The Developmental Challenges of Mining and Oil - Lessons from Africa and Latin America (Hardcover): Rosemary Thorp, S... The Developmental Challenges of Mining and Oil - Lessons from Africa and Latin America (Hardcover)
Rosemary Thorp, S Battistelli, Y. Guichaoua, J Orihuela, M. Paredes
R2,785 Discovery Miles 27 850 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The authors explain why the discovery and development of natural resources is commonly associated with unstable and unequal development, and frequently with violence. They demonstrate the need for policies and institutions by reflecting on both successes and failures in case studies on Botswana, Nigeria and Niger as well as Bolivia, Chile and Peru.

Microquasars - Proceedings of the Third Microquasar Workshop Granada Workshop on Galactic Relativistic Jet Sources Granada,... Microquasars - Proceedings of the Third Microquasar Workshop Granada Workshop on Galactic Relativistic Jet Sources Granada, Spain, 11-13 September 2000 (Hardcover, Reprinted from ASTROPHYSICS AND SPACE SCIENCE, 276, 2001)
Alberto J. Castro-Tirado, Jochen Greiner, Josep M. Paredes
R4,340 Discovery Miles 43 400 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Third Microquasar Workshop (or the 'Fifth' Workshop on Galactic Relativ istic Jet Sources), was held in Granada, Andalucia (Spain) on 11-13 September 2000. The aim of this workshop in Granada, following the previous Microquasar Workshops in Greenbelt (1997) and Paris (1998) and the Workshops on galactic sources with relativistic jets in Jodrell Bank (1996) and Milton Keynes (1998), was to focus on the theoretical and observational aspects of microquasars. The study of microquasars, the sources in our Galaxy displaying powerful re lativistic jets, is a rapidly advancing field in astrophysics. The new instrumentation on ground (MERLIN, SCUBA, VLA, VLT) and aboard satellites (ASCA, BSAX, ISO, IXAE and RXTE) has provided important results, and much more is expected to come from Chandra and XMM-Newton. In the further future, powerful instru mentation will come online in the sub-mm (ALMA) and gamma-rays (INTEG RAL), extending our coverage to important regions for the study of microquasars. Energy transport via relativistic jets is one of the most important physical mechan isms taking place in compact objects. Large efforts have been devoted to properly understand the disk-jet connection, and even the effects of rotation or magnetic fields. Several new important advances have been made recently, both from the point of view of the theoretical treatment of jets and the different new observational tests."

Ethnicity and the Persistence of Inequality - The Case of Peru (Hardcover): R. Thorp, M. Paredes Ethnicity and the Persistence of Inequality - The Case of Peru (Hardcover)
R. Thorp, M. Paredes
R1,480 Discovery Miles 14 800 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Understanding why inequality is so great and has persevered for centuries in a number of Latin American countries requires tools that go beyond economics. Inequality between indigenous groups and others has been particularly harsh and persistent. This book applies a truly interdisciplinary approach to the specific case of Peru, seeking out the dynamics of the interactions between the society, the polity, the geography and the economy. Ethnic discrimination and prejudice emerge as central themes, explored through people's own perceptions and life experiences. The book attempts to extend the boundaries of our understanding and contributes to the growing interest in ethnicity and conflict by developing and exploring the interactions between institutions and the inequalities between groups.

Using Focus Groups to Listen, Learn, and Lead in Higher Education (Hardcover): Mona J.E. Danner, J.Worth Pickering, Tisha M.... Using Focus Groups to Listen, Learn, and Lead in Higher Education (Hardcover)
Mona J.E. Danner, J.Worth Pickering, Tisha M. Paredes
R3,875 Discovery Miles 38 750 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Using Focus Groups to Listen, Learn, and Lead in Higher Education presents an easy-to-use 6-step guide to help leaders in higher education listen to and learn from their stakeholders in order to enhance decision making. The big questions facing institutions today, especially those surrounding access, affordability, and accountability, require more than dashboards. Metrics and quantitative data alone do not offer lasting solutions and improvements. Using qualitative methods to listen to the voices of those involved, especially students and staff, is critical. Focus groups constitute the most appropriate, rigorous, and relevant qualitative research tool for this purpose, and one that is cost-effective and builds community when conducted using the ODU Method described in this book. Using Focus Groups is a single, comprehensive, and practical resource that describes why, when, and how to use focus groups. The authors provide detailed guidance for using focus groups, from developing the research questions with stakeholders, through training and recruiting moderators, and identifying and recruiting participants, to the logistics of conducting focus groups, and ultimately analyzing data and developing final reports. Conversational vignettes illustrate the discussions that regularly occur in each step and help the reader better understand the process. Fifteen appendices provide templates and examples of every part of the process. Written particularly for institutional research and assessment staff and upper-level administrators, this book will also appeal to deans, department and program chairs and directors, faculty leaders, and administrative unit directors, including those in auxiliary and student services, alumni associations, and university foundations. It also serves as an excellent resource for higher education research methods courses. The authors are uniquely positioned to guide readers in this process. The team developed and refined this technique over two decades at Old Dominion University. They have conducted over 100 focus groups with campus, nonprofit, local, and international community organizations to assist them in assessing student learning, transition, and preparedness for the workforce, as well as evaluating organizations work and planning future projects.

The Multi-Messenger Approach to High-Energy Gamma-Ray Sources - Third Workshop on the Nature of Unidentified High-Energy Sources (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2007)
Josep M. Paredes, Olaf Reimer, Diego F. Torres
R4,514 Discovery Miles 45 140 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book provides a theoretical and observational overview of the state of the art of gamma-ray astrophysics, and their impact and connection with the physics of cosmic rays and neutrinos. With the aim of shedding new and fresh light on the problem of the nature of the gamma-ray sources, particularly those yet unidentified, this book summarizes contributions to a workshop that continues today.
