Addressing the debate around what makes a good citizen, this work
proposes a new form of post-colonial citizenship education which
can be applied in any cultural setting. International educational
partnerships provide the opportunity for participants to live out
values such as cultural empathy and thus demonstrate their right to
citizenship.
This comprehensive new two-volume work provides the reader with a
detailed insight into the use of the finite element method in
geotechnical engineering. As specialist knowledge required to
perform geotechnical finite element analysis is not normally part
of a single engineering degree course, this lucid work will prove
invaluable. It brings together essential information presented in a
manner understandable to most engineers.Volume 1 presents the
theory, assumptions and approximations involved in finite element
analysis while Volume 2 concentrates on its practical applications.
Beyond Brain Death offers a provocative challenge to one of the
most widely accepted conclusions of contemporary bioethics: the
position that brain death marks the death of the human person.
Eleven chapters by physicians, philosophers, and theologians
present the case against brain-based criteria for human death. Each
author believes that this position calls into question the moral
acceptability of the transplantation of unpaired vital organs from
brain-dead patients who have continuing function of the circulatory
system. One strength of the book is its international approach to
the question: contributors are from the United States, the United
Kingdom, Liechtenstein, and Japan. This book will appeal to a wide
audience, including physicians and other health care professionals,
philosophers, theologians, medical sociologists, and social
workers.
The subspecialty of genitourinary or pelvic pain suffers from
the lack of objective data and level-1 evidence. Genitourinary Pain
and Inflammation: Diagnosis and Management of GU-ITIS is a
compilation of skilled creativity based upon critical review of the
literature, consensus reports, and professional experiences. It
includes detailed chapters that address iatrogenic causes of GU
inflammation, caused by catheters, prosthetics, radiation, or
chemotherapy. Chapters in Genitourinary Pain and Inflammation:
Diagnosis and Management of GU-ITIS also discuss pain syndromes
specific to the pelvic floor and the genitourinary system from
several perspectives. Experts in the urological and
gastrointestinal fields provide the specifics for gaining the basic
understanding of inflammation and pains caused by infectious
etiologies.
Extensively revised and updated, the second edition of Essential
Urology: A Guide to Clinical Practice provides support to primary
care physicians through its review of common genitourinary
problems. This edition continues to provide the primary care
physician with tools to better recognize urological diseases as
well as updated management strategies for these disorders. To
enhance the theme of comprehensive care and family medicine, the
volume is formatted according to the life cycle and the urological
challenges, which may be detected and diagnosed by primary care
physicians respective of the patient's stage in life, beginning
with pregnancy and in utero diagnoses. Pediatric themes such as
infection and voiding dysfunctions are followed by adult urological
topics ranging from prostate diseases, nephrolithiasis, overactive
bladder syndromes, incontinence and urological cancer screening.
Three new chapters are added addressing male infertility/andrology
and the growing demand for integrative and alternative medical care
of urologic patients, as well as commonly encountered
dermatological problems in the genital area. Essential Urology: A
Guide to Clinical Practice, Second Edition is extremely
comprehensive and yet, very accessible. It is authored by experts
representing the spectrum of urological subspecialties, further
enhancing the value of this unique work.
The Last Dance: Encountering Death and Dying provides a
comprehensive, up to date, and readable introduction to the study
of death and dying. It directs attention to the evolving
understanding of death and dying in today's culturally diverse
environment. In a straightforward, conversational style, with an
extensively illustrated format, The Last Dance provides a solid
grounding in theory and research as well as in methods for applying
what is learned to readers' own circumstances, both personal and
professional. No other textbook so successfully combines the
research and theories of such diverse disciplines as anthropology,
art, ethics, health science, literature, philosophy, psychology,
public policy, religion, and sociology. The eleventh edition of The
Last Dance includes coverage of key topics yet retains the focus,
writing, and pedagogy instructors have come to expect from the
best-selling text in death studies. Instructors and students can

Cyanobacteria make a major contribution to world photosynthesis and
nitrogen fixation, but are also notorious for causing nuisances
such as dense and often toxic blooms' in lakes and the ocean. The
Ecology of Cyanobacteria: Their Diversity in Time and Space is the
first book to focus solely on ecological aspects of these
organisms. Its twenty-two chapters are written by some thirty
authors, who are leading experts in their particular subject. The
book begins with an overview of the cyanobacteria - or blue-green
algae, for those who are not specialists - then looks at their
diversity in the geological record and goes on to describe their
ecology in present environments where they play important roles.
Why is one of the key groups of organisms in the Precambrian still
one of the most important groups of phototrophs today? The
importance of ecological information for rational management and
exploitation of these organisms for commercial and other practical
purposes is also assessed. Accounts are provided of nuisances as
well as the ecology of the commercially successful Spirulina and
the role of cyanobacteria in ecosystem recovery from oil pollution.
Many chapters include aspects of physiology, biochemistry,
geochemistry and molecular biology where these help general
understanding of the subject. In addition there are three chapters
dealing specifically with molecular ecology. Thirty-two pages of
colour photos incorporate about seventy views and light
micrographs. These features make the book valuable to a wide
readership, including biologists, microbiologists, geologists,
water managers and environmental consultants. The book complements
the highly successful The Molecular Biology of Cyanobacteria
already published by Kluwer.

