The Frontiers of Europe (Hardcover): Malcolm Anderson, Eberhard Bort The Frontiers of Europe (Hardcover)
Malcolm Anderson, Eberhard Bort
R6,013 Discovery Miles 60 130 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Difficult questions concerning the internal and external frontiers of the EU have emerged since the changes in the European political landscape after 1989. Dismantling controls at the frontiers between member states envisaged by the Single European Act and 'Europe 1992' has encountered difficulties and complications. An increase in the geographical extent of the Union, with the inclusion of Austria, Finland and Sweden, and the possible location of the external frontier further to the East have added to uncertainties about the future direction of the EU. Managing the external frontier has become increasingly complex.

This volume analyses the cultural, political and legal consequences of dismantling controls at the internal frontiers and of measures to harden the external frontier. Among the central issues considered are the progress towards a European identity and changes in political identities within the EU, the extent to which the internal frontiers have become different in kind from the external frontiers, and the varying ways in which frontier issues are posed in different parts of the Union. These issues will profoundly influence the development of the European polity.

Conservative Politics in France: Malcolm Anderson Conservative Politics in France
Malcolm Anderson
R3,983 Discovery Miles 39 830 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

First published in 1974 Conservative Politics in France gives a scholarly account of politics in France from 1880 to the present and explains the way in which the Right has evolved from a collection of weak and transitory political associations to the relatively well – organised Gaullist coalition. Exciting patterns of interaction between personal careers, political events, and party organisation have characterised this period. War and colonial conflict have brought an end not only to regimes but also to political parties. The lingering influences of an aristocracy and bourgeoisie de tradition, and the survival of a large peasantry and local social systems preserved peculiar styles of politics. The first great wave of party building at the beginning of the twentieth century produced organisations ranging from the doctrinaire anti-parliamentary league to the loose electoral association. The Fourth Republic saw another wave of party building but only since 1958 has a party emerged which can attract most of the moderate and conservative electorate. No other book has attempted to cover this historical period and to give detail accounts of local as well as national political structures. This is an interesting read for scholars and researchers of French political history, French politics, and European politics.

Police and Justice Co-operation and the New European Borders (Hardcover): Malcolm Anderson Police and Justice Co-operation and the New European Borders (Hardcover)
Malcolm Anderson; Joanna Apap
R6,021 Discovery Miles 60 210 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

When we consider the ideal of the `family' of nations implied by the European Union, it seems unnatural to deal with the question of where Europe's borders lie. Yet the question is urgently raised by grave issues of internal and external security. As the European Union's imminent eastward and southern expansion becomes reality -- side by side with the evolving new emphasis on security spawned by the events of September 11, 2001 -- we must be sure that the Schengen norms remain viable. It is also crucial to take full account of the impact of the enlarged European Union on the non-candidate countries of Eastern Europe. This important book takes the position that trust is the essential ingredient. Fourteen distinguished authors reveal various ways of achieving a level of trust among the members of the enlarged European Union adequate to the need for full freedom, security, and justice. The contexts in which trust must be established include police and judicial cooperation; the fight against terrorism, organized crime, and human trafficking: the latent threats to freedom of movement posed by national responses to increased immigration; and the transparent extension of EU Justice and Home Affairs measures to the candidate countries. The authors include political actors, policymakers, advisers, experts, and researchers from all parts of Europe. Their individual and collective contributions, in each case built solidly on thorough analysis of the relevant issues, bring a wide range of profound and wide-reaching insights to a vital subject. The book is of great significance not only for those charged with law enforcement and security, but also to all academics and policymakers concerned with the future of Europe.

Peter Andreas, Timothy Snyder; Contributions by Maria-Elena Alcaraz, Malcolm Anderson, Peter Andreas, …
R1,164 Discovery Miles 11 640 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Even as economic and military walls have come down in the post-Cold War era, states have rapidly built new barriers to prevent a perceived invasion of 'undesirables.' Nowhere is this more dramatically evident than along the geographic fault lines dividing rich from poor countries: especially the southern border of the United States, and the southern and eastern borders of the European Union. This volume examines the practice, politics, and consequences of building these new walls in North America and Europe. At the same time, it challenges dominant accounts of globalization, in which state borders will be irrelevant to the human experience. In short, the volume brings borders back in to the study of international politics.

