Australia's favourite newsreader is back with words of wisdom to inspire and entertain. This book of quotations is Mal Walden's third book from Brolga Publishing and designed to be as accessible as a close friend. Dip into it anytime for support, guidance and a good belly laugh. Mal gives us quotes and anecdotes from the greats and the not-so-greats: spiritual leaders, world leaders, scientists, humorists, business people, athletes, song-writers and artists. Read this and you'll never, as Mike Tyson feared, `...fade into Bolivian...'.
"If it bleeds - it leads!" This has been the catch-cry of newsrooms across the world when making decisions on what to present as the daily news ... however, Mal Walden, much loved Melbourne newsreader who was involved with journalism and the media for over 60 years, prefers to present this collection of Good News: stories of survival, invention, eccentricity and goodness. Good news not only sells but studies have shown it is beneficial to our mental well-being! These feel-good stories highlight the ingenuity of people, the kindness and compassion we can show to each other, the determination to overcome hardship and the fun people can have in their daily life.
Australia's favourite newsman is back. This time he brings his journalist's eye to bear on stories of mythical monsters, UFOs, paranormal events and unsolved mysteries from Australian folklore. Mal Walden takes us on a journey through Australian history to discover Melbourne's hidden underground tunnels, buried treasure hidden by bushrangers in the outback, pirates and bank robbers and many other weird and unexplained mysteries.
Australia's favourite newsman is back. This time with legends and icons - stories, people and products which are uniquely Australian - from a tradition of bush medicines to amazing world first medical discoveries. Mal Walden takes us on a journey through Australian history to revive and pay tribute to those whose legacies have helped shape the emerging nation. Serendipity is a happy and unexpected event and as Walden shows, often a search for one thing led to amazing accidental Australian inventions.
'You'll never be a journalist's bootlace!' During his cadetship in the early '60s, Mal Walden heard these words frequently from his news editor and media mentor, John Maher. Walden not only proved his mentor wrong, he went on to become the longest-serving newsman on Australian television. From a career starting in country Victoria radio, Walden went on to work in Launceston and Melbourne, and then finally made the shift to television as news anchor for channels 7 and 10. Each year he maintained a journal in which he recorded his many serendipitous and life-changing moments. These memories form a record - not only of his life as a newsman - but of the evolution of television news, which is now in its sixtieth year and facing what many proclaim is the imminent 'death of news' in all its traditional forms. This is the story behind the stories we think we know. A very personal look at the public face of news by one of the most well-loved and respected news presenters of our time.
