This book explores the connection between strong democracy and
neoliberal development schemes based on the concept of 'social
entrepreneurship' in Thailand and Southern India. With an original
approach, this book addresses the intersection between emerging
approaches to development; namely microfinance, microenterprise,
and social entrepreneurship, and the ability of societies to
generate their own public goods without state assistance. Utilizing
observation, fieldwork, and practice in Northern Thailand and
Southern India, as well as secondary sources from the southern Asia
region more generally, the author examines the challenges of
democratic governance and generation of public goods where civil
society and democracy, as development strategies, have become less
meaningful to citizens across the developing world than
micro-development. The author argues that these approaches to
development have impacts on development and civil society building,
but do not necessarily amount to political empowerment, raising
important questions for civic participation in the state when the
state is no longer viewed as the locus of public goods and
democratic governance. Presenting a new theoretical approach to
understanding the changing paradigm of development and political
participation, Democratic Governance and Social Entrepreneurship
will be of interest to students and scholars of development
politics, political economy and governance.

Over the past decade, democratization and civil society promotion
became key variables in preserving global security and the liberal
economic market. This book examines the prevalence of
democratization policies as a hegemonic geopolitical tool; these
policies represent a concerted political effort in which civil
society organizations are manipulated through funding strategies.
Denise Horn offers a fresh, innovative feminist-constructivist
perspective by arguing that Western gender norms-i.e. those norms
that determine degrees of participation within civil society-inform
the policies of hegemonic powers and transform the foundations of
civil society in transitional states. This powerful volume will be
of interest to students and scholars in Gender and Women's Studies,
Political Science, and International Relations.

A practical blueprint to rebuilding an education system that is no
longer working for its students In From Reopen to Reinvent,
distinguished education strategist Michael B. Horn delivers a
provocative and eye-opening call to action for the overthrow of an
education system that is not working well for any of its students.
Grounded in what educators should build in its place to address the
challenges that stem from widespread unmet learning needs, the book
walks readers through the design of a better path forward. Using
time-tested leadership and innovation frameworks like Jobs to Be
Done, "Begin with the End," tools of cooperation, threat-rigidity,
and discovery-driven planning, From Reopen to Reinvent offers a
prescriptive and holistic approach to the purpose of schooling, the
importance of focusing on mastery for each student, and the ideal
use of technology. It also provides readers with: A set of
processes and ideals that schools should implement to deal with the
challenges they presently face A way to transform threats into
opportunities using threat-rigidity research A discussion of how
the COVID-19 pandemic revealed that schools are not as flexible and
equitable as we need them to be Perfect for K-12 educators and
parents and school board members involved in the school community,
From Reopen to Reinvent is also an essential resource for
professionals working in education-related non-profits and state
education agencies.
This volume provides practitioners with clear, helpful information
about the process of understanding and engaging a wide array of
boys and adolescent males in counseling. It supplies case examples
and covers topics including race, ethnicity, religion, and other
cultural factors of boys. A practical tool for school and mental
health practitioners who need to understand and respond to the
developmental and special issues of boys and adolescent males,
Counseling Troubled Boys creates a bridge between young men and
helping professionals. Key content includes adjustment issues,
strategies for establishing rapport, interventions, case studies,
and suggestions for future training and research.
Experimental Metaphysics is intended for theoretical physicists and
philosophers of science and is devoted to fundamental issues in the
quantum domain. The book presents a number of discussions of
experiments, theoretical puzzles and alternative interpretations,
and philosophical treatments of the metaphysical foundations of
science and the way these throw a scientific light on metaphysics.
Hence the title: experimental metaphysics' is a term coined by
Abner Shimony, to whom the book is dedicated. This collection of 16
scientific and philosophical essays by leading physicists,
philosophers and historians of science deals with current research
and the most basic issues in quantum physics.
The study of prosody is perhaps the area of speech research which
has undergone the most noticeable development during the past ten
to fifteen years. As an indication of this, one can note, for
example, that at the latest International Conference on Spoken
Language Processing in Philadelphia (October 1996), there were more
sessions devoted to prosody than to any other area. Not only that,
but within other sessions, in particular those dealing with
dialogue, several of the presentations dealt specifically with
prosodic aspects of dialogue research. Even at the latest
Eurospeech meeting in Rhodes (September 1997), prosody, together
with speech recognition (where several contributions dealt with how
prosodic cues can be exploited to improve recognition processes)
were the most frequent session topics, despite the fact that th'ere
was a separate ESCA satellite workshop on intonation in conjunction
with the main Eurospeech meeting which included over 80
contributions. This focus on prosodic research is partly due to the
fact that developments in speech technology have made it possible
to examine the acoustic parameters associated with prosodic
phenomena (in particular fundamental frequency and duration) to an
extent which has not been possible in other domains of speech
research. It is also due to the fact that significant theoretical
advances in linguistics and phonetics have been made during this
time which have made it possible to obtain a better understanding
of how prosodic parameters function in expressing different kinds
of meaning in the languages of the world.

This volume deals with a wide range of topics including the
representation of tones and intonation, evidence for and
constraints on prosodic phrasing, prosodic boundary detection,
articulatory dynamics of stress, timing in speech, and prosodic
correlates of speaking style, as well as the perception of prosodic
prominence. The book offers investigators in all areas of speech
communication a comprehensive and coherent presentation of
contemporary prosodic research.
Potentiality, Entanglement and Passion-at-a-Distance is a book for
theoretical physicists and philosophers of modern physics. It
treats a puzzling and provocative aspect of recent quantum physics:
the apparent interaction of certain physical events that cannot
share any causal connection. These are said to be entangled' in
some way, but an explanation remains elusive. Abner Shimony - to
whom the book is dedicated - and others suggest the need to revive
the category of what may be seen as a metaphysical potentiality.
Abner has described these events without actions to link them as
passion at a distance': not active, but passive. The discussions
gathered here are written by a truly remarkable cast of scientists
and philosophers and shed new light on the most profound puzzles of
our times.

theoretical frameworks, as well as studies that provide new
insights by approaching language from an interdisciplinary
perspective. TRENDS IN LINGUISTICS considers itself a forum for
cutting-edge research based on solid empirical data on language in
its various manifestations, including sign languages. It regards
linguistic variation in its synchronic and diachronic dimensions as
well as in its social contexts as important sources of insight for
a better understanding of the design of linguistic systems and the
ecology and evolution of language. TRENDS IN LINGUISTICS publishes
monographs and outstanding dissertations as well as edited volumes,
which provide the opportunity to address controversial topics from
different empirical and theoretical viewpoints. High quality
standards are ensured through anonymous reviewing.
