From the colonial through the antebellum era, enslaved women in the
US used lethal force as the ultimate form of resistance. By
amplifying their voices and experiences, Brooding over Bloody
Revenge strongly challenges assumptions that enslaved women only
participated in covert, non-violent forms of resistance, when in
fact they consistently seized justice for themselves and organized
toward revolt. Nikki M. Taylor expertly reveals how women killed
for deeply personal instances of injustice committed by their
owners. The stories presented, which span centuries and legal
contexts, demonstrate that these acts of lethal force were
carefully pre-meditated. Enslaved women planned how and when their
enslavers would die, what weapons and accomplices were necessary,
and how to evade capture in the aftermath. Original and compelling,
Brooding Over Bloody Revenge presents a window into the lives and
philosophies of enslaved women who had their own ideas about
justice and how to achieve it.
Developed in the classroom by two of the most prominent researchers
in the field, Feenstra and Taylor's International Economics is a
modern textbook for a modern audience, connecting theory to
empirical evidence and expanding beyond the traditional focus on
advanced companies to cover emerging markets and developing
economies. Essentials of International Economics, Third Edition is
the brief version of that textbook designed for a one-semester
course covering both international trade and international
macroeconomics. The new edition has been thoroughly updated,
including the latest on the Eurozone crisis.

This work is about how the allied coalition and the governement of
Iraq attempted to influence, utilize and manipulate the ways in
which the Gulf War was presented by the media to the outside world
between mid January and early March 1991. It is only in part about
the media coverage of the conflict per se since the book
concentrates on the point at which the policy and the presentation,
the war and the media, came together on both sides to form
propaganda. It also embraces, as far as it is possible to do so, a
preliminary examination of psychological warfare method employed
during the war.
A classic work, Munitions of the mind traces how propaganda has
formed part of the fabric of conflict since the dawn of warfare,
and how in its broadest definition it has also been part of a
process of persuasion at the heart of human communication. Stone
monuments, coins, broadsheets, paintings and pamphlets, posters,
radio, film, television, computers and satellite communications -
throughout history, propaganda has had access to ever more complex
and versatile media. This third edition has been revised and
expanded to include a new preface, new chapters on the 1991 Gulf
War, information age conflict in the post-Cold War era, and the
world after the terrorist attacks of September 11. It also offers a
new epilogue and a comprehensive bibliographical essay. The
extraordinary range of this book, as well as the original and
cohesive analysis it offers, make it an ideal text for all
international courses covering media and communications studies,
cultural history, military history and politics. It will also prove
fascinating and accessible to the general reader.
The Vital Landscape explores the arrival of the biological sciences
- most notably the sciences oflife entailed in studies of botany
and zoology, ecology and evolutionary science, physiology and
psychology - in the nineteenth century and their impact on
architecture and landscape architecture in Great Britain.
Specifically, the book explores the idea of the contrived or
artificial environment as an object of both scientific speculation
and aesthetic reflection. Unlike specialist histories of biological
science or environmental thought, this book is unique in locating
one source for present-day concerns for the environment and human
well-being in debates over proper housing and the growing
popularity of domestic and public gardens in the nineteenth
century. The book skilfully interweaves architecture and garden
history, the history and philosophy of science, plant and animal
physiology and human psychology, works of literature, popular
science and domestic economy in a story that opens new
opportunities for the study of architecture and gardens.
What changes in China's modern defense policy reveal about military
organizations and strategy Active Defense offers the first
systematic look at China's military strategy from the mid-twentieth
century to today. Exploring the range and intensity of threats that
China has faced, M. Taylor Fravel illuminates the nation's past and
present military goals, and offers a rich set of cases for
deepening the study of how and why states alter their defense
policies.

Bringing together the reflections of an architectural theorist and
a philosopher, this book encourages philosophers and architects,
scholars and designers alike, to reconsider what they do as well as
what they can do in the face of challenging times. It does so by
exploring the notion that architecture and design can (and possibly
should), in their own right, make for a distinctive form of ethical
investigation. The book is less concerned with absolutist
understandings of the two components of ethics, a theory of 'the
good' and a theory of 'the right', than with remaining open to
multiple relations between ideas about the built environment,
design practices and the plurality of kinds of human subjects
(inhabitants, individuals and communities) accommodated by
buildings and urban spaces. The built environment contributes to
the inculcation of all sorts of values (good and bad). Thus, this
book aims to change the way people commonly think about ethics, not
only in relation to the built environment, but to themselves, their
ways of thinking and modes of behaviour.
Metals in pharmaceuticals have played an increasingly important
role in medicine over the last century, particularly in cancer
therapy and diagnostic imaging methods. Medicinal Applications of
Coordination Chemistry focuses on the role that transition metals
play in clinical applications. Medicinal Applications of
Coordination Chemistry begins with a brief historical review and an
introduction to the chemistry of d- and f- block metals. Subsequent
sections discuss metallodrugs for a number of different
applications, the design of new drugs and the relationship between
structure and function. Key sections include diagnostic
applications of metal compounds in anatomical and functional
imaging, and therapeutic applications of metals compounds. This
book is ideal for researchers in academia and industry and comes
complete with examples of real life applications.
This unique book tells the story of a select group of schools and
teachers who have managed to beat the odds in terms of improving
elementary students reading achievement. Originating with the CIERA
"School Change Project" directed by Barbara Taylor and David
Pearson, it was subsequently expanded to include the work of other
research teams doing similar work. It combines large scale studies
of effective schools and teachers (Part I) with case studies of
individual schools and teachers who have successfully transformed
research findings into situation-specific strategies appropriate to
their schools and classrooms (Parts II and III). The book's
distinct contribution is showing that no matter how consistent the
research findings on effective school and classroom practice,
groups of teachers must improvise their own situation-specific
programs and practices. In short, they must be able to create
variations on a common theme. Key features of this outstanding new
volume include:
*Integration of research and cases--One cannot fully understand
research-based general principles without knowing how they play
themselves out in specific settings. Similarly, one cannot fully
understand cases without seeing the commonalities across different
schools and classrooms sharing similar goals. This book provides
both perspectives.
*Diverse cases--The schools and classrooms depicted in this book
are urban, rural, and suburban; poor and middle class; and
English-only and bilingual. Rather than telling readers how to beat
the odds, it provides them with a wide variety of cases from which
they can extrapolate to build their own customized teaching
programs and practices.
*Summarizing section--The final section contains a summary of
research on effective schools and teachers and a concluding chapter
by Gerry Duffy and Jim Hoffman in which they reflect on the book's
content and possible directions for future research.
The book is targeted to both in-service elementary teachers and
literacy students in advanced college courses.

