Optimizing Project Work, Management, and Delivery: Gary L. Richardson, Brad M. Jackson Optimizing Project Work, Management, and Delivery
Gary L. Richardson, Brad M. Jackson
R1,647 Discovery Miles 16 470 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Thousands of project management–related books have been written. Why is Optimizing Project Work, Management, and Delivery different? This book represents the authors’ experiences gained from looking at the problem of project management for 50 years and wondering why projects cannot be more successful. Experience from various management models and techniques has helped but still does not fit reality or provide accurate forecasts. Industry surveys have compiled the root causes of project failure, and yet they persist. Is there no answer to this problem? As the book explains, the management solution is not in the models or the theory but is found in how they are mapped against the actual target project characteristics. This is the book’s unique strength. There are major coverage gaps in current project management models that also need to be recognized. All of the existing models are correct in some ways, and yet each is also wrong. The book starts by reviewing popular models and related topics that help construct the building blocks of an integrated model structure, which is at the core of this book. The integrated model described here is meant to be a decision-oriented view related to the project life cycle rather than a cookbook of success steps. Project management is too complex for a cookbook approach. This text helps managers find that right path.

The Foundations of Public Finance (Hardcover): Peter M. Jackson The Foundations of Public Finance (Hardcover)
Peter M. Jackson
R12,155 Discovery Miles 121 550 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Foundations of Public Finance presents the most important articles and papers tracing the development of public finance from the earliest tolls and customs duties levied on goods and land to more complex tax systems up to 1950.A signal contribution of this collection is that it allows the founding fathers to describe the development of different schools or doctrines in their own words. It is a fascinating story showing how economic analysis develops partly as a response to the need to gain a deeper insight into practical questions such as 'how progressive should a tax systems be?'. The volume is a companion to and complements Modern Public Finance edited by A.B. Atkinson (also in The International Library of Critical Writings in Economics series) which covers the recent developments in public finance from 1950.

Gary L. Richardson, Brad M. Jackson
R1,414 Discovery Miles 14 140 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Project Management: Theory and Practice, Third Edition gives students a broad and real flavor of project management. Bringing project management to life, it avoids being too sterilely academic and too narrowly focused on a particular industry view. It takes a model-based approach towards project management commonly used in all industries. The textbook aligns with the latest version of the Project Management Institute's Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK (R)) Guide, which is considered to be the de facto standard for project management. However, it avoids that standard's verbiage and presents students with readable and understandable explanations. Core chapters align with the Project Management Institute's model as well as explain how this model fits real-world projects. The textbook can be used as companion to the standard technical model and help those studying for various project management certifications. The textbook takes an in-depth look at the following areas important to the standard model: Work Breakdown Structures (WBS) Earned Value Management (EVM) Enterprise project management Portfolio management (PPM) Professional responsibility and ethics Agile life cycle The text begins with a background section (Chapters 1-9) containing material outside of the standard model structure but necessary to prepare students for the 10 standard model knowledge areas covered in the chapters that follow. The text is rounded out by eight concluding chapters that explain advanced planning approaches models and projects' external environments. Recognizing that project management is an evolving field, the textbook includes section written by industry experts who share their insight and expertise on cutting-edge topics. It prepares students for upcoming trends and changes in project management while providing an overview of the project management environment today. In addition to guiding students through current models and standards, Project Management: Theory and Practice, Third Edition prepares students for the future by stimulating their thinking beyond the accepted pragmatic view.

While Glaciers Slept weaves together the parallel stories of what happens when the climates of a family and a planet change. Dr. M Jackson reveals how these events are deeply intertwined, and how the deterioration of her parents’ health was as devastating as the inexorable changing of Earth’s climate. Nonetheless, the book shows that even in the darkest of times we cannot lose hope.Dr. Jackson guides us to solar, wind, and geothermal solutions, bringing us along on her expeditions to research climate change and to educate people about how to stop it. Scientists are continually looking for better ways to translate hard science into human language and that is precisely what this book does. Climate change, she convinces us, is not just about science—it is also about the audacity of human courage and imagination.

