This volume contains papers presented at the NATO Advanced Research Workshop (ARW) Dynamic Interactions in Quantum Dot Systems held at Hotel Atrium in Puszczykowo, near Poznan, Poland, May 16-19,2002. The term low-dimensional systems, which is used in the title of this volume, refers to those systems which contain at least one dimension that is intermediate between those characteristic ofatoms/molecules and those ofthe bulk material. Depending on how many dimensions lay within this range, we generally speak of quantum wells, quantum wires, and quantum dots. As such an intermediate state, some properties of low-dimensional systems are very different to those of their molecular and bulk counterparts. These properties generally include optical, electronic, and magnetic properties, and all these are partially covered in this book. The main goal of the workshop was to discuss the actual state of the art in the broad area ofnanotechnology. The initial focus was on the innovative synthesis of nanomaterials and their properties such as: quantum size effects, superparamagnetism, or field emission. These topics lead us into the various field based interactions including plasmon- magnetic spin- and exciton coupling. The newer, more sophisticated methods for characterization of nanomaterials were discussed, as well as the methods for possible industrial applications. In general, chemists and physicists, as well as experts on both theory and experiments on nanosized regime structures were brought together, to discuss the general phenomena underlying their fields ofinterest from different points ofview.
Organized nanoassemblies of inorganic nanoparticles and organic molecules are building blocks of nanodevices, whether they are designed to perform molecular level computing, sense the environment or improve the catalytic properties of a material. The key to creation of these hybrid nanostructures lies in understanding the chemistry at a fundamental level. This book serves as a reference book for researchers by providing fundamental understanding of many nanoscopic materials.
An astonishing and unique novel inspired by the author's own story `I highly recommend Dark Chapter...post-rape numbness, stifled rage, female victim alternating with rapist - how circumstances and accident come together tragically.' Joyce Carol Oates Vivian is a cosmopolitan Taiwanese-American tourist who often escapes her busy life in London through adventure and travel. Johnny is a 15-year-old Irish teenager, living a neglected life on the margins of society. On a bright spring afternoon in West Belfast, their paths collide during a horrifying act of violence. In the aftermath, each is forced to confront the chain of events that led to the attack. Inspired by true events, this is a story of the dark chapters and chance encounters that can irrevocably determine the shape of our lives. Book Prizes: Winner of The Guardian Not The Booker Prize Shortlisted for The Authors' Club Best First Novel Award Nominated to The Edgars Awards Highly Commended for CWA Debut Dagger What Reviewers and Readers Say: 'Complex and rewarding... an important book,' Stylist 'Heart-wrenching depiction... Brave, raw and strikingly original, it is a story that will resonate for many years,' Daily Mail 'An important and moving book about rape and the long process of recovery,' Cathy Rentzenbrink 'Dark Chapter is a fascinating book, which takes an unflinching look at reality of sexual violence. I have never found myself rooting for a heroine with more urgency than in Dark Chapter,' Kate Rhodes 'Deftly written, pacey and unflinching, I could not put it down. Winnie M Li is a rare talent with an explosive and timely story. Do not miss it,' Marti Leimbach `Dark Chapter is a must-read. It's gripping, compelling and all the more authentic for inhabiting both voices so completely. Stunning,' Erin Kelly 'Winnie M Li handles alternate points-of-view seamlessly in Dark Chapter, an unflinching lens on the sexual assault landscape and one that should be applauded,' Ali Land `An authentic, courageous debut, told with unflinching honesty and exceptional insight,' A.D. Garrett `A powerful story, compassionately told,' Ros Barber `An accomplished debut, an honest and unsparing story,' Cath Stanicliffe 'Lyrical, haunting and hypnotic. Winnie Li yanks us into the abyss, luring us to confront the complexities of our humanity before expertly pulling us out. An important novel from a ballsy new literary heroine. A must read,' Irenosen Okojie 'The novel is as disturbing and entertaining as any crime thriller is. But Li is writing from experience, fictionalising her attack as a way to explore how the legal system treats rape victims, and the real effects of such an experience. Most interestingly, Li fleshes out the mind of the rapist: the experiences that have shaped him and which legitimise his behaviour to himself. I really want lots of people to find it and read it.' Sara Pascoe `Extraordinarily courageous... humbling... A remarkable book to read in this time.' A.L. Kennedy

This volume marks a turning point in the study of Chinese economic history. It arose from a realization that the economic history of China-as opposed to the history of the Chinese economy-had yet to be written. Most histories of the Chinese economy, whether by Western or Chinese scholars, tend to view the economy in institutional or social terms. In contrast, the studies in this volume break new ground by systematically applying economic theory and methods to the study of China. While demonstrating to historians the advantages of an economic perspective, the contributors, comprising both historians and economists, offer important new insights concerning issues of long-standing interest to both disciplines. Part One, on price behavior, presents for the first time preliminary analyses of the incomparably rich and important grain price data from the imperial archives in Beijing and Taibei during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). These studies reveal long-term trends in the Chinese economy since the seventeenth century and contain surprising discoveries about market integration, the agricultural economy, and demographic behavior in different regions of China. The essays in Part Two, on market response, deal with different aspects of the economy of Republican China (1912-49), showing that markets for land, labor, and capital sometimes functioned as predicted by models of economic "rationality" but at other times behaved in ways that can be explained only by combining economic analysis with knowledge of political, regional, class, and gender differences. Based on new types of data, they suggest novel interpretations of the Chinese economic experience. The resulting collection is interdisciplinary scholarship of a high order, which weaves together the analytic framework provided by economic theory and the rich texture of social phenomena gathered by accomplished historians. