Mahmoud Eid
R5,377 Discovery Miles 53 770 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Terroredia is a newly coined term by the editor, Dr. Mahmoud Eid, to explain the phenomenal, yet under-researched relationship between terrorists and media professionals in which acts of terrorism and media coverage are exchanged, influenced, and fueled by one another. Exchanging Terrorism Oxygen for Media Airwaves: The Age of Terroredia provides a timely and thorough discussion on a wide range of issues surrounding terrorism in relation to both traditional and new media. Comprised of insights and research from leading experts in the fields of terrorism and media studies, this publication presents various topics relating to Terroredia: understanding of terrorism and the role of the media, terrorism manifestations and media representations of terrorism, types of terrorism and media stereotypes of terrorism, terrorism tactics and media strategies, the war on terrorism, the function of terrorism and the employment of the media, new terrorism and new media, contemporary cases of terrorist-media interactions, the rationality behind terrorism and counterterrorism, as well as the responsibility of the media. This publication is of interest to government officials, media professionals, researchers, and upper-level students interested in learning more about the complex relationship between terrorism and the media.

Focusing on the Iranian presidential elections of 2009 and ensuing demonstrations in major cities across Iran and world, Media, Power, and Politics in the Digital Age provides a balanced discussion of the role and impact of modern communication technologies, particularly the novel utilization of "small digital media" vis-a-vis the elections and global media coverage. Written in a non-technical, easy to read, and accessible manner, the volume will appeal to scholars, students, policy makers and print professionals alike. To provide a global overview of media coverage and diverse perspectives on the controversial 2009 presidential election, this book consists of 24 original essays, covering issues from global media coverage to new media-social networking, from the ideological-political dimensions to the cultural facets of the elections. Organized in a cohesive manner, the writing styles and presentation remain varied and richly informative.

Mission Invisible - Race, Religion, and News at the Dawn of the 9/11 Era (Hardcover): Ross Perigoe, Mahmoud Eid Mission Invisible - Race, Religion, and News at the Dawn of the 9/11 Era (Hardcover)
Ross Perigoe, Mahmoud Eid

The attacks of 9/11 created a philosophical and cultural shockwave
felt around the world. For many Canadians, 9/11 also produced feelings
of insecurity, vulnerability, and suspicion of "Arabs" in
general. Being Muslim was often seen as being Arab, and diverse Muslim
communities were glossed over as if they were invisible. How did these
negative attitudes come about?

Many point to the role of the news media in framing and
contextualizing events and its complicity in reproducing racist images
of Muslim minorities. Strikingly lacking from media analyses,
however, is a focus on the most significant stage of reportage:
the initial weeks in which the events, surrounding issues, and primary
actors of 9/11 were all first framed by journalists. The authors
of "Mission Invisible" chronicle varying racialized
constructions of Muslim communities in the news during these initial
weeks. Through detailed examination of the
naturalized underrepresentation and misrepresentation of Muslim
communities, they map the production of racist ideology in the news,
parsing textual productions to locate complex patterns of rhetorical
devices, dramatic structure, and discursive themes.

In showing how media coverage of Muslim communities was imagined,
negotiated, and represented after 9/11, "Mission Invisible"
provides much-needed empirical evidence of how racist discourses are
constructed and reinforced by the media in a unique Canadian setting
where linguistic and cultural communities are often in contention.

Ross Perigoe was an associate professor of
journalism at Concordia University. Mahmoud Eid is an
associate professor of communication at the University of Ottawa.
