The German R + D program "Solares Testzentrum Almeria" (SOTA)
provided the scientific basis for the realization of advanced solar
technologies including facility modifications, component tests and
new lines of development. One of the working packages, WP 300,
addressed the "Scientific Support" by the performance of
preparatory studies, exploratory laboratory activities and
qualified expertise. Universities, Research Institutes and Company
R + D Entities in Germany were enabled to treat the following
aspects: * Meteorological, system and cost investigations, *
Development of important components as concentrator, receiver,
storage, * Utilization of solar energy for process heat and
chemical reactions. Besides the continued development of terminal
concentrators, the studies concentrated in 1991 on the development
of solar chemistry processes. The reports of the activities were
finalized recently and collected in the present volume. The final
reports were printed as received. The achieved results and the
views expressed within the reports were under the responsibility of
the authors. As organizers of these solar thermal activities and as
editors of the corresponding final reports, we would like to thank
BMFT and KFA-BEO for the farsighted funding (grant no. 0328823A)
and the research groups for their engagement and consultations. We
would also like to thank Ms S. Preusser and Ms U. Rachow, who among
many others contributed to the realization of this volume.

During the past decade, several heliostat development projects have
been implemented in various parts of the world (MBB, ASINEL, MARTIN
MARIETTA, ARCO SOLAR, etc.). These projects have concen trated on
the segmented glass mirror design, as used in the solar tower
facilities of SSPS (Spain), BARSTOW (USA), THEMIS (France) [1] as
well as in other test and prototype facilities. The main emphasis
in these projects has been on the individually curved glass facets,
on dimensioning, mounting and adjusting them, as well as on th~
structural rigidity of the system as a whole. Particular attention
has had to be paid to developing drive units with minimum play: the
tracking concept generally employed, where the points of rotation
of azimuth and elevation almost coincide, places great demands on
the drive as regards play and tracking accuracy, and has resulted
in some extremely compact, but also some very heavy and expensive
units.

The solar thermal central receiver is a key component of any solar
thermal plant. The efficiency with which a receiver accomplishes
its function is of central interest in solar thermal technology.
Solar thermal receivers have been built, evaluated, and operated in
many countries. These experiences have provided a rich knowledge
base on receiver performance and its evaluation. At the same time,
the variety of methods and approaches used by different researchers
has caused occasional difficulties in the interpretation of
performance evaluation results reported in the literature. The
rationale for this report, therefore, derives from two sources.
First is the need to facilitate the evaluation of the performance
of solar receivers by providing a central document defining
standards for such endeavors; second, to enable an easy
interpretation and comparative evaluation of different receiver
concepts for which performance has been evaluated in different
countries. The primary contribution of this report is deemed to be
the definition of a minimum set of parameters essential for the
evaluation of receiver performance, as well as the selection and
recommendation of the methods that have proved to be the most
successful for the measurement and calculation of these parameters.

The Technology Program GAST was executed from 1981 to 1987 as a
German-Spanish joint program aiming at the development and the
investigation of necessary solar specific components and software
for a gas-cooled tower power station of medium size. After the
tests had been successfully completed at the Plata forma Solar de
Almeria in 1987, the proceedings are now presented to inform the
experts and the public about these developments and their results.
Not intending to anticipate a detailed valuation of the results,
however, we as the project monitors of the Technology program
resume that the intended aims are nearly entirely achieved and that
principally the way for the construction and operation of a gas
cooled solar tower power plant has been prepared. Essential for
this successful completion were not only a promising concept, a
careful design, a precise plan ning, solid fabrication and
installation as well as careful tests, but also the extraordinarily
good cooperation between the engaged companies, institutes,
organisations and advisory groups."
The energy crisis in 1973 and 1979 initiated a great number of
activities and programs for low and high temperature applica tion
of solar energy. Synthetic fuels and chemicals produced by solar
energy is one of them, where temperatures in the range of 600-1000
DegreesC or even higher are needed. In principle such high
temperatures can be produced in solar towers. For electricity
production, the feasibility and operation of solar tower plants has
been examined during the SSPS - project (Small Solar Power System)
in Almeria, Spain. The objective of Solar Thermal Energy
Utilization is to extend the experience from the former SSPS -
program in to the field of solar produced synthetic fuels. New
materials and technolo gies have to be developed in order to
research this goal. Metallic components now in use for solar
receivers need to be improved with respect to transient operation
or possibly replaced by ceramics. High temperature processes, like
steam-methane reforming, coal conversion and hydrogen produc tion
need to be developed or at least adapted for the unconven tional
solar operation. Therefore Solar Thermal Energy Utiliza tion is a
long term program, which needs time for its develop ment much more
time than the intervals expected in between further energy crisis.
The "Studies on Technology and Applica tion on Solar Energy
Utilization" is a necessary step in the right direction in order to
prepare for the energy problems in the future.

These volumes present the Proceedings of the "Third Interna tional
Workshop on Solar Thermal Central Receiver Systems" or ganized by
the DFVLR and held in Konstanz, Federal Republic of Germany, June,
1986. The Workshop was the continuation of the conferences in
Claremont, USA, 1982 and in Varese, Italy, 1984 on the subject of
"Central Receiver Projects" and of the con ferences in Stuttgart,
Federal Republic of Germany, 1983 and in Atlanta, USA, 1985 on the
subject of "High Temperature Solar Technology and Application." The
success of the Workshop was indicated by the participation of 113
scientists from 11 nations. The Workshop was mainly ad dressed to
persons actively working in the field of "Solarthermal." But also
participants from neighboring areas of investigation were welcomed,
e.g. those from Photovoltaics who deal with temperature effects.
Several small Solar Thermal Power Plants have been successfully
operated in recent years; their results enable the scientific and
technical community to judge on technical viabilities, as sess
operational characteristics, and evaluate and extrapolate thermal
and electrical performances. Summarizing and comparing these
experiences was the topic of the first part of the Work shop which
dealt with "Plants.""

erzielt. Zu diesen Technologien zahlen: - Rinnenkollektorkraftwerke
(kurz "Farmanlagen") - Turmkraftwerke (kurz "Turmanlagen") -
Parabolspiegelanlagen mit Stirlingmaschinen (kurz
"Dish/Stirlinganlagen") - Aufwindkraftwerke.
verwendet und fehlende Daten analytisch (u.a. mittels
einheitlich definierten Vergleichsmethode gewahrleistet. Heute
Juni 1989 in
Koeln, dokumentiert.
gestellte qualitativ hochwertige Strahlungsenergie geringer Dichte
bundesdeutschen Teilnehmer der Task VI "Long Term Solar Fuels and
Chemicals" des IEA-SSPS-Programms (SSPS = Small Solar Power
Systems).
weiterzuentwickeln, was im kleinen Kreise bereits andiskutiert
"lEA-Workshop on Long-Range R&D-Opportunities for Renewable
Energy" in Charmey, Schweiz, im September 1988 angesprochen worden
waren. Die solare Detoxifizierung von Problemabfallen ist ein
potent i- ell attraktiver Schwerpunkt aus dem Spektrum zahlreicher
Anwen- dungen der Solarenergie fur chemische und
physikalisch-chemische Verfahren, deren Praktikabilitat es
auszuloten gilt.
