Biotechnology: Quality Assurance and Validation provides a
practical, detailed discussion of what issues Quality Assurance and
Quality Control need to identify for effective control in the
preparation of biotechnology products. The book presents a series
of topics that define some of the unique challenges facing
biotechnology companies in producing biopharmaceutical products.
The topics selected address quality and validation issues, starting
with the cryopreservation of cell lines through the filling and
finishing of the product. It includes a validation guide, a clear
presentation of how to use filtration effectively, a synoptic view
of cleaning procedures, and much more.
Many modern Christians are now agreeing that we should take Jesus'
command to cast out demons more seriously than we have in recent
years. But how do we do it? Where do we start? This practical,
down-to-earth book shows us how. From Doris Wagner, one of the
leading authorities on biblical deliverance in North America, this
manual teaches Christians how to take and break soul ties; how to
break bondages of rejection, addiction, lust, and more; and how to
set free those whom the enemy has held captive.
At the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and
Development, popularly known as the Rio Earth Summit, the world's
leaders constructed a new "sustainable development" paradigm that
promised to enhance environmentally sound economic and social
development. Twenty years later, the proliferation of multilateral
environmental agreements points to an unprecedented achievement,
but is worth examining for its accomplishments and shortcomings.
This book provides a review of twenty years of multilateral
environmental negotiations (1992-2012). The authors have
participated in most of these negotiating processes and use their
first-hand knowledge as writers for the International Institute for
Sustainable Development's Earth Negotiations Bulletin as they
illustrate the changes that have taken place over the past twenty
years. The chapters examine the proliferation of meetings, the
changes in the actors and their roles (governments, nongovernmental
organizations, secretariats), the interlinkages of issues, the
impact of scientific advice, and the challenges of implementation
across negotiating processes, including the Framework Convention on
Climate Change, the Convention to Combat Desertification, the
Convention on Biological Diversity, the Commission on Sustainable
Development, the UN Forum on Forests, the chemicals conventions
(Stockholm, Basel and Rotterdam), the Montreal Protocol on
Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer, the Convention on
International Trade in Endangered Species, the Convention on
Migratory Species and the International Treaty on Plant Genetic
Resources for Food and Agriculture.
This book covers the principles of cryopreservation as they relate
the preservation of viable cells and cell materials being developed
for biopharmaceutical applications. Topics include: the principles
of freezing and thawing cells, physiochemical phenomena, process
and system design options, method selection considerations,
preservation procedures, cryoprotectant additives, freeze-drying
human live virus vaccines, and transport system selection criteria.
Contributions from well-known experts such as Steven S. Lee, Thomas
C. Pringle, William H. Siegel, Richard Wisniewski, and Fangdong Yin
make this the single most important study available.
Environmental sustainability is increasingly important to
organisations, whether for regulatory, financial or ethical
reasons. Business and Environmental Sustainability looks at the
environmental aspect of sustainability for all organisations
pursuing competitive advantage. The book provides theoretical
foundations from science, economics, policy and strategy,
introduces three environmental challenges (climate change,
pollution and waste) and looks at how corporate functions can
address these. This textbook provides a thorough foundation by
introducing readers to the science, reasoning and theory behind
environmental sustainability and then delves into how these ideas
translate into principles and business models for organisations to
use. Next, it covers environmental challenges from climate change,
pollution and waste, and then goes on to examine the different
corporate functions (from supply chain management to human
resources) to illustrate how environmental sustainability is
managed and put into practice in organisations. Finally, a set of
integrative case studies draws everything together and enables the
reader to apply various analytical tools, with the aim of
understanding how companies can not only reduce their environmental
footprint but can positively contribute to environmental
sustainability. Written by an award-winning lecturer, Business and
Environmental Sustainability boasts a wealth of pedagogical
features, including examples from a range of industries and
countries, plus a companion website with slides, quiz questions and
instructor material. This will be a valuable text for students of
business, management and environmental sustainability and will also
be suitable for broader courses on corporate responsibility and
sustainability across environmental studies, political science and
engineering.
The study of cooperative phenomena is one of the dominant features
of contem porary physics. Outside physics it has grown to a huge
field of interdisciplinary investigation, involving all the natural
sciences from physics via biology to socio logy. Yet, during the
first few decades following the advent of quantum theory, the
pursuit of the single particle or the single atom, as the case may
be, has been so fascinating that only a small number of physicists
have stressed the importance of collective behaviour. One
outstanding personality among these few is Professor HERBERT
FROHLICH. He has made an enormous contribution to the modern
concept of cooperativity and has stimulated a whole generation of
physicists. Therefore, it seemed to the editors very appropriate to
dedicate a volume on "cooperative phenomena" to him on the occasion
of his official retirement from his university duties.
Nevertheless, in the course of carrying out this project, the
editors have been somewhat amazed to find that they have covered
the essentials of contemporary physics and its im pact on other
scientific disciplines. It thus becomes clear how much HERBERT
FROHLICH has inspired research workers and has acted as a
stimulating discussion partner for others. FROHLICH is one of those
exceptional scientists who have wor ked in quite different fields
and given them an enormous impetus. Unfortunately, the number of
scientists of such distinctive personality has been decreasing in
our century."

