An extensive survey was carried out for isolation of plant
parasitic nematodes associated with date-palm of Lasbela district,
Balochistan, Pakistan. Lasbela was notified as a district in 1954
with Uthal as its headquarters. The district is situated on the
southern coast of Balochistan between 24 53 to 25 42 North
latitudes and 65 15 and 67 27 East longitudes. The date-palm trees
in the district were infested by a number of pathogens including
nematodes which eventually reduce its yield. A total of six
nematode species were recorded. For control poultry manure and
oil-cakes were evaluated for their nematicidal potential. This
information is useful for parasitology, students, teachers and
researchers working in this field.
The bionomical study is important for the successful management and
conservation of a natural population. The research carried out the
significant relationship among different body length parameters and
seasonal growth curves to asses the growth variation of the
population of Notopterus notopterus. The species showed female
dominating distribution including homogeneity in yearly
distribution. The condition factors showed variation in growth
patterns indicating gradual development of gonad in relation to the
sexual cycle. The fish is carnivore and feeds on a large variety of
food items. The gonads are found unpaired having short ducts which
originate from the left abdominal cavity beside the alimentary
canal and bellow the kidney. The breeding period extend from May to
September. The fish is able to breed naturally, even in stagnant
water of carp polyculture system. The sandy-loam soil of the pond,
submerged vegetation and suitable water quality enhanced the
breeding process of the fish. The findings of the work will play
vital role in production and conservation of the species.