infectious etiologies are presented by experts in urological and
gastrointestinal fields. Pain syndromes specific to the pelvic
floor or genitourinary system are discussed from several

surgical or alternative methods are likewise presented within the
context of specific disease entities, as well as separate
therapeutic chapters.
The need to improve maternal and child health care may be the most
important global health need of the remaining years of the
twentieth century. It is central to the World Health Organization's
(WHO) goal of Health for All by the Year 2000. The vast majority of
births occur in developing countries, where maternity care is often
rudimentary. The rates of maternal and infant morbidity and death
for these countries are extremely high but much of the morbidity
and death is preventable, even with the limited resources available
for health care in many parts of the world. The resources devoted
to maternal and child care should be greatly expanded, but even the
most hopeful projections will leave a wide gap between human needs
and available services. WHO estimates that two billion deliveries
in the remaining two decades of this century will not be attended
by a trained person. At a minimum, it is probable that two million
of these women will die in childbirth. There were approximately 130
million births in the world in 1980.
Greek vases and Peruvian bottles, Chinese bronzes and African
masks, Tel Brak idols and Egyptian tomb paintings -- artifacts
ancient and modern reveal man's universal fascination with the eye
and his awe before its mysterious powers. In this wide-ranging and
richly illustrated essay Albert M. Potts considers the special
properties the human mind has ascribed to the eye over the millenia
and seeks out its peculiar significance as symbol. Amulets against
the Evil Eye persist today in nearly every part of the world.
Almost as pervasive is the conception of the Good Eye, itself used
as a protective amulet. The Eye of Horus, for example, was one of
the holiest symbols of the ancient Egyptian religion, and its
descendants can still be found in the Mediterranean basin. Using
artifacts and texts, the folklore of our own times, and aspects of
the unconscious revealed by Jungian psychology, Potts reveals the
diverse forms and meanings of this powerful symbol.

U.S. intelligence specialist James M. Potts shows how covert French
military aid changed the course of history by enabling the
rebellious Americans to hold off the forces of George III, most
notably in the pivotal battle of Saratoga in October 1777. Potts
probes the actions of Louis XVI's government in secretly providing
vital arms and ammunition to George Washington's forces-and
much-needed subsidies to the Continental Congress-in the critical
early years of the American Revolution, 1776 to 1778. Drawing
heavily on contemporaneous French government archives and other
historical sources, Potts brings to life the colorful leading
characters in the drama: French Foreign Minister le Comte de
Vergennes; Vergennes's principal agent, the playwright
Beaumarchais; Lord Stormont, King George's ambassador in Paris;
Benjamin Franklin, the wily American Commissioner in Paris; and
numerous perpetrators of high intrigue on land and sea. Highly
effective British counterespionage operations, whose American
agents had penetrated Franklin's mission in Paris, even intercepted
his letters to the Continental Congress. Joining the Americans
openly in 1778 in their war against the British, France moved e
This book covers issues of men's health, including screening,
diagnosis and management of common disorders and opportunities for
prevention and health maintenance. Each chapter pertains to a
component of the physical exam and/or organ system. Examples
include appropriate survey and screening of the integument, the
significance of buccal/dental integrity, tailoring cardiovascular
remedies and balancing prostate cancer screening with quality of
life. The book follows the methodical approach of a comprehensive
wellness visit, including inventory of psychosocial factors, which
significantly impact physical well-being. Justification for often
overlooked topics in the review of systems, such as sexual history
and satisfaction, relationship issues, and vocational fulfillment
are provided. This book is written in the spirit of the rich
bedside acumen and the art of healing, we must strive to protect.
While informative and stimulating, this text serves to remind us of
the specialized diagnostic tools we carry between our ears, and the
power of healing we possess in our hands as well as the counsel and
education we provide to our patients. Men's Health: A Head to Toe
Guide for Clinicians serves as an important and readily accessible
resource for primary care physicians, internists and fa mily
doctors, physician's assistants and nurse practitioners who care
for adult males.
