A third of poor people are disabled in the developing world. How
much do we know about their livelihood with hard data? Are they
entirely powerless and dependent on family members? How do they
earn income? These questions have become more important than ever,
now that persons with disabilities (PWDs) in developing countries
have awakened to rights and entitlements and that the international
community started considering the incorporation of disability into
the context of poverty reduction. This book highlights
opportunities and challenges faced by PWDs in the developing
countries. This book also illustrates the analyses with a case
study which was conducted in the Philippines and this case study
has made a good progress in legislation for PWDs. A field survey
was jointly conducted by the Institute of Developing Economies,
Japan, and the Philippine Institute for Development Studies in
Metro Manila, the capital city of the Philippines, in 2008. Around
400 PWDs were interviewed, and the data was investigated with
econometrics. The book highlights a remarkable disparity in
earnings and education among PWDs. The book also examines the
positive role of organizations such as Disabled People's
Organizations and how empowerment of PWDs is made through
dissemination of useful information such as programs given by the
central and local governments. The book concludes that all
measures, i.e. education, training, DPOs and institutional
preferences, must be mobilized harmoniously to boost the livelihood
of PWDs sinking in the bottom stratum in income.

The "greening" of industry processes, i.e. making them more
sustainable, is a popular and often lucrative trend which has
emerged over recent years. The 3rd volume of Green Chemical
Processing considers sustainable chemistry in the context of
corporate interests. The American Chemical Society's 12 Principles
of Green Chemistry are woven throughout this text as well as the
series to which this book belongs.
The feeding of human milk to socially and biologically unrelated
infants is not a new phenomenon, but the Euroamerican values of
individualism have generated expectations that mothers are
individually responsible for feeding their own infants. Using a
bio-communities of practice framework, this dynamic new analysis
explores the emotional and material dimensions of the growing milk
sharing practice in the Global North and its implications for
contemporary understandings of infant feeding in the US. Ranging
widely across themes of motherhood, gender and sociology, this is a
compelling empirical account of infant feeding that stimulates new
thinking about a contentious practice.
The concepts of the neuroendocrine system and the immune system
emerged more or less simultaneously in the second half of the 20th
century. Although these systems have a high degree of autonomy, it
has also become clear that they interact in many ways and at
different levels. This book focuses on the neuroendocrine and
immune interactions that are fundamental to normal development and
maintenance of health. The first introductory chapters are devoted
to the historical and philosophical concepts within the field, as
well as evolutionary considerations, offering critical
interdisciplinary perspectives on the development of this field of
research. Without attempting an exhaustive overview, the book then
introduces some of the regulatory pathways that mediate
interactions between the neuroendocrine and immune systems and
examines modulating factors such as age and sex. In addition,
several chapters address the importance of neuroendocrine-immune
interactions in some disease states. Readers can expect to gain a
broad perspective of neuroendocrine-immune interactions in
development, health, and disease, along with a critical evaluation
of current methods used in the field. Given its scope, the book is
essential reading for undergraduate and graduate students with an
interest in neuroendocrinology, neuroimmunology, and neuroscience,
as well as postdoctoral fellows and established researchers seeking
a comprehensive overview and historical perspective of the field of
neuroendocrine-immune interactions.
Psychiatric Encounters presents an intimate portrait of a public
inpatient psychiatric facility in the Southeastern state of
Yucatan, Mexico. The book explores the experiences of patients and
psychiatrists as they navigate the challenges of public psychiatric
care in Mexico. While international reports condemning conditions
in Mexican psychiatric institutions abound, Psychiatric Encounters
considers the large- and small-scale obstacles to quality care
encountered by doctors and patients alike as they struggle to live
and act like human beings under inhumane conditions. Beatriz Mireya
Reyes-Foster closely examines the impact of the Mexican state's
neoliberal health reforms on how patients access care and doctors
perform their duties. Engaging with madness, modernity, and
identity, Psychiatric Encounters considers the enduring role of
colonialism in the context of Mexico's troubled contemporary mental
health care institutions.
