Many Muslim societies are in the throes of tumultuous political transitions, and common to all has been heightened debate over the place of sharia law in modern politics and ethical life. Bringing together leading scholars of Islamic politics, ethics, and law, this book examines the varied meanings and uses of Islamic law, so as to assess the prospects for democratic, plural, and gender-equitable Islamic ethics today. These essays show that, contrary to the claims of some radicals, Muslim understandings of Islamic law and ethics have always been varied and emerge, not from unchanging texts but from real and active engagement with Islamic traditions and everyday life. The ethical debates that rage in contemporary Muslim societies reveal much about the prospects for democratic societies and a pluralist Islamic ethics in the future. They also suggest that despite the tragic violence wrought in recent years by Boko Haram and the Islamic State in Iraq, we may yet see an age of ethical renewal across the Muslim world.

The Making of the Modern Muslim State - Islam and Governance in the Middle East and North Africa (Hardcover): Malika Zeghal The Making of the Modern Muslim State - Islam and Governance in the Middle East and North Africa (Hardcover)

An innovative analysis that traces the continuity of the state’s custodianship of Islam as the preferred religion in the Middle East and North Africa In The Making of the Modern Muslim State, Malika Zeghal reframes the role of Islam in modern Middle East governance. Countering other accounts that claim that Middle Eastern states turned secular in modern times, Zeghal shows instead the continuity of the state’s custodianship of Islam as the preferred religion. Drawing on intellectual, political, and economic history, she traces this custodianship from early forms of constitutional governance in the nineteenth century through post–Arab Spring experiments in democracy. Zeghal argues that the intense debates around the implementation and meaning of state support for Islam led to a political cleavage between conservatives and their opponents that long predated the polarization of the twentieth century that accompanied the emergence of mass politics and Islamist movements. Examining constitutional projects, public spending, school enrollments, and curricula, Zeghal shows that although modern Muslim-majority polities have imported Western techniques of governance, the state has continued to protect and support the religion, community, and institutions of Islam. She finds that even as Middle Eastern states have expanded their nonreligious undertakings, they have dramatically increased their per capita supply of public religious provisions, especially Islamic education—further feeding the political schism between Islamists and their adversaries. Zeghal illuminates the tensions inherent in the partnerships between states and the body of Muslim scholars known as the ulama, whose normative power has endured through a variety of political regimes. Her detailed and groundbreaking analysis, which spans Tunisia, Morocco, Egypt, Turkey, Syria, and Lebanon, makes clear the deep historical roots of current political divisions over Islam in governance.

Islamism in Morocco - The Challenge to Monarchy (Paperback): Malika Zeghal Islamism in Morocco - The Challenge to Monarchy (Paperback)

The attacks in Casablanca in 2003 and Madrid in 2004 startled the West into an awareness of the expanding sphere of influence of North African Islamists. Until recently, Morocco was thought of as a stable pro-Western kingdom and safe tourist destination. Beginning in the 1990s, however, political Islam has brought about turmoil in Morocco, with the Islamist party gaining more and more seats in the elections of 1997 and 2002. Other Islamic groups on the scene include extreme violent jihadists with nebulous goals who challenge the king's traditional function as political and religious leader. These movements are deeply segmented and create a highly explosive atmosphere.""Islamism in Morocco"" highlights the new situation in Morocco and its effects on Europe, including the immigration of an often unwelcome, impoverished Moroccan underclass. The book includes a discussion of the Sept. 2007 election, and recent terrorist threats. The author, Malika Zeghal, situates the events and developments in their historical context and adds the flavor of her many years of experience as a researcher in Morocco, combining historical analysis with personal perspectives in a clear and compelling presentation.
