"Mark Twain's Date . . 1601 - Conversation, as it was by the Social Fireside in the Time of the Tudors" is a ribald satire written by the American humorist Mark Twain in 1876. Considered in its time near pornographic for it's vulgar comedy, it was privately printed for many years. Versions of the text were circulated long before the landmark obscenity cases of the late 50's and early to mid 60's allowed widespread publication of previously unprintable books. This version, though undated, is thought to have been originally published in the mid 1930's, and features artwork from Mahlon Blaine.

Acknowledged as one of Mahlon Blaine's masterworks, Nova Venus is reprinted here in it's entirety for the first time since it's original publication.

Inspired by medieval beliefs in the occult properties of the mandrake root (alraune), which was thought to grow under gallows from the fallen semen of hanged men, an arrogant student, Frank Braun, persuades his vicious uncle, Jacob ten Brinken, to create a child through artificial insemination using sperm from a condemned man and a prostitute as the mother. The child, Alraune, grows into an extremely beautiful but thoroughly perverse young woman with a mysterious power to subject others and to bring riches and ruination. Alraune was first published in German in 1911. This Birchgrove Press edition is based on an English translation published by The John Day Company, New York, in 1929 that was illustrated by Mahlon Blaine.
