Examining modern Muslim identity constructions, the authors introduce a novel analytical framework to Islamic Studies, drawing on theories of successive modernities, sociology of religion, and poststructuralist approaches to modern subjectivity, as well as the results of extensive fieldwork in the Middle East, particularly Egypt and Jordan.
It would have been difficult at the beginning of the 80's to have predicted that by the end of the decade, Medical Virology would have become one of the most important topics in the area of both basic and clinical research. Although we were expecting a progressive increase in awareness of the role played by viruses in different diseases, we did not expect the outbreak of a fatal disease that was going to shake the roots of our society. The appearance of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV-1) in the early 80's, has prompted a unique re search impetus in the area of Medical Virology. The knowledge that we are gaining in our attempt to understand the biology of HIV-1 and the immuno logical response to this virus should not only help us control the spread of this virus, but should also help us to better understand other viral infections. Let us hope that during the 1990's we can learn how to control HIV-1 infections so that by the end of the decade, no more human lives succumb to an infection with this virus. Luis M. de la Maza Irvine, California Ellena M. Peterson March, 1990 v ACKNO EDGEMENTS We would like to thank all the speakers that came to San Francisco and shared their knowledge during the lectures and for writing the chapters in this book."
This book provokes a debate between social theory and Islamic studies. Drawing on theories of successive modernities, sociology of religion, and poststructuralist approaches to modern subjectivity formation, it introduces a novel analytical framework to the study of Middle Eastern societies. The authors explore ways in which Muslims have constructed meaningful modern selfhoods, providing their reader with unique insights into the ongoing social transformation of the Middle East. Making Islamic charities and youth organizations their primary site of investigation, they combine studies on Islamic reform with case studies on social activism in Egypt and Jordan. In criticizing theses about the alleged uniqueness of Western modernity, the book challenges exclusivist assumptions about both Western modernity and contemporary Islamic ways of life. In this way, it makes original contributions to conceptual discussions on modernity and our knowledge of modern Muslim societies.
This qualitative study was designed to gain an in-depth understanding of the role of the principal in successfully improving English Language Learner (ELL) educational outcomes in high poverty schools. It is based on interviews with five elementary principals who were employed by Hillsboro School District during the SET-R grant from school years 2007-2010. Three questions guided this study. First, how do the principals promote or implement school culture expectations and best instructional practices in elementary schools with high ELL populations? Second, what level of general knowledge about leadership characteristics do the principals possess whose students performed well academically as measured by OAKS in elementary schools with high ELL populations? Third, what do the principals regard as an effective approaches to comprehensively serve ELL populations? This topic continues to be a concern for administrators given the persistent achievement gap between ELLs and their peers at the secondary level despite some gains in the primary grade levels.
This book is a collection of short stories about events, people and places of life growing up in rural Iowa spanning several decades of the early and middle Twentieth Century. Most of the stories are real events and memories. A few are fictional accounts, but are based on real people and places. The author's Danish ancestors colored the events of the author's life, but many events were common to all people of the era. The stories relate the experience of intense joys and deep sorrows as well as the every day events of life, weaving the necessary lessons to be learned into the fabric of life in that era.
