Henri Bergson (1859-1941) is one of the truly great philosophers of
the modernist period, and there is currently a major renaissance of
interest in his unduly neglected texts and ideas amongst
philosophers, literary theorists, and social theorists.
"Creative Evolution" (1907) is the text that made Bergson
world-famous in his own lifetime; in it Bergson responds to the
challenge presented to our habits of thought by modern evolutionary
theory, and attempts to show that the theory of knowledge must have
its basis in a theory of life.
Psychiatry and Empire brings together scholars in the History of
Medicine and Colonialism to explore questions of race, gender and
power relations in former colonial states across Africa, Asia, the
Caribbean and the Pacific. Focusing on the intellectual histories
of concepts of mental illness, mental healing and strategies of
coping and resistance, this volume advances our understanding of
the rise of modern psychiatry as it collided with, and sometimes
underpinned, the psychology of colonial rule.
Great statesmen and gentlemen, men of honor and rank, seem to be
phenomena of a bygone Aristocratic era. Aristocracies, which
emphasize rank, and value difference, quality, beauty, rootedness,
continuity, stand in direct contrast to democracies, which value
equality, autonomy, novelty, standardization, quantity, utility and
mobility. Is there any place for aristocratic values and virtues in
the modern democratic social and political order? This volume
consists of essays by political theorists, historians, and literary
theorists that explore this question in the works of aristocratic
thinkers, both ancient and modern. The volume includes analyses of
aristocratic virtues, interpretations of aristocratic assemblies
and constitutions, both historic and contemporary, as well as
critiques of liberal virtues and institutions. Essays on Tacitus,
Hobbes, Burke, Tocqueville, Nietzsche, as well as some lesser known
figures, such as Henri de Boulainvilliers, John Randolph of
Roanoke, Louis de Bonald, Konstantin Leontiev, Jose Ortega y
Gasset, Richard Weaver, and the Eighth Duke of Northumberland,
explore ways of preserving and adapting the salutary aspects of the
aristocratic ethos to the needs of modern liberal societies.
Did Hobbes's political philosophy have practical intentions? There
exists no "Hobbist" school of thought; no new political order was
inspired by Hobbesian precepts. Yet in Behemoth Teaches Leviathan
Geoffrey M. Vaughan revisits Behemoth to reveal hitherto unexplored
pedagogic purpose to Hobbes's political philosophy. The work
demonstrates Hobbes's firm commitment to government and his
attempts to create a system of political education to underpin his
commitment to sovereignty. Vaughan explore Hobbes's political
education in detail and in an epilogue considers the resurgence of
political education in contemporary liberal theory. He discovers
that contemporary political education has far more in common with
Hobbes's system than it does with early liberalism.

Beginning with the development of the nuclear bomb in 1945, the US
has maintained a leadership role in nuclear weapons design.
However, since the end of the Cold War, the nuclear weapons complex
(NWC) (created to design, manufacture, maintain, test and
ultimately dismantle nuclear weapons and their components) has
consolidated and been insufficiently maintained. The Undersecretary
of Defense for Policy, Douglas Feith, summarized the NWC status in
Congressional testimony, "For example, the United States today is
the only nuclear weapons state that cannot remanufacture
replacements or produce new nuclear weapons." The US must reverse
this trend.

Louis Vaughan migrated from Barbados to the United States as a
teenager and earned a Bachelor's Degree from Brooklyn College and a
Master's Degree from Central Michigan University. He spent
twenty-five years in the U.S. Air Force before retiring as a
Lieutenant Colonel in 1987 and has since worked as a counselor for
the Commonwealth of Virginia and as the Director of Human Resources
for the Virginia Commonwealth University. He lives with his wife,
Linda, in Fredericksburg, Virginia and has two children and five
grandchildren.
More than six decades after Hiroshima and almost two since the end
of the Cold War, the US nuclear weapons stockpile is undergoing an
extensive and expensive life-extension program to ensure the
continued safety, security, and reliability of the legacy weapons
well into the future. The current stockpile does not meet post-Cold
War national security challenges. Today's challenge is to sustain
and modernize the US nuclear weapons infrastructure with minimal
risk and cost. Lt Col Ed Vaughan advocates that to mitigate the
risks and address the highly uncertain future security environment,
the recapitalization of US nuclear weapons should begin
immediately.
