The vast expansion of international trade has greatly increased the
incidence of cross-border ownership of assets, both tangible and
intangible. It is not uncommon, for instance, for a business to own
both physical plant and intellectual property in two or more
jurisdictions. Under these circumstances, it is vital for business
persons and their counsel to have some knowledge of a variety of
relevant domestic legal regimes, particularly in regard to
available remedies. This text provides the essential details of
such knowledge for 14 important commercial jurisdictions:
Argentina, Belgium, Bermuda, Canada, Germany, India, Japan,
Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, England and Wales
(United Kingdom), and the US. Each country survey is presented by
an experienced business law practitioner in his or her particular
jurisdiction. Each chapter's coverage includes discussion of
remedies under such security interests as: real estate; fixtures;
movables; patents; trademarks; and industrial models and designs.
Each author also explains important procedural aspects of many
typical phases of ownership, including registration, transfer, sale
of an ongoing concern or stock in trade, taxation, trusteeship, and
injunction orders. Remedies under private international law are
also considered.
By integrating neuroscience and social science, this book
introduces a bold new vision of Participatory Action Learning and
Action Research (PALAR). The authors explain and enhance the art of
action research through PALAR as a philosophy, methodology and
theory of learning and as a facilitation process for professional
learning and social justice.
Biofilms -- Science and Technology covers the main topics of
biofilm formation and activity, from basic science to applied
aspects in engineering and medicine. The book presents a masterly
discussion of microbial adhesion, the metabolism of microorganisms
in biofilms, modelling of mass transfer and biological reaction
within biofilms, as well as the behaviour of these microbial
communities in industry (waste water treatment, heat exchanger
biofouling, membranes, food processing) and in medicine (teeth,
implants, prosthetic devices). Laboratory techniques and industrial
monitoring methods are also presented. The book is directed at
readers at the postgraduate level and is organised as a textbook,
containing 11 chapters, a glossary, and a detailed subject index.
An offbeat and satirical work of what might be considered literary
fiction, The Chronicles of a Cynic is a loosely allegorical spin on
Dante's Purgatorio. This contemporary bildungsroman follows the
unlikely path of the title character--a writer/educator named Dan
Taylor-Gehry--across the country to teaching jobs, through loves
gained and lost, against encounters with the seven deadly sins,
amidst moderate success in writing and publishing, and ultimately
downward through his darkest psychological recesses. The cynic's
frenetic pace matches the transience of Kerouac's Sal Paradise, and
the bombastic tone of his narration evokes visions of Ignatius
Reilly waxing philosophical from behind a hot dog stand. With his
cynicism rooted in his desire for cultural purity, Taylor-Gehry
takes his idealism too far by resorting to ridiculous acts of
violence against others and himself. During his incarceration, he
is forced to prove his sanity by charting his life story, resulting
in this darkly comic novel of ideas.

Although this book is, in one sense, about Dorothy L. Sayers, it
significance is theological rather than biographical. Since the
mid-Twentieth Century, and the period when Anglican theology
appeared to be shaping Britain's post-War reconstruction in many
respects, it has generally been true that the church's commitment
to social action remained whilst its grasp of the theological
foundations for that action withered. The theological seriousness,
and the deep philosophical, theological and social arguments that
Sayers and her associates adduced for the church's social
engagement, were largely forgotten as the Church of England tended
to seek relevance in preference to theological authenticity. This
lack of theological depth made it easy for the church to revert to
an inward-looking pietism from the 1980s onwards which had little
if anything to say about the Christian vision of a good society. By
turning the spotlight on Sayers's contribution here, Fletcher shows
how the theological seriousness of her period was not the preserve
of bishops and clergy but could be, and was, integral to the
reflections of a highly intelligent lay woman who saw very clearly
how Christian faith could permeate the story of the world, humanity
and the created order.
Study of the phenomena of bacterial adhesion to surfaces has
accelerated considerably over the past 10 to 15 years. During this
period, microbiologists have become increasingly aware that
attachment to a substratum influences considerably the activities
and structures of microbial cells. Moreover, in many cases attached
communities of cells have important effects on their substratum and
the surrounding environment. Such phenomena are now known to be
important in plant and animal hosts, water and soil ecosystems, and
man-made structures and industrial processes. Much work on
microbial adhesion in the early 1970s was descriptive. Those
studies were important for detecting and describing the phenomena
of bacterial adhesion to substrata in various environments; the
findings have been presented in numerous recently published,
excellent books and reviews. In some studies, attempts were made to
elucidate some funda mental principles controlling adhesion
processes in different environments containing a variety of
microorganisms. Common threads have been observed occasionally in
different studies. Taken as a whole, however, the information has
revealed that many disparate factors are involved in adhesion
processes. Whether a particular microorganism can adhere to a
certain substratum depends on the properties of the microbial
strain itself and on charac teristics of the substratum and of the
environment.

usage of the terms substrate and substratum. A substrate (pI.:
substrates) is a material utilized by microorganisms, generally as
a source of energy. A substratum (pI.: substrata) is asolid surface
to which a microorganism mayattach. REFERENCES (1) Marshall, K.C.

subject, Mechanisms of Microbial Attachment, has proved to be a
fertile sour ce of argument between both microbiologists and
physical chemists. In order to find common ground for discussion,
the group endeavored to come to a consensus regarding a number of
definitions pertinent to the subject. Some of these are described
in the text and others will be found at the end of this report.
Presenting major advances in understanding learning disabilities
(LDs) and describing effective educational practices, this

The hippocampus and parietal cortex have been implicated in various core spatial behaviors, such as the ability to localise and navigate to an object. Damage to these areas in animals and humans impairs these spatial functions. This collection of papers, written by internationally recognized experts in the field, reviews the evidence that each area is involved in spatial cognition, examines the mechanisms underlying the generation of spatial behaviors, and considers the relative roles of the hippocampal and parietal areas, including how each interacts with the other. The papers integrate a wide range of theoretical and experimental approaches, and touch on broader issues related to memory and imagery. As such, this book offers the most up-to-date research on the neural basis of spatial cognition. It should be of interest to anyone working in the fields of cognitive science, neuroanatomy, neuropsychology, and general cognition.
