Negli ultimi anni le immagini hanno giocato un ruolo molto importante in molti settori dell'attivita umana. Anche in matematica l'uso di strumenti informatici con elevate capacita grafiche si sta diffondendo sempre di piu. Il volume e il risultato del congresso che si e tenuto a Bologna nell'ottobre 2000 che ha voluto riunire alcuni esperti nell'uso delle immagini. Sia coloro che realizzano gli strumenti tecnici che consentono poi di gestire la computer graphics, sia coloro che le immagini le utilizzano. Non solo quindi matematica, tecnica e computer graphics, ma anche i legami con l'arte e soprattutto con il cinema. Una larga parte del libro e dedicata infatti ai rapporti tra matematica e cinema, con articoli di registi, attori, sceneggiatori e matematici che hanno partecipato alla rassegna di film che si e tenuta a Bologna per due mesi.

Scienza e conoscenza, dice il drammaturgo e matematico Denis Guedj, possono fornire eccezionali spunti drammatici. Io ribalto la frase e insegno a scrivere "teatralmente" la Scienza. Vi sono esercizi, esempi, testi gi rappresentati o addirittura pubblicati il campo vasto, nuovo, da esplorare.
