Robert S. Cohen, M. Horne, J. J Stachel
R2,947 Discovery Miles 29 470 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Potentiality, Entanglement and Passion-at-a-Distance is a book for theoretical physicists and philosophers of modern physics. It treats a puzzling and provocative aspect of recent quantum physics: the apparent interaction of certain physical events that cannot share any causal connection. These are said to be entangled' in some way, but an explanation remains elusive. Abner Shimony - to whom the book is dedicated - and others suggest the need to revive the category of what may be seen as a metaphysical potentiality. Abner has described these events without actions to link them as passion at a distance': not active, but passive. The discussions gathered here are written by a truly remarkable cast of scientists and philosophers and shed new light on the most profound puzzles of our times.

Democratic Governance and Social Entrepreneurship - Civic Participation and the Future of Democracy (Paperback): Denise M. Horn Democratic Governance and Social Entrepreneurship - Civic Participation and the Future of Democracy (Paperback)
Denise M. Horn
R1,285 Discovery Miles 12 850 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book explores the connection between strong democracy and neoliberal development schemes based on the concept of 'social entrepreneurship' in Thailand and Southern India. With an original approach, this book addresses the intersection between emerging approaches to development; namely microfinance, microenterprise, and social entrepreneurship, and the ability of societies to generate their own public goods without state assistance. Utilizing observation, fieldwork, and practice in Northern Thailand and Southern India, as well as secondary sources from the southern Asia region more generally, the author examines the challenges of democratic governance and generation of public goods where civil society and democracy, as development strategies, have become less meaningful to citizens across the developing world than micro-development. The author argues that these approaches to development have impacts on development and civil society building, but do not necessarily amount to political empowerment, raising important questions for civic participation in the state when the state is no longer viewed as the locus of public goods and democratic governance. Presenting a new theoretical approach to understanding the changing paradigm of development and political participation, Democratic Governance and Social Entrepreneurship will be of interest to students and scholars of development politics, political economy and governance.

Women, Civil Society and the Geopolitics of Democratization (Paperback): Denise M. Horn Women, Civil Society and the Geopolitics of Democratization (Paperback)
Denise M. Horn
R1,288 Discovery Miles 12 880 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Over the past decade, democratization and civil society promotion became key variables in preserving global security and the liberal economic market. This book examines the prevalence of democratization policies as a hegemonic geopolitical tool; these policies represent a concerted political effort in which civil society organizations are manipulated through funding strategies. Denise Horn offers a fresh, innovative feminist-constructivist perspective by arguing that Western gender norms-i.e. those norms that determine degrees of participation within civil society-inform the policies of hegemonic powers and transform the foundations of civil society in transitional states. This powerful volume will be of interest to students and scholars in Gender and Women's Studies, Political Science, and International Relations.

Handbook of Counseling Boys and Adolescent Males - A Practitioner's Guide (Paperback): Arthur M. Horne, Mark S Kiselica Handbook of Counseling Boys and Adolescent Males - A Practitioner's Guide (Paperback)
Arthur M. Horne, Mark S Kiselica
R3,597 Discovery Miles 35 970 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

?Arthur M. Horne and Mark S. Kiselica have gathered a large and impressive team of authorities from around the United States and New Zealand to produce a comprehensive volume on counseling boys. The contributing authors address a wide variety of developmental and cultural considerations pertaining to counseling boys, and they offer extremely useful recommendations for helping 11 special clinical populations of boys. I know of no other book on boys that is as broad in its scope or as practical in its approach as is this groundbreaking work.??Arnold A. Lazarus, Ph.D., ABPP,Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Psychology, Rutgers University ?This wonderful volume represents the advancing developments of the field, is broad and comprehensive in scope, offers outstanding clinical and practical suggestions, and includes a veritable ?who?s who? of counselors and psychologists among its contributors. Mental health professionals and graduate students will treasure this reference work.? ?Ronald F. Levant, Ed.D., ABPP, Dean, Center for Psychological Studies, Nova Southeastern University, Ft.Lauderdale, Florida ?The Handbook of Counseling Boys and Adolescent Males fills a gap in the counseling field by providing counselors in schools and community agencies with information that will guide them in expanding their services to the males with whom they work. The developmental background is very helpful to counselors in expanding their understanding of the nature of problems boys? experience in growing up; the section on cultural considerations illustrates sensitivity to the varying racial, ethnic intervention, and treatment programs that may be used in schools and community agencies. This book will be an extremely helpful resource for counselors in their work with boys and adolescent males, it is highly recommended for all mental health practitioners.? --Pamela Paisley, Ed.D The University of Georgia, President, Association of Counselor Education and Supervision ?As we try to understand the violence that has rocked our schools, one common denominator stands out: The perpetrators are all young males. School counselors confirm that there are a lot of angry young men out there. Why are they so angry? What can we do to better understand them? How can we help? This book promises to be a ?must read? for all school counselors.? ?Nancy S. Perry, NCC, NCSC, American School Counselor Association ?Arthur M. Horne and Mark S. Kiselica have produced a timely compendium which offers an exciting glimpse at important developments related to boys and men. This well thought out volume boldly ranges beyond conventional boundaries and will be a useful addition to the available literature on boys and men.?--Don C. Locke, Ph.D., North Carolina State University The Handbook of Counseling Boys and Adolescent Males provides the reader with a context for understanding the developmental dilemmas experienced by male youth and how male development, both adaptive and maladaptive, is shaped by a complex interaction of biological, cultural, and economic forces. This book is organized into three parts. Part I provides the reader with an understanding of how the psychological, career, and athletic development of boys is shaped by a complex interaction of biological, social, cultural, and economic forces. Part II covers cultural considerations pertaining to counseling with African American, Asian American, Hispanic American, Native American, and White, Non-Hispanic boys. Part III addresses special populations of boys, including gay boys, teenage fathers, sexually abused boys, boy sexual offenders, developmentally disabled boys, shy and anxious boys, depressed boys, bullies, male youth gangs, and boy substance abusers.

