by Rick F. Browner, John M. Chalmers, …
R3,007 Discovery Miles 30 070 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Glow discharge optical emission spectroscopy (GDOES) is an essential technique for the direct analysis of bulk solids, for elemental surface analysis and for the depth profiling of thin films and industrial coatings. The technique has shown rapid growth in numbers of instruments, in breadth of applications, in improved quantification in recent years and is now a recognised technique within the ISO, with two international standards. Glow Discharge Optical Emission Spectroscopy: A Practical Guide takes the reader on a journey through instrument operation, sample preparation, analysis, and reporting results. It follows two sets of samples through the whole process of analysis, brass samples for bulk analysis, and zinc-coated steel for depth profiling. Procedures are consistent with recent ISO standards and each step is loaded with hands-on tips and theoretical insight. The book also includes unique data tables on spectral interferences, molecular bands, self-absorption and relative sputtering rates. This book is designed for those using or managing GDOES instruments and for students interested in learning the technique from a hands-on perspective. It is also an invaluable aid to those considering the purchase of a GDOES instrument, or those using GDOES results, to understand in detail how the technique works and what is involved in maintaining the instrument and achieving high quality results.

Industrial Analysis with Vibrational Spectroscopy (Hardcover, illustrated edition): Neil W. Barnett, John M. Chalmers, G. Dent Industrial Analysis with Vibrational Spectroscopy (Hardcover, illustrated edition)
Neil W. Barnett, John M. Chalmers, G. Dent; Series edited by Neil W. Barnett
R2,502 Discovery Miles 25 020 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Industrial Analysis with Vibrational Spectroscopy is an integrated work which emphasises the synergy and complementary nature of the techniques of infrared and Raman spectroscopy in industrial laboratories. The book is written in a pragmatic and straight-forward manner and is illustrated throughout with examples of real-world, everyday problems and applications. It provides a developed, realistic insight into industrial analysis with vibrational spectroscopy for both undergraduate and academic researcher, while additionally providing a straight-forward working tool of value to the industrial laboratory worker.

Molecular Characterization and Analysis of Polymers, Volume 53 (Hardcover): John M. Chalmers, Robert J. Meier Molecular Characterization and Analysis of Polymers, Volume 53 (Hardcover)
John M. Chalmers, Robert J. Meier
R6,572 Discovery Miles 65 720 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Written by expert contributors from the academic and industrial sectors, this book presents traditional and modern approaches to polymer characterization and analysis. The emphasis is on pragmatics, problem solving and property determination; real-world applications provide a context for key concepts. The characterizations focus on organic polymer and polymer product microstructure and composition.

-Approaches molecular characterization and analysis of polymers from the viewpoint of problem-solving and polymer property characterization, rather than from a technique championing approach
-Focuses on providing a means to ascertaining the optimum approach or technique(s) to solve a problem/measure a property, and thereby develop an analytical competence in the molecular characterization and analysis of real-world polymer products
-Provides background on polymer chemistry and microstructure, discussions of polymer chain, morphology, degradation, and product failure and additive analysis, and considers the supporting roles of modeling and high-throughput analysis

British Army Units Under US Army Control - Interoperability Issues (Paperback): Douglas M Chalmers British Army Units Under US Army Control - Interoperability Issues (Paperback)

World War II laid the foundations for a 'special relationship' between the UK and US, with security being its primary purpose. Since the end of that war, the threat of Soviet expansion caused it to deepen. Time changed the balance of the relationship, with Britain firmly becoming the junior partner. A side effect of this was that British troops were placed under US control during both the Korean and Gulf Wars. This monograph initially looks at the relationship to see if this situation could reoccur. As it finds that it is likely to reoccur, the remainder of the paper is used to identify issues that could reduce the efficiency of such a combined force in the future. In order to do this the Korean War is used as a case study. This war was chosen as it was the first and arguably the most complex operation to have seen British forces under US control. This paper finds that although the Armies were of equal capability, friction developed between the formation headquarters. The monograph speculates that the primary cause of this friction was a lack of understanding of the implicit intent of either side, which in turn led to occasional misunderstandings and inefficiencies. The monograph then looks at the forces in 2001 to see if the issues of 1950 remain relevant. Before conducting that comparison, it reviews the intervening fifty years. The paper notes that the problems identified in Korea were not as prevalent during the Gulf War. It argues that this was primarily because of NATO experiences and the use of an integrated staff. This chapter concludes by comparing the forces of both eras and finds the forces of 2001 to be in a far better position than those of the 1950's. However, it highlights that the bedrock of this position lies in the residual NATO experiences of its senior commanders, which is not being systematically replaced under the current education and training systems. The last chapter looks forward to the future and proposes that the reduction in the tactica