Virginia Tech celebrates its 150th anniversary in 2022. Established in Southwest Virginia to promote agricultural, mechanical, and military education, the fledgling school grew into a comprehensive research university with a global land-grant mission. No Ordinary Moment: Virginia Tech, 150 Years in 150 Images explores the history of the school, from its mid-nineteenth-century origins as Virginia Agricultural and Military College to present-day Virginia Tech. The book features approximately 150 illustrations, including rare photographs and unique items from the Special Collections and University Archives at Virginia Tech and other campus sources.Compiled and written by Virginia Tech archivists, No Ordinary Moment is organized around three principal themes-the land-grant mission, the evolving campus, and the long tradition of innovation-which, taken together, provide an overlapping view of Virginia Tech's past, present, and future. Along the way, the book highlights the many notable milestones in the university's history, including its founding as a land-grant college in 1872, the granting of university status in 1970, and the arrival of female students and students of color. Likewise, the book illuminates the long-standing curricular strengths of the university in engineering, agriculture, architecture, and the sciences, as well as the liberal arts, athletics program, and social traditions shared by students, alumni, and the community. Also covered are the establishment of the Virginia Cooperative Extension and colleges for medicine and veterinary medicine, and Virginia Tech's leading example in new technological fields and applied sciences, such as cybersecurity, transportation, autonomous vehicles, and bioinformatics. No Ordinary Moment is a book for anyone who wants to learn more about the history and culture of Virginia Tech-from alumni, faculty, and students to members of the Hokie nation wherever they might live.

The PayPal Wars - Battles with Ebay, the Media, the Mafia, and the Rest of Planet Earth (3rd Revised edition): Eric M Jackson The PayPal Wars - Battles with Ebay, the Media, the Mafia, and the Rest of Planet Earth (3rd Revised edition)
Eric M Jackson
R419 Discovery Miles 4 190 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Peter Thiel, Elon Musk, and the rest of the “PayPal Mafia†are now household names who’ve reshaped technology, automobiles, space travel, and politics. But two decades ago, they were unsung entrepreneurs attempting to launch a Silicon Valley startup against overwhelming odds.   That improbable journey started in the shadow of Stanford University, when Thiel met Max Levchin, a Ukrainian engineer who recently moved to California. Years before anyone had heard of Bitcoin, the two set out to build an online payment service that could reduce government control over currency by empowering people around the globe. But after their startup, PayPal, survived the dot-com crash only to find itself besieged by an unimaginable series of challenges, that lofty dream threatened to become a nightmare.   Former insider Eric M. Jackson’s telling of PayPal’s origins is an eyewitness account to technology history, as well as an engrossing story of human struggle and perseverance against overwhelming odds. PayPal went from unknown startup to online powerhouse in just three years, but for the company's team it was not an easy journey. The entrepreneurs that joined together to overhaul world currency markets first had to face one of the greatest series of trials ever thrown at a startup before becoming part of Silicon Valley lore. Jackson's lively, blow-by-blow account of PayPal's death-defying beginnings and ferocious battles offers a detailed perspective that only an eyewitness could provide. Read The PayPal Wars and you'll learn how: Elon Musk joined with Peter Thiel, and how the two future titans would soon square off to control the company. Organized crime attempted to ransack PayPal—but the company fought back. Government bureaucrats and regulators ferociously tried to shut down the upstart payments service. Turmoil pushed PayPal to the brink of insolvency before Thiel and his team turned the business around. “Our clashes with the credit card associations, the banking lobby, state regulators, foreign Mafioso, and litigation-happy lawyers significantly increased†as the company’s profile grew, writes Jackson, adding that the initial public offering that was meant to strengthen PayPal with an infusion of cash ironically attracted a rogue's gallery of foes instead. "The modern business environment," Jackson concludes, "turned out to be more hostile than even our fiercest competitor." This somber warning—that regulators, lawyers, and lobbyists threaten to undermine American entrepreneurship—makes The PayPal Wars a timely read for every concerned citizen.

Geographer, adventurer, environmental educator, 2018 TED Fellow and National Geographic Society Emerging Explorer Dr. M Jackson studies and writes about glaciers and climate change worldwide. Seeking to understand the wild diversity and complexity that exists between people and ice, Jackson lived for a year on the south-eastern coast of Iceland, chronicling in The Secret Lives of Glaciers the cultural and societal impacts of glacier change on local communities. Jackson interviewed hundreds of Icelanders living in close proximity to ice, seeking to understand just what was at stake as the island's ice disappeared. Painstakingly detailed, Jackson recounts stories of glaciers told by people throughout the region, stories exploring the often conflicting and controversial plasticity of glaciers, the power glaciers enact in society, the possible sentience of glaciers, and the range of intertwined positive and negative consequences glacier change produces throughout Iceland. The Secret Lives of Glaciers reaches beyond Iceland and touches on changing glaciers everywhere, revealing oft-overlooked interactions between people and ice throughout human history. The Secret Lives of Glaciers delivers a critical message: understanding glaciers and people together teaches us about how human society worldwide experiences being in the world today amidst increasing climatic changes and anthropogenic transformation of all of Earth's systems.Instead of creating another catalogue of all the ice the world is losing, The Secret Lives of Glaciers explores what we may yet find with glaciers: hope for humanity, and the possibility of saving this world's glaciers.