Transitional Justice and the Former Soviet Union - Reviewing the Past, Looking toward the Future (Paperback): Cynthia M. Horne,... Transitional Justice and the Former Soviet Union - Reviewing the Past, Looking toward the Future (Paperback)
Cynthia M. Horne, Lavinia Stan
R1,124 Discovery Miles 11 240 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In the twenty-five years since the Soviet Union was dismantled, the countries of the former Soviet Union have faced different circumstances and responded differently to the need to redress and acknowledge the communist past and the suffering of their people. While some have adopted transitional justice and accountability measures, others have chosen to reject them; these choices have directly affected state building and societal reconciliation efforts. This is the most comprehensive account to date of post-Soviet efforts to address, distort, ignore, or recast the past through the use, manipulation, and obstruction of transitional justice measures and memory politics initiatives. Editors Cynthia M. Horne and Lavinia Stan have gathered contributions by top scholars in the field, allowing the disparate post-communist studies and transitional justice scholarly communities to come together and reflect on the past and its implications for the future of the region.

The study of prosody is perhaps the area of speech research which has undergone the most noticeable development during the past ten to fifteen years. As an indication of this, one can note, for example, that at the latest International Conference on Spoken Language Processing in Philadelphia (October 1996), there were more sessions devoted to prosody than to any other area. Not only that, but within other sessions, in particular those dealing with dialogue, several of the presentations dealt specifically with prosodic aspects of dialogue research. Even at the latest Eurospeech meeting in Rhodes (September 1997), prosody, together with speech recognition (where several contributions dealt with how prosodic cues can be exploited to improve recognition processes) were the most frequent session topics, despite the fact that th'ere was a separate ESCA satellite workshop on intonation in conjunction with the main Eurospeech meeting which included over 80 contributions. This focus on prosodic research is partly due to the fact that developments in speech technology have made it possible to examine the acoustic parameters associated with prosodic phenomena (in particular fundamental frequency and duration) to an extent which has not been possible in other domains of speech research. It is also due to the fact that significant theoretical advances in linguistics and phonetics have been made during this time which have made it possible to obtain a better understanding of how prosodic parameters function in expressing different kinds of meaning in the languages of the world.

Building Trust and Democracy - Transitional Justice in Post-Communist Countries (Hardcover): Cynthia M. Horne Building Trust and Democracy - Transitional Justice in Post-Communist Countries (Hardcover)
Cynthia M. Horne
R2,956 Discovery Miles 29 560 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume explores the effects of transitional justice measures on trust-building and democratization across twelve countries in Central and Eastern Europe and parts of the Former Soviet Union over the period 19892012. The author argues that transitional justice measures have a differentiated impact on political and social trust-building, supporting some aspects of political trust and undermining other aspects of social trust. Moreover, the structure, scope, timing, and implementation of transitional justice measures condition outcomes. More expansive and compulsory institutional change mechanisms register the largest effects, with limited and voluntary change mechanisms having a diminished effect, and more informal and largely symbolic measures having the most attenuated effect. These differentiated and conditional effects are also evident with respect to transition goals like supporting democratic consolidation and reducing corruption, since these goals respond differently to the mixtures of institutional and symbolic reforms found in transitional justice programs. The author develops an original transitional justice typology in order to test hypotheses linking trust-building and transitional justice across twelve cases in the post-communist region. The resulting new datasets allow for a quantitative examination of the relationship between different types of transitional justice programs and a range of possible state building and societal reconciliation goals, including political trust-building, social trust-building, democratization, the strengthening of civil society, the promotion of government effectiveness, and the reduction of corruption. Comparative case studies of four transitional justice programs-Hungary, Romania, Poland, and Bulgariadraw on field work, primary and historical documents, and interview materials to explicate trust-building dynamics, with particular attention to regime complicity challenges, historical memory issues, and communist legacies. Oxford Studies in Democratization is a series for scholars and students of comparative politics and related disciplines. Volumes concentrate on the comparative study of the democratization process that accompanied the decline and termination of the cold war. The geographical focus of the series is primarily Latin America, the Caribbean, Southern and Eastern Europe, and relevant experiences in Africa and Asia. The series editor is Laurence Whitehead, Senior Research Fellow, Nuffield College, University of Oxford.