The Priesthood of Industry - The Rise of the Professional Accountant in British Management (Hardcover, New): Derek Matthews,... The Priesthood of Industry - The Rise of the Professional Accountant in British Management (Hardcover, New)
Derek Matthews, Malcolm Anderson, John Richard Edwards
R7,411 Discovery Miles 74 110 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The leading professional accounting bodies in Britain today boast more than a quarter of a million qualified members and accountants are moving into top management positions in increasing numbers. Accountants have become the foremost professional grouping in British business management. The Priesthood of Industry documents the rise of the accountancy profession, from the handful of accountants listed in the trade directories of the major cities in the late-eighteenth century to the huge commercially-oriented firms of the late-twentieth century. The authors focus on the individual: the professional accountant, and adopt an economic determinist analysis to explain the rise of public practice and the transfer of staff to industry in increasing numbers. They also consider the routes through which this transfer of skills took place, and identify demand and supply side factors to explain the professional accountant's present hegemony in business management.

Borders and Border Politics in a Globalizing World (Paperback, New): David E. Lorey Borders and Border Politics in a Globalizing World (Paperback, New)
David E. Lorey; Contributions by Malcolm Anderson, Frederick Baker, Kirk S. Bowman, Richard W. Butler, …
R1,337 Discovery Miles 13 370 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Borders represent an intriguing paradox as globalization continues to leap barriers at a vigorous pace, merging economies and cultures through world trade, economic integration, the mass media, the Internet, and increasingly mobile populations. At the same time, the political boundaries separating peoples remain pervasive and problematic. Borders and Border Politics in a Globalizing World offers a carefully selected group of readings to enhance student understanding of the complexities of border regions. The reader brings together key writings on the histories of borders, their social development, their politics, and the daily life that characterizes them. The authors place their analyses of these issues in an international context, stressing how borders influence, and how they are influenced by, global processes. The selections provide a window on our current understanding of human interactions at and along national and interethnic boundaries, interactions that will characterize borders and border politics for decades to come. Drawing on a worldwide set of case studies, this text divides border issues into seven thematic categories: borders as barriers; borders, migrants, and refugees; borders and partitioned groups; borders, perceptions and culture; borders and the environment; borders, goods, and services; and maritime and space borders. An excellent text for courses on boundaries, ethnicity, and international relations, this collection of cutting-edge information and analysis on borders and border politics in the context of ongoing globalization will shed light both upon international and subnational boundaries and upon the unfolding processes of globalization.

Introduction to the Social Sciences (RLE Social Theory) - With Special Reference to their Methods (Paperback): Maurice Duverger Introduction to the Social Sciences (RLE Social Theory) - With Special Reference to their Methods (Paperback)
Maurice Duverger; Translated by Malcolm Anderson
R928 Discovery Miles 9 280 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Professor Duverger at last provides the student with an overall view of the methodology of the social sciences. He briefly traces the origin of the notion of a social science, showing how it emerged from social philosophy. Its essential elements and pre-conditions are described; the splintering of social science into specialist disciplines is explained, and the need for a general sociology confirmed. The techniques of observation used by social scientists are dealt with in some detail and the unity of the social sciences is illustrated by examples of the universal application of these techniques. Documentary evidence in its various forms are described along with the basic analytical techniques, including quantitative methods and content analysis. Other methods of gathering information through polls, interviews, attitude scales and participant observation are all described. Professor Duverger brings together the different kinds of analysis used to assess the information thus gathered. Arguing that observing and theorizing are not two different stages or levels of research, he examines the practical value and difficulties of general sociological theories, partial theories and models and working hypotheses. He both describes and assesses the limitations of experiment and the scope of comparative methods in the social sciences. He then gives elementary instructions for using and assessing the value of mathematical techniques. The possibilities of presenting social phenomena through graphs and charts are also explored. There are useful book lists and diagrams.

