Diabetes mellitus is a major public health problem affecting over
415 million people in the world. Extensive research over the
decades and the recent discovery of new medicines have
revolutionized our understanding and treatment of both type 2
diabetes and type 1 diabetes mellitus. This book contains selected
topics that describe recent advances in research, and state of the
art treatment of the two types of diabetes mellitus and their
complications. The topics encompass epidemiology and pathogenesis
of diabetes, clinical features, diagnosis and treatment of diabetes
and related complications. The chapters contain essential
background materials, as well as recent advances in researches in
different aspects of diabetes mellitus. The books is expected to be
useful for researchers, research students, as well as for the
clinicians engaged in diabetes care and diabetes research.
When new fellows join my lab, I give them some reading materials so
that they can orient themselves in their assignment in a new eld.
When fellows leave my lab, some after writing their dissertations,
I prefer to give them a book as a symbolic present. I was longing
for a book that contained something on more or less eve- thing
about the islets. At the same time, I wished it contained
information as recent as possible. There are a few such books in
the market but they are pretty outdated. I started picking islets
myself from October 1990, when I joined the Rolf Luft Center,
Karolinska Institutet. Over the years my fascination for islet
research remained high. Since last year, I felt a stronger urge to
do more for these mysterious and hidden mini-organs that are
directly or indirectly involved in the pathogenesis of all forms of
diabetes that affects ?250 million people in the world. After I
launched the Islet (landesbioscience. com/journals/islets) and
founded the Islet Society (isletso- ety. org), there was a momentum
that could be utilized to create something equally meaningful i. e.
this book. The idea cracked in September 2008. Starting September
19, 2008, I contacted an estimated 90% of the authors who published
anything on the islets during 2007-2008 and who could be traced
from the internet.
"Heart Failure: From Research to Clinical Practice" contains
chapters that describe the current views on the biological
mechanisms, clinical assessment, diagnosis and evidence-based
treatments of the condition. Topics in this volume range from basic
research at cell and molecular level to patient care in everyday
clinical practice and provide essential background information and
analyses of recent advances for a deeper understanding of the
issues involved. With contributions from international experts in
their specified fields and are suitable for both beginners and more
advanced readers. This volume includes not only the essential
information for clinical practice but also the latest information
from the contemporary guidelines and the recommendations from
leading societies. It also covers ongoing research and puts forward
new hypotheses that can be tested in future research. This
comprehensive volume will provide a valuable resource for both
research students and expert clinicians.
Hypertension: from basic research to clinical practice" contains a
unique collection of selected chapters written by experts and
enthusiasts engaged in research and treatment of hypertension, a
condition that affects around a billion people in the world. The
chapters describe fundamental researches at cellular and molecular
levels to the science, and art of treatment of the condition in
clinical practice. The topics included ranges from pathophysiology
of hypertension, through monitoring of hypertension, to the
treatment of hypertension in different patient categories. It
contains essential background information as well as cutting edge
research, and state of the art treatment alternatives in this broad
field. From the beginners, and research students to the expert
clinicians, and established scientists, everybody has something to
learn from this book.

Transient Receptor Potential Channels offers a unique blend of
thoughtfully selected topics ranging from the structural biology of
this fascinating group of ion channels to their emerging roles in
human diseases. This single book covers TRP channels of yeasts,
flies, fishes frogs and humans. And from the biophysics of primary
thermo-sensory events in cells to the thermosensation at whole
organism level, from physiology of pain to the development of
pain-killers, from psychiatric illnesses to cancers, from skin
cells to sperms, from taste buds to testes, from established facts
to heated debates, this book contains something for every TRP
enthusiasts, beginner and expert alike. It includes crucial
background information, critical analysis of cutting edge research,
and ideas and thoughts for numerous testable hypotheses. It also
shows directions for future research in this highly dynamic field.
It is a book readers will be just as eager to give to others as
keep for themselves.
This unique publication explores diverse themes relating to
thrombosis and embolism, from basic research at cell and molecular
level to the actual care, prevention, and treatment of diverse
categories of patients suffering from such diseases. Chapters cover
a variety of topics including thrombosis and embolism in surgical
patients, cancer patients, pregnant women and children and
adolescents, as well as treatment of the conditions by traditional
anticoagulants, novel oral anticoagulants, thrombolytic therapy,
endovascular treatment and embolectomy. Readers may explore cutting
edge research, recommendations from major societies, contemporary
guidelines, areas of controversy and directions for ongoing and
future research. The book features comprehensive information
ranging from molecular mechanisms of diseases to the clinical
features, diagnosis, and therapeutic regimens for treating a
variety of clinical conditions. It has a broad appeal to scientists
