Practice Theory and Research - Exploring the dynamics of social life (Hardcover): Gert Spaargaren, Don Weenink, Machiel Lamers Practice Theory and Research - Exploring the dynamics of social life (Hardcover)
Gert Spaargaren, Don Weenink, Machiel Lamers
R4,448 Discovery Miles 44 480 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

There has been an upsurge in scholarship concerned with theories of social practices in various fields including sociology, geography and management studies. This book provides a systematic introduction and overview of recent formulations of practice theory organised around three important themes: the importance of analysing the role of the non-human alongside the human; the reflexive nature of social science research; and the dynamics of social change. Combining a rich variety of detailed empirical research examples with discussion of the relevance of practice theories for policy and social change, this book represents an excellent sourcebook for all academic and professional researchers interested in working with practice theory.

Antarctic Futures - Human Engagement with the Antarctic Environment (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed.... Antarctic Futures - Human Engagement with the Antarctic Environment (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2014)
Tina Tin, Daniela Liggett, Patrick T Maher, Machiel Lamers
R4,078 Discovery Miles 40 780 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

At the beginning of the 21st century, Antarctica is poised at the edge of a warmer and busier world. Leading Antarctic researchers examine the needs and challenges of Antarctic environmental management today and tomorrow. Through: (i) investigating the impacts of human activities on specific ecosystems and species, (ii) examining existing environmental management and monitoring practices in place in various regions and (iii) interrogating stakeholders, they address the following questions: What future will Business-As-Usual bring to the Antarctic environment? Will a Business-As-Usual future be compatible with the objectives set out under the Antarctic Treaty, especially its Protocol on Environmental Protection? What actions are necessary to bring about alternative futures for the next 50 years? This volume is an outcome of the International Polar Year (2007-2009) Oslo Science Conference (8-12, June, 2010).

Institutional Arrangements for Conservation, Development and Tourism in Eastern and Southern Africa - A Dynamic Perspective... Institutional Arrangements for Conservation, Development and Tourism in Eastern and Southern Africa - A Dynamic Perspective (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2015)
Rene Van Der Duim, Machiel Lamers, Jakomijn van Wijk
R3,793 Discovery Miles 37 930 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book presents an overview of different institutional arrangements for tourism, biodiversity conservation and rural poverty reduction in eastern and southern Africa. These approaches range from conservancies in Namibia, community-based organizations in Botswana, conservation enterprises in Kenya, private game reserves in South Africa, to sport hunting in Uganda and transfrontier conservation areas. The book presents a comparative analysis of these arrangements and highlights that most arrangements emerged in the 1990s through either a decentralized or centralized change trajectory that was sponsored by donors. They aim to address some of the challenges of the 'fortress' types of conservation by combining principles of community-based natural resource management with a neoliberal approach to conservation, evident in the use of tourism as the main mechanism for accruing benefits from wildlife. The book illustrates the empirical relevance of these novel arrangements by presenting their growth in numbers and discuss how these arrangements differ in their form. With respect to the conservation and development impacts of these arrangements, we show that they have secured large amounts of land for conservation, but also generated governance challenges and disputes on tourism benefit sharing, affecting the stability of these arrangements to generate socioeconomic and conservation benefits.
