Further Algebra and Applications is the second volume of a new and revised edition of P.M. Cohn's classic three-volume text "Algebra" which is widely regarded as one of the most outstanding introductory algebra textbooks. For this edition, the text has been reworked and updated into two self-contained, companion volumes, covering advanced topics in algebra for second- and third-year undergraduate and postgraduate research students. The first volume, "Basic Algebra", covers the important results of algebra; this companion volume focuses on the applications and covers the more advanced parts of topics such as: - groups and algebras - homological algebra - universal algebra - general ring theory - representations of finite groups - coding theory - languages and automata The author gives a clear account, supported by worked examples, with full proofs. There are numerous exercises with occasional hints, and some historical remarks.
These volumes contain the edited documents presented at the
NATO-Sponsored Advanced Research Workshop (ARW) on Partial
Pre8tre88ing, from Theory to Practice, held at the CEBTP Research
Centre of Saint-Remy-Ies-Chevreuse, France, June 18-22, 1984. The
workshop was a direct extension of the International Symposium on
Nonlinearity and Continuity in Pre8tre88ed Concrete, organized by
the editor at the University of Waterloo, Waterloo, Canada, July
4-6, 1983. The organization of the NATO-ARW on Partial Prestressing
was prompted by the need to explain and reduce the wide dirrerences
of expert oph: iipn. on the subject, which make more difficult the
accep tance of partial prestressing by the profession at large.
Specifically, the workshop attempted to: - produce a more unified
picture of partial presetressing, by con fronting and, where
possible, reconciling some conflicting American and European views
on this subject; - bring theoretical advances on partial
prestressing within the grasp of engineering practice; - provide
the required background for developing some guidelines on the use
of partial prestressing, in agreement with existing structural
concrete standards. The five themes selected for the workshop
agenda were: (1) Problems of Partially Prestressed Concrete (PPC).
(2) Partially Prestressed Concrete Members: Static Loading. (3) PPC
Members: Repeated and Dynamic Loadings. (4) Continuity in Partially
Prestressed Concrete. (5) Practice of Partial Prestressing."
This book presents a detailed summary of research on automatic
layout of device-level analog circuits that was undertaken in the
late 1980s and early 1990s at Carnegie Mellon University. We focus
on the work behind the creation of the tools called KOAN and
ANAGRAM II, which form part of the core of the CMU ACACIA analog
CAD system. KOAN is a device placer for custom analog cells;
ANANGRAM II a detailed area router for these analog cells. We
strive to present the motivations behind the architecture of these
tools, including detailed discussion of the subtle technology and
circuit concerns that must be addressed in any successful analog or
mixed-signal layout tool. Our approach in organizing the chapters
of the book has been to present our algo rithms as a series of
responses to these very real and very difficult analog layout
problems. Finally, we present numerous examples of results
generated by our algorithms. This research was supported in part by
the Semiconductor Research Corpora tion, by the National Science
Foundation, by Harris Semiconductor, and by the International
Business Machines Corporation Resident Study Program. Finally, just
for the record: John Cohn was the designer of the KOAN placer;
David Garrod was the designer of the ANAGRAM II router (and its
predeces sor, ANAGRAM I). This book was architected by all four
authors, edited by John Cohn and Rob Rutenbar, and produced in
finished form by John Cohn."
This book identifies the key scientific articles in the field of
Intensive Care and explains why these papers are important in
contemporary clinical management. Identifying those influential
contributors who have shaped the practice of modern Intensive care
practice, the book includes commentaries on 50 seminal papers in a
wide range of areas. enal This an invaluable reference for
trainees, fellows, and surgeons studying for exams, as well as for
seasoned surgeons and physicians who want to stay current in their
field.
In 50 Landmark Papers every Trauma Surgeon Should Know, editors
Stephen Cohn and Ara Feinstein have compiled a selection of the
most influential contributions to the specialty of trauma surgery.
This book comprises 50 thought-provoking reviews of carefully
selected papers and explains how trauma surgery practice has
changed as a result of this research. The selection of key papers,
the insights into the significance of each paper from trauma
experts, and the opportunity to read the original authors' thoughts
about their groundbreaking developments, make this a unique and
fascinating resource. Of interest to surgical residents and
trainees, Trauma and Surgical Critical Care fellows and all members
of the Trauma team. This is both an informative and personal look
at the foundation stones of modern Trauma care. Key Features Unique
commentaries by original authors and experts Demonstrates how
clinical practice has adapted following these landmark studies
Specialty-defining papers are brought to life, and their impact
assessed Shows how the insight and vision of individual surgeons
propelled change

In 50 Landmark Papers every Acute Care Surgeon Should Know, editors
Stephen Cohn and Peter Rhee have compiled a selection of the most
influential recent contributions to the specialty of acute care
surgery/emergency surgery. This book comprises 50 thought-provoking
and relevant topics, reviewing carefully selected papers to update
the readers on what has been published in the last decade. 50 key
papers cover the most relevant studies from a wide range of topics
from Acute Cholecystitis to Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia. This
book is of interest to surgical residents and trainees, Trauma and
Surgical Critical Care fellows and all members of the Acute Care
team. This is both an informative and personal look at
evidence-based topics, and is relevant to all general and acute
care surgeons. About the Editors Stephen M. Cohn, MD FACS