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press's mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. [the book] emphasizes the basic science underlying the practice of surgery and the evidence supporting clinical decisions. The text is clearly written and the chapters are well-illustrated. There is also a unique feature: several hundred evidence-based tables. These tables allow the reader to reach conclusions on the basis of data." -- New England Journal of Medicine "Is it different from the existing textbooks of surgery? Did the authors achieve their principal goal of providing an evidence-based approach to surgical decision making? Would I recommend it to the surgical residents in my program?...the answer to all these questions is yes. The ambitious undertaking of creating an evidence-based textbook of surgery has largel succeeded and I heartily recommend it." -- Journal of the American Medical Association "During a period of numerous adventures into the textbook arena, this is different in focus and quality. The 130 contributors constitute an excellent group of young surgeons, who, along with the editors, have stayed the course with this interesting format. Surgery: Basic Science and Clinical Evidence is reader friendly with excellent illustrations and 200 evidence-based tables. -- Archives of Surgery
This monumental work provides a new perspective on the historical significance of famines in China over the past three hundred years. It examines the relationship between the interventionist state policies of the eighteenth-century Qing emperors ("the golden age of famine relief"), the environmental and political crises of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries (when China was called "the Land of Famine"), and the ambitions of the Mao era (which tragically led to the greatest famine in human history). In addition to a wide array of documentary sources, the book employs quantitative analysis to measure the economic impact of natural crises, state policies, and markets. In this way, the theories of Qing statesmen that have received much attention in recent scholarship are linked to actual practices and outcomes. Using the Zhili-Hebei region as its focus, the book also reveals the unusual role played by the institutions and policies designed to ensure food security for the capital, Beijing.

Few world cities have a record as long, as fascinating, or as well-documented as Beijing's. A capital almost continuously for more than a thousand years, the city has been Khubilai Khan's Mongol headquarters, home to emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties, and the main stage for Communist-era achievements and upheavals. "Beijing" is the first book in English to trace this vibrant city's history from its earliest days to the present. It highlights recent changes in the city as its more than fifteen million people live through record-level economic growth and intensive preparations for the 2008 Olympics. Focusing on the lives of ordinary residents and rulers alike, the authors examine the controversial destruction of historic districts as well as the construction of new residential and business districts and Olympic venues. Extensive photographs and paintings, many not previously published, offer a window onto Beijing not only in major phases of its past, but also in its startlingly different present. Compelling and revealing, Beijing arrives just in time for the city's turn in the Olympic spotlight.
A cellular automaton is a discrete model studied in computability theory, mathematics, physics, complexity science, theoretical biology and microstructure modelling. It consists of a regular grid of cells, each in one of a finite number of states, such as "On" or "Off". The grid can be in any finite number of dimensions. For each cell, a set of cells called its neighbourhood (usually including the cell itself) is defined relative to the specified cell. This book presents current research from across the globe in the study of cellular automata, including using cellular automata to solve optimisation problems; modelling drug release science using cellular automata; using the cellular automata model to study the dispersion of aphids and ladybugs in a block of citric trees; and the reversibility of cellular automata.
The development of modern China's most important export commodity, silk, is traced from the opening of the treaty ports to the 1930s. This study examines the silk industry, one of China's most advanced traditional economic enterprises, as it moved into large-scale trade with the West. And it especially considers whether traditional economic organizations and practices encouraged or inhibited the expansion of the industry and its technological modernization. The silk industry is presented as a microcosm of China's encounter with the modern world market, focusing on such topics as the role of the state, the relationship between treaty ports and rural producers, the domestic market, and the financing and organization of the modern sector. Such important issues as the "sprouts of capitalism" argument and Japan's assumption of first position in the modern world silk market are authoritatively and convincingly illuminated.
