"Herbartism in Austrian-Hungarian philosophy" is often an
obligatory reference, but even if quoting Herbart and his school is
frequent, reading them attentively is less evident. Because
Herbartism reached its peak in the second half of the 19th century,
and was effectively institutionalized as "official philosophy" of
the Austro-Hungarian Empire, at least in Prague and Vienna,
criticizing Herbartism often means discussing the "Austrian",
"philosophical" and "institutional" criteria of the object under
consideration. As the history of the Austrian tradition and
theoretical reflections in this field expand, discussion of this
tradition is becoming more and more tight and precise. The
contributors in this volume recall the historical and conceptual
importance of Herbartism in the field of Austrian philosophy, by
addressing several aspects of his specific realism: philosophical,
theoretical, pedagogical, psychological, and aesthetical.
"[Dr. Maigne's] neuoranatomical explanations are brilliantly
illustrated and documented with a profound review of the
literature. ...The benefit he has given patients who have come from
all over the world for his services affirms the benefit of his
method." From the First Edition foreword by, -Rene Cailliet, M.D.
Professor Emeritus, School of Medicine of the University of
Southern California Over the course of fifty years, Dr. Robert
Maigne has built up an international reputation for his pioneering
work with spinal-related pain. His assessment and therapeutic
techniques, once considered revolutionary, are now widely accepted
as standard approaches. In Diagnosis and Treatment of Pain of
Vertebral Origin, Second Edition, Dr. Maigne presents a
comprehensive and highly insightful review of both fundamental and
advanced research literature, exploring the anatomic,
developmental, and pathological conditions known to produce pain.
Including extensive sections on assessment and therapy, he offers a
complete training in the principles and techniques of manipulation
for which he is known. He also offers fresh approaches to the
problem of manual medicine in the fragile areas of the spine, as
well as commentary on several other issues including failed back
syndrome. Dr. Maigne's devotion to inquiry and resistance to
assumption, makes this text a valuable reading for every clinician.
The knowledge he imparts with regard to the mechanics and treatment
of pain will benefit any practice.