This textbook provides an introduction to dynamic modeling in cell
biology, emphasizing computational approaches based on realistic
molecular mechanisms. It is designed to introduce cell biology and
neuroscience students to computational modeling, and applied
mathematics students, theoretical biologists, and engineers to many
of the problems in dynamical cell biology. This volume was
conceived of and begun by Professor Joel Keizer based on his many
years of teaching and research together with his colleagues. The
project was expanded and finished by his students and friends after
his untimely death in 1999. Carefully selected examples are used to
motivate the concepts and techniques of computational cell biology,
through a progression of increasingly more complex and demanding
cases. Illustrative exercises are included with every chapter, and
mathematical and computational appendices are provided for
reference. This textbook will be useful for advanced undergraduate
and graduate theoretical biologists, and for mathematics students
and life scientists who wish to learn about modeling in cell
biology. Royalties from this book will be donated to the Joel E.
Keizer memorial endowment for collaborative interdisciplinary
research in the life sciences.
Globalization and unemployment are two phenomena which are amongst
the most widely discussed subjects in the economic debate today.
Often, globalization is regarded as being responsible for the
increase in unemployment, particularly in unskilled labor. This
book deals with the correlation between globalization and
unemployment under various aspects: historical aspects of
globalization, empirical trends and theoretical explanations of
unemployment, effects of globalization in general and of European
Monetary Union in particular on umemployment, labor market policy
in a global economy, the impact of fiscal policy on unemployment in
a global economy, as well as the effects of globalization on
inflation and national stabilization policy.

Does the Internet fundamentally change the flow of politically
relevant information, even in authoritarian regimes? If so, does it
alter the attitudes and behavior of citizens? While there is a fair
amount of research exploring how social media has empowered social
actors to challenge authoritarian regimes, there is much less
addressing whether and how the state can actively shape the flow of
information to its advantage. In China, for instance, citizens
often resort to "rightful resistance" to lodge complaints and
defend rights. By using the rhetoric of the central government,
powerless citizens may exploit the slim political opportunity
structure and negotiate with the state for better governance. But
this tactic also reinforces the legitimacy of authoritarian states;
citizens engage rightful resistance precisely because they trust
the state, at least the central government, to some degree. Drawing
on original survey data and rich qualitative sources, Directed
Digital Dissidence in Autocracies explores how authoritarian
regimes employ the Internet in advantageous ways to direct the flow
of online information. The authors argue that the central Chinese
government successfully directs citizen dissent toward local
government through critical information that the central government
places online—a strategy that the authors call "directed digital
dissidence". In this context, citizens engage in low-level protest
toward the local government, and thereby feel empowered, while the
central government avoids overthrow. Consequently, the Internet
functions to discipline local state agents and to project a
benevolent image of the central government and the regime as a
whole. With an in-depth look at the COVID-19 and Xinjiang Cotton
cases, the authors demonstrate how the Chinese state employs
directed digital dissidence and discuss the impact and limitations
of China's information strategy.

Liberalism at the Crossroads offers succinct, accessible, and
well-written surveys of the ideas of the leading participants in
the contemporary philosophical debate about liberalism. Christopher
Wolfe brings together analyses of leading liberal thinkers from
across the spectrum as well as influential critics of liberalism,
including John Rawls, Ronald Dworkin, Robert Nozick, Michael
Sandel, Richard Rorty, Joseph Raz, and William Galston. For the
second edition, each chapter has been thoroughly revised, and new
chapters on Susan Moller Okin, Richard Posner, and John Finnis have
been added to include representatives of liberal feminism, law and
economics, and natural law. The result is an invaluable overview of
contemporary political theory, ideal for both students and
scholars.

Univ. Prof. Dr. M. Wagner
Vorstand der unfalIchir. Abteilung der Landeskrankenanstalten,
Salzburg Danksagung Herrn Prof. Dr. Emanuel Trojan (Vorstand der I.

kausalen Be- handlung zufUhren.
strebenden Menschen unserer Zeit.
in allen diagnostisehen MaBnahmen.
dankbar.