This book discusses, in relatively simple language, the importance
of even minute amounts of certain trace elements for the protection
of human health and how insufficiency or excess may produce serious
diseases. It also examines the use of metal chelators in the
treatment of such diseases. Trace Element Medicine and Chelation
Therapy looks at the role of metal ions in the evolution and
development of living systems and reviews the elemental composition
of the human body, the essential biochemistry of metal ions, metal
complexes, and the concepts of chemical speciation, as well as the
interactions of metals with chelating agents, ligands and drugs.
The problems of delivering adequate amounts of trace elements to
the human body and the roles of metal containing drugs are also
discussed, while the role of chelating agents in the treatment of
both spontaneous and accidental overload and the dietary and
environmental aspects of such treatment are both comprehensively
reviewed. Trace Element Medicine and Chelation Therapy will assist
chemists in understanding more about these metal ions and the
influences of industrialization and pollution, and will illuminate
physicians involved in administering chelation therapy. It
illustrates the interdisciplinary nature of the subject and will be
of immense interest to students and researchers in chemistry,
biochemistry, nutrition and food science, environmental sciences,
pharmacology and medicine, as well as to school science teachers
and scientifically oriented members of the public.
The current globalized economy is able to produce diverse
commodities and distribute these across vast distances. However,
the workforce which underpins these networks experiences vast
inequalities in income and working conditions. As an academic
field, global labour studies seeks to understand how different
forms of employment sustain uneven patterns of consumption at a
global scale, and how the inequalities in working conditions are
created and maintained. This lively and accessible book explores
these structures and forces that shape lives across the world.
Maintaining a consistent focus on questions of power, networks,
space and livelihoods, this book opens up key issues and concepts
such as global production networks, changing labour market
dynamics, forced labour, contemporary migration trends and new
labour organizations. This approach provides an integrated
framework to further analyse the social contexts of work on a
global scale. With suggested readings at the end of each chapter,
Global Labour Studies is an essential text for undergraduate
courses on global labour issues in the fields of geography,
politics, sociology, labour studies and international development.
This thought-provoking monograph analyzes the longstanding
political and economic structures underlying entrenched health
inequities in rural areas worldwide. Bypassing familiar data on the
subject, it critiques existing approaches to why core social
determinants of health are underrepresented in rural communities,
and synthesizes knowledge from health behaviors to spatial politics
to make creative, equitable suggestions for intervention. The
author reviews classic economic and current sociopolitical theory
to pinpoint governments' decision-making processes behind resource
allocation as they translate into poor service access, service
quality, and health outcomes. In reply, corrective policy measures
are recommended to address these conditions at the root-cause
level, in keeping with global goals of improved health for all.
Included in the coverage: * Rural health disparities: the political
economy. * Rural health disparities: the economic argument. *
Social disorganization in rural communities. * Rural health
disparities and social disorder: public policy responses. * The
political economy: an era of institutional cynicism? With its
forceful argument for dealing with a growing but often invisible
crisis, Application of the Political Economy to Rural Health
Disparities makes a significant text for graduate and undergraduate
programs in public and international affairs, planning and public
policy, public health, public administration, and economics. Public
health and advocacy organizations will also benefit from the book's
vision.
This book addresses the obesity epidemic from a political, economic
and social perspective. Examining the populations that suffer the
greatest from political and economic decision-making associated
with obesity prevalence, this book utilizes a contemporary
framework to discuss obesity. While it does examine the behavioral
risks associated with rising obesity rates, it also explores the
political level, by evaluating theories in social justice and the
political economy that foster or restrict at-risk behaviors. It
considers the economic context through rising income inequality
levels in the US. It also critiques the actions of higher
institutions, including transnational corporations, as social
contributors to this epidemic. Finally, it compares global and
national challenges of the epidemic.
