This exciting addition to Dostoevsky studies deals with the religious dimension of the novelist's life and fiction. Malcolm Jones takes a fresh reading of Dostoevsky's representation of religion in his fictional world, that allows for both mystery and fear. The author argues that the spiritual map of human experience that Dostoevsky offers includes only the occasional small island of serenity in vast, turbulent oceans of doubt, rebellion, rejection, indifference and disbelief. Dostoevsky is also viewed as an artist, revealing glimpses of salvation through subversive narrative techniques and destabilized, vulnerable characters. Dostoevsky's fictional characters experience the dread of a meaningless void as well as a desperate longing for the restorative binding idea that religion offers. 'Dostoevsky and the Dynamics of Religious Experience' offers a balanced and authoritative argument. The book is structured through six clearly defined and self-reliant essays that take into account past and current criticism and offer a close textual analysis of Dostoevsky's works, including 'The Double', 'Notes from Underground', 'Crime and Punishment', 'The Idiot', 'The Devils' and an in-depth study of 'The Brothers Karamazov'. This work is a major contribution to the study of Dostoevsky and Russian Literature in Europe, the USA, Russia and throughout the world.

Notes from the Underground (1864) is one of the most profound works of nineteenth-century literature. A probing, speculative book, often regarded as a forerunner of the Existentialist movement, it examines the important political and philosophical questions that were current in Russia and Europe at the time. The Gambler (1866), set in the fictional town of Roulettenberg, explores the compulsive nature of gambling, one of the author's own vices and a subject he describes with extraordinary acumen and drama. Specially commissioned for the World's Classics, this new translation includes a full editorial apparatus. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

The Print in Early Modern England - An Historical Oversight (Hardcover): Malcolm Jones The Print in Early Modern England - An Historical Oversight (Hardcover)
Malcolm Jones
R1,526 Discovery Miles 15 260 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The print repertoire of the 16th and 17th centuries in England has been neglected historically, and this remarkable book rectifies a major oversight in the history of English visual art. It provides an iconographic survey of the single-sheet prints produced during the early modern era and brings to light significant recent discoveries from this visual storehouse. It publishes many works for the first time, as well as placing them and those relatively few others known to specialists in their cultural context. This large body of material is treated broadly thematically, and within each theme, chronologically. Portents and prodigies, the formal moralities and doctrines of Christianity, the sects of Christianity, visual satire of foreigners and "others," domestic political issues, social criticism and gender roles, marriage and sex, as well as numerical series and miscellaneous visual tricks, puzzles, and jokes, are all examined. The book concludes by considering the significance of this wealth of visual material for the cultural history of England in the early modern era. Published for the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art

Methods of Molecular Analysis in the Life Sciences (Hardcover): Andreas Hofmann Methods of Molecular Analysis in the Life Sciences (Hardcover)
Andreas Hofmann; Contributions by Anne Simon, Tanja Grkovic, Malcolm Jones
R3,561 Discovery Miles 35 610 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Delivering fundamental insights into the most popular methods of molecular analysis, this text is an invaluable resource for students and researchers. It encompasses an extensive range of spectroscopic and spectrometric techniques used for molecular analysis in the life sciences, especially in the elucidation of the structure and function of biological molecules. Covering the range of up-to-date methodologies from everyday mass spectrometry and centrifugation to the more probing X-ray crystallography and surface-sensitive techniques, the book is intended for undergraduates starting out in the laboratory and for more advanced postgraduates pursuing complex research goals. The comprehensive text provides strong emphasis on the background principles of each method, including equations where they are of integral importance to the individual techniques. With sections on all the major procedures for analysing biological molecules, this book will serve as a useful guide across a range of fields, from new drug discovery to forensics and environmental studies.

New Essays on Tolstoy (Paperback): Malcolm Jones New Essays on Tolstoy (Paperback)
Malcolm Jones
R1,265 Discovery Miles 12 650 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This collection of essays was first published in 1978. They commemorate the 150th anniversary of Tolstoy's birth in 1828. The range in subject matter is great and includes a reconsideration of the problems of translating Tolstoy into English, fresh approaches to his major fiction (War and Peace and Anna Karenina), a study of an underrated later work (Hadji Murat) and reassessments of Tolstoy as a thinker. The final essay records an attempt to establish a 'Tolstoyan' colony at Purleigh during Tolstoy's own lifetime. There is also a bibliographical survey of British work on Tolstoy up until the 1970s. The whole collection was conceived as a specifically British contribution to the 150th anniversary celebrations. The book is illustrated with a number of little-known photographs of Tolstoy.
