Control of Breathing during Sleep - From Bench to Bedside (Hardcover): Susmita Chowdhuri, M. Safwan Badr, James A Rowley Control of Breathing during Sleep - From Bench to Bedside (Hardcover)
Susmita Chowdhuri, M. Safwan Badr, James A Rowley
R6,245 Discovery Miles 62 450 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book describes control of ventilation during sleep in both health and disease states. The topics are presented in a fashion that can be easily comprehended with many figures to illustrate complex concepts. Thus, a wide range of topics, starting from the site of normal respiratory rhythm generation to chemoreceptor control of sleep apnea, description of the apneic threshold, pathophysiology of upper airway closure, novel techniques to measure control of breathing, effect of cerebral blood flow on breathing, effect of opioids on ventilation, effect of heart failure on ventilation, genetic aspects of breathing disorders, age and gender differences, and various therapies are discussed. Key Features * Helps to bridge the gap between straight forward physiology and clinical practice through a range of topics and use of case vignettes * Explores various aspects of clinical management and control which is beneficial to sleep clinicians, respiratory physiologists, intensivists, trainees, and researchers. * Distills complex concepts into understandable language and figures, providing helping resource to the clinicians, that transforms a dry topic vis a viz control of ventilation into an exciting understandable 'clinician' language.

M. Safwan Badr, Jennifer L. Martin
R3,525 Discovery Miles 35 250 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book provides an overview of sleep and sleep disorders for practicing clinicians. Sleep disorders represent a major portion of the chief complaints seen by pulmonologists and other clinicians. Patients with sleep-related conditions often present with non-specific complaints that require a broad and detailed knowledge of the wide range of sleep disorders and their consequences. This concise, evidence-based review of sleep medicine offers a guide to pulmonologists, primary care physicians, and all clinicians involved in caring for patients with sleep disorders. Providing a focused, scientific basis for the effects of sleep on human physiology, especially cardiac and respiratory physiology, chapters also outline a differential diagnosis for common sleep complaints and an evidence-based approach to diagnosis and management. This includes a review of the current standards of practice and of emerging technology and unresolved issues awaiting further research. In all, this book provides a clear diagnostic and management program for all the different sleep disorders and includes key points and summaries. This new edition expands the scope of the previous to include additional sleep disorders and the most affected populations. Six new chapters are added on health disparities in sleep medicine, models of care for patients with sleep disorders/care coordination, sleep disordered breathing in pediatric populations, sleep in hospitalized patients, sleep in pregnancy, and sleep in older patients. Essentials of Sleep Medicine is an invaluable resource for physicians, clinical psychologists, respiratory care practitioners, polysomnographic technologists, graduate students, clinical researchers, and other health professionals seeking an in-depth review of sleep medicine.

Essentials of Sleep Medicine - An Approach for Clinical Pulmonology (Paperback, 2012 ed.): M. Safwan Badr Essentials of Sleep Medicine - An Approach for Clinical Pulmonology (Paperback, 2012 ed.)
M. Safwan Badr
R4,527 Discovery Miles 45 270 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Sleep disorders represent a major portion of the chief complaints seen by pulmonologists and other physicians. Sleep apnea and hypopnea syndrome for example, are common disorders with significant adverse health consequences. Sleep apnea is associated with increased cardiovascular mortality, impaired quality of life and increased motor vehicle accidents. In addition, sleep apnea often co-exists with other chronic conditions including obesity, the metabolic syndrome, and tobacco use disorder. Patients with sleep-related conditions often present with non-specific complaints that require a broad and detailed knowledge of the wide range of sleep disorders.

In Essentials of Sleep Medicine: An Approach for Clinical Pulmonology, a concise, evidence-based review of sleep medicine for the pulmonologist is presented. Each chapter includes a summary of current research and outlines future research directions and issues. In all, Essentials of Sleep Medicine: An Approach for Clinical Pulmonology provides a clear diagnostic and management program for all the different sleep disorders, with a major focus on respiratory disorders of sleep, and includes key points and summaries. Developed by an international group of renowned authors, Essentials of Sleep Medicine: An Approach for Clinical Pulmonology is an invaluable resource for pulmonologists, respiratory care practitioners, polysomnographic technologists, graduate students, clinical researchers, and other health professionals seeking an in-depth review of sleep medicine.

Effect of ventilatory motor output on upper airway mechanics (Paperback): Abdulghani Sankari, M. Safwan Badr Effect of ventilatory motor output on upper airway mechanics (Paperback)
Abdulghani Sankari, M. Safwan Badr
R1,312 Discovery Miles 13 120 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Pharyngeal narrowing/obstruction during sleep is often described as an inspiratory phenomenon resulting from obstructive hypopnea/apnea. It is unknown, however, whether central hypopnea can lead to airway narrowing. This book reviews recent orginal studies that evaluated changes in upper airway mechanics and caliber during sleep using imaging techniques. The main findings of this book is that upper airway is narrower during central hypopnea predominantly during the expiratory phase. The inhibition of ventilatory motor output during sleep increases expiratory retro palatal compliance. The increased airway resistance, reduced pharyngeal caliber, and increased pharyngeal compliance as a result of hypocapnia, indicates its possible role in the pathogenesis of upper airway obstruction during sleep.