Trevor Boyns, Malcolm Anderson, J. Edwards
R1,396 Discovery Miles 13 960 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This anthology provides readers with a flavour of the development of cost accounting and emerging management accounting literature from 'The Costing Renaissance' to 1952. Many of the issues which were prominent in the middle of the twentieth century are still pressing issues today and received important early treatments. However, a more balanced longitudinal coverage of the relevant material enables readers to trace the development of new attitudes to problems which had been recognized early on and to become aware of the fact that different issues tended to dominate the literature as time went by. The selection bias has favoured material which was covered for the first time or in a new way.

Frontier Regions in Western Europe (Hardcover, annotated edition): Malcolm Anderson Frontier Regions in Western Europe (Hardcover, annotated edition)
Malcolm Anderson
R1,175 Discovery Miles 11 750 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

First published in 1983. The problem of defining a frontier region is a leitmotiv of this collection of articles but each perspective requires its own definition. The definition of regions has long been controversial and the attempt to define a sub-set of them - frontier regions - according to precise geographical or socio-economic criteria can be useful only for limited purposes as, for example, in the study of transfrontier labour markets. This text looks at the borders regions in Western Europe, in terms of transfrontier co-operation, geographical definitions, physical planning, economics and political authority.

In Thrall to Political Change is the first history of the French police and gendarmerie, for the period since the establishment of a democratic Republican regime in 1870 down to the present day. Based on archival material and on the vast amount of recent research by French scholars on the subject, it covers dramatic and often harrowing developments--anarchist and communist subversion, violent demonstrations and strikes, fascist threats, war and occupation, colonial conflicts and regime change--which have made policing in France troubled and controversial. As well as a chronological history, the book contains a thematic treatment of the police and the Republican regime (including the complex police-justice and police-military relations, the politics of police officials analyzing the charge of racism, politico-police scandals, and inequalities of policing), of major controversies (over political policing, municipal or central control of the police, and modernization), and of areas which pose problems for which there is no clear solution (use of force and police violence, police accountability, private security, and internationalization). In conclusion, the relations between the police and the public, and the place of the police in the political order are assessed.
In Thrall to Political Change is inter-disciplinary in approach using the academic literature in sociology, history, political science, criminal justice as well as the writings of police practitioners. The subject is placed in the context of international debates on policing, and the language used is free of jargon and the use, without explanation, of French terms. The bibliography and sources are a basic guide for further study of the subject.

International co-operation in criminal law enforcement has become a centrally important policy issue for Europe in the 1990s. In criminal matters, when a decision is taken to go beyond the discretionary exchange of information towards institutionalized police co-operation, a whole Pandora's box of issues and problems is opened. This book, based on interviews in a wide variety of documentary sources, examines the progress of this co-operation. The authors cover all the major and theoretical issues associated with the emerging pattern of co-operation, including the harmonization of criminal law and criminal procedure, law enforcement strategies, police organization and discipline, and the politics of immigration and civil liberties. In a European Union without internal border controls there is widespread agreement on the objective of closer police co-operation. But prospects in some areas are not good and there are potential pitfalls, even dangers, along the road to more integrated arrangements. The authors conclude by making recommendations that proper accountability arrangements are a prerequisite of a balanced and efficient system of European police co-operation.

Malcolm Anderson
R4,522 Discovery Miles 45 220 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The need for co-operation between the police forces of the world has never been greater: there is a huge growth in international drug-trafficking and terrorism, and many social and economic activities are becoming increasingly internationalized. Interpol is the oldest and best-known institution for tackling these problems - but is it right for today's conditions, or should it be supplanted by new arrangements? In this, the first scholarly study of Interpol, and of other contemporary forms of police co-operation across national boundaries, Malcolm Anderson discusses the proliferation of different forms of co-operation. He recognizes that contact between police forces of sovereign independent states has always been a sensitive matter and analyses uncertainty about how far police co-operation can go. He also examines the shadowy role of the security services and the influence of different forms of training on police attitudes. His book will be the indispensable starting-point for any future serious attempt to address these crucial issues of international policing. This book is intended for third year and postgraduate students of politics, international relations, police studies, the c
