The food industry faces an unprecedented level of scrutiny.
Consumers are not only concerned with the safety and quality of
food products but also the way in which they are produced. At the
same time the food industry has developed new ways of assuring
appropriate standards for its products and their methods of
production, developing systems such as TQM and HACCP to identify
and manage key steps in production. These new methods require new
skills in auditing. Auditing in the food industry provides an
authoritative guide to the range of standards and the auditing
skills they demand.
Part one sets the scene with an introductory chapter reviewing
developments in standards affecting the food industry. There then
follows chapters on how retailers audit their suppliers and how
governments have moved from a traditional inspection role to one of
'regulatory verification' with its emphasis on auditing the
robustness of a business's own systems for managing safety and
quality.
Part two examines the key aspects of safety and quality. A first
chapter reviews the ways retailers assess supplier HACCP systems.
There is then a chapter reviewing TQM systems that provides a
context for a discussion of auditing techniques for HACCP-based
quality systems. A final chapter looks at standards governing the
analytical methods used in safety and quality control.
Part three considers newer standards that are becoming increasingly
important in the food industry. There are chapters on benchmarking
an organisation against others as a way of improving performance,
auditing the impact of food processing operations on the
environment and auditing organic food processing.
Auditing in the food industry is a valuable guide to the range of
standards facing the food industry and the ways it can audit, and
thus improve the quality of its performance.
"Foucault on Politics, Society and War" interrogates Foucault's
controversial genealogy of modern biopolitics. By insisting on
'life' as the key referent of power in the modern age, Foucault
argues that politics grounds society in war, specifically race war,
in ways that come to threaten the very human existence it is
pledged to promote. These essays situate Foucault's arguments,
clarify the correlation of sovereign- and bio-power and examine the
relation of "bios, nomos" and race in relation to modern war.
From their location in the heart of Detroit, Michigan, the
Weisfelds' lab has reached out for thirty years to couples in
long-term partnerships around the world. In living rooms of
Detroit, London, Moscow, Beijing, and beyond, couples of all types
and ages have shared their insights into adult romantic
relationships. This book, The Psychology of Marriage, is a
distillation of these findings, which have appeared in dozens of
book chapters, journal articles, and conference presentations. The
book also provides new systematic comparisons that offer insights
into the mysteries of marriage and other committed relationships.
Scholars, professional counselors, and family therapists will find
a helpful framework for thinking about cultural similarities and
differences in marital dynamics. Researchers will be introduced to
a robust new instrument, the Marriage and Relationship
Questionnaire (MARQ), which can be used in heterosexual and
same-sex couples in virtually any cultural setting, along with
ethical guidelines for conducting this research. Anyone who is
interested in why committed relationships work (or do not work)
will find the book filled with compelling new insights.
Online Philanthropy in the Global North and South: Connecting,
Microfinancing, and Gaming for Change offers a critical examination
how online philanthropy operates through digital connectivity,
affective networks of well-meaning digital givers, and the
commodification of poverty through what is conceptualized as the
"digital subaltern." Chapters examine a range of online
philanthropy settings such as online microfinance platforms and
games for change, with case studies revealing unseen problems in
how digital inclusion and financialization are attempted through
the joint forces of NGOization and ITization.

Bildung and Paideia examines traditional humanistic ideals in light
of philosophical reflection on the need for education of the whole
human being. The study of what it is to be human is traditionally
the task of the humanities. In recent years, however, the
humanities have been increasingly subordinated to technological,
economic, and utilitarian aims. Do the humanities still have a
fundamentally distinct task to fulfil in education? Today's
reduction of educational outcomes to measurable competencies and
economically exploitable skills is opposed to traditional ideals
like that of Greek paideia and the German Romantic concept of
Bildung, which emphasized formation of the whole human being. The
present volume takes as its point of departure the conviction that
the study of 'the human experience'-whether through philosophy,
literature, religion, art, music, history, or languages-has
something specific to offer in the realm of education today. The
individual contributions examine the specific role of philosophy
and the humanities in education from ancient times to the present
and explore possibilities for conceiving philosophical models of
education. The chapters in this book were originally published as a
special issue of the journal Educational Philosophy and Theory.

This is the first English translation of Proclus' commentary on
Plato's Parmenides. Glenn Morrow's death occurred while he was less
than halfway through the translation, which was completed by John
Dillon. A major work of the great Neoplatonist philosopher, the
commentary is an intellectual tour de force that greatly influenced
later medieval and Renaissance thought. As the notes and
introductory summaries explain, it comprises a full account of
Proclus' own metaphysical system, disguised, as is so much
Neoplatonic philosophy, in the form of a commentary.

Thomas Jones is an unlikely hero. As average as a man can be,
thirty-five year old Thomas has lived a life of utter struggling
boredom. Shifting endlessly between jobs managing the efforts of
cashiers, dishwashers, and roller-skating waitresses, he is but
another floating soul in the void of retail Americana. Thomas is a
remarkably unremarkable man who lives with his mother in the small,
beachside locale of Wildwood NJ. Constantly in flux, it is ghostly
in winter and then set ablaze by the encroaching masses of boozy,
bong-smoking, board-walk marching high school seniors from Long
Island. Thomas is terror-stricken by their annual migration. One
morning., Thomas discovers a strange classified ad in the local
paper searching for a "Salty Bastard" to work in New York City for
a mysterious man called Moxy doing as yet undetermined work. Not
far away, on the outermost, opulent reaches of NYC's extended
phallus - Long Island - resides David Drahtman. He is a
small-dicked, shitty-eyed rodent of a man whose entire life
revolves around the work of avoiding his wife and children while
accumulating as much money possible. Over the course of a single
week, David and Thomas will come to do battle over the body of a
dead Chihuahua named Dolce (leaving behind his bereaved brother
gabbana.) In the background of this conflict, a host of mysterious
characters and subplots mingle. Mexican immigrants burning the
image of the Virgin Mary into grilled cheese to sell on E-Bay, glow
in the dark rosary beads, a pink Hummer, a thousand black rats, and
an elderly scientist who has built a machine that will make someone
a trillionaire. Behind it all, the man named Moxy works towards and
end that no one seems to know. All Thomas can be sure of is that
his task is to eat the rich alive.