Nietzsche and Suffered Social Histories - Genealogy and Convalescence (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed.... Nietzsche and Suffered Social Histories - Genealogy and Convalescence (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2017)
Jeffrey M. Jackson
R2,703 Discovery Miles 27 030 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book presents a reading of Nietzsche as a thinker of the suffered social histories of subjectivity. It suggests that Nietzsche's concept of genealogy needs the concept of convalescence to be coherent. Genealogy is a form of reflection that traces the suffered scenes of which that reflection is symptomatic, whereas convalescence is the ordeal of reflection's coming to bear its limits within scenes of embodied suffering. This theme is developed by appeals to Freud's notion of mourning and the object relations theories of Melanie Klein and D.W. Winnicott, which insist on the primacy of suffered relationality in the genesis of subjectivity. Moreover, Adorno's notion of negative dialectics and its emphasis on the primacy of the object are suggested as an alternative context within which to read Nietzsche's writing, in contrast with dominant modes of criticism. The discussion will appeal to anyone interested in Nietzsche, critical theory and the relationship between psychoanalysis and philosophy.

R3,466 Discovery Miles 34 660 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book examines the reciprocity that exists between the body and the urban built environment. It will draw on archival and ethnographic research as well as an interdisciplinary literature on cultural materialism, semiotics, and aesthetics to challenge dualist interpretations of four different points of historical-material contact in Cape Town, South Africa. Each chapter attends to different groups, social practices, and historical periods, but all share the fundamental questions: how does material culture reflect the way social agents make meaning through bodily contact with urban built form, and how does such meaning challenge the ways bodies are objectified? Further, how can we make sense of the historical processes embedded in the objectification of bodies without treating the social and the material, the mental and the physical as separate realities?

Roger L Patterson, Larry W. Dupree, David A. Eberly, Gary M. Jackson, Michael J. O'Sullivan, …
R1,561 Discovery Miles 15 610 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

That older patients can be successfully treated has only recently been recognized by professionals and by older persons themselves. That older persons can also be taught new skills or retaught previously existing skills constitutes even newer knowledge. By focusing on the reversibility 0/ behavioral defidts in the elderly the authors, under the leadership of Dr. Roger Patterson, have made both a scientific and a humanitarian contribution to the well-being of older persons. In this volume they have presented a theoretical basis and a practical how-to method of overcoming behavioral deficits. They have demonstrated that their modular technique of fostering improved functioning in such areas as activities of daily living and sodal skills not only has been successful but also has allowed individuals to return to less restrictive environments or to completely independent living. The approach is an interdisciplinary one, appropriately since older people often experience diffirulties in multiple areas of function ing. The authors have tried to integrate social, medical, and behav ioral approaches, with an emphasis on behavioral methodologies. Although this book deals primarily with behavioral approaches to treatment of the elderly in a single setting, the volume c1early con stitutes achallenge to other scientists and clinicians to apply the techniques described here in other settings. A medical colleague of mine, a geriatrician, recently expressed the opinion that he had never encountered an older patient for whom he could not do something to improve health."

The Psychology of Prejudice - From Attitudes to Social Action (Paperback, 2nd Revised edition): Lynne M. Jackson The Psychology of Prejudice - From Attitudes to Social Action (Paperback, 2nd Revised edition)
Lynne M. Jackson
R2,182 Discovery Miles 21 820 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Given the weaponization of difference in politics, education, and social media today, the need to understand and fight prejudice is urgent. The Psychology of Prejudice: From Attitudes to Social Action presents a comprehensive and nuanced review of the psychological underpinnings of prejudicial thoughts and behaviors. Author Lynne M. Jackson analyzes the psychological mechanisms that underlie and maintain various forms of prejudice, such as learned behavior, implicit bias, and evaluative and affective conditioning. She highlights the developmental psychological roots of prejudice, and examines how individuals weigh social values differently and favor ingroup members. In doing so, she demonstrates in vivid detail how, as Allport wrote,"defeated intellectually, prejudice lingers emotionally." Jackson's interdisciplinary approach shows how theoretical insights in psychology, sociology, and other disciplines can help explicate complex social phenomena. Using updated case examples and compelling research, this second edition challenges students to think deeply about the troubling growth of overt expressions of prejudice in society today. It also offers a blueprint to help readers combat prejudice in their lives and beyond, to create real and lasting social change.
