The extensive use of little known electronic principles provides something like the Science of Electronics supplementing the Art of Electronics without involvement of too much theory. Whereas art can only be acquired by doing, the knowledge provided by science can be acquired from books. The ready availability of integrated circuits for practically any application reduces the art of electronics to the art of interfacing these integrated components. The practical knowledge required for that art can only be acquired by doing and not by reading. However, it takes a lot of knowledge to select the best integrated component for achieving a specific goal. Such knowledge is provided in this book. By using a holistic approach in the understanding of the various circuits and by taking ample advantage of the duality between the electrical quantities voltage and current, the understanding of the properties of electronic circuits is made easier. Besides, this approach reduces the amount of mathematics needed for a deeper understanding. Thus, this book is appropriate for scholars at the advanced undergraduate level. In particular, the important aspects of positive and negative feedback in circuits are presented in a compact way by introducing the reverse closed-loop-gain. It is quite clear that a single book cannot cover all aspects of both analog and digital electronics, the latter comprising all circuits needed for data manipulation in digital computers- which is a field in itself.

Dealing with Uncertainties is an innovative monograph that lays special emphasis on the deductive approach to uncertainties and on the shape of uncertainty distributions. This perspective has the potential for dealing with the uncertainty of a single data point and with sets of data that have different weights. It is shown that the inductive approach that is commonly used to estimate uncertainties is in fact not suitable for these two cases. The approach that is used to understand the nature of uncertainties is novel in that it is completely decoupled from measurements. Uncertainties which are the consequence of modern science provide a measure of confidence both in scientific data and in information in everyday life. Uncorrelated uncertainties and correlated uncertainties are fully covered and the weakness of using statistical weights in regression analysis is discussed. The text is abundantly illustrated with examples and includes more than 150 problems to help the reader master the subject.

Urn aber fur eine gestellte meBtechnische Aufgabe die elek- tronischen Anforderungen richtig abzuschatzen bzw. die Moglichkeiten einer vorgegebenen Apparatur zu erkennen, muB der experimentelle Wissen- schaftler bereits uber eine beachtliche Kenntnis der Elektronik verfugen. Auch die Fahigkeit, bei einer MiBfunktion eines elektronischen Gerates den Fehler erkennen, lokalisieren und beheben zu konnen, ist in der Praxis einer effektiven Forschungsarbeit von groBter Wichtigkeit. SchlieBlich erfordert die Kombination verschiedener MeBeinheiten, die oft von verschiedenen Herstellern stammen, ein genaues Verstandnis der Anpassungsbedingungen; die Befahigung, wo notig, einfache Ubergangseinheiten selbst herstellen zu konnen, erspart viel Zeit und Geldmittel. Der zunehmende Einsatz integrierter Bauelemente in den letzten Jahren ermoglicht es einerseits, komplexe elektronische Anlagen in sehr kompakter Bauweise zu konstruieren, kommt aber andererseits auch der elektronischen Betatigung der Wissenschaftler entgegen, deren Ziel nicht die Entwicklung elektronischer Apparaturen ist, sondern fur die diese nur unentbehrliche Hilfsgerate darstellen. Denn bei Verwendung dieser integrierten Elemente erfolgt die Dimensionierung fast zur Ganze durch den Hersteller, der bereits funktionsfahige Baueinheiten zur Verfugung stellt. Es genugt dann, uber die allgemein giiltigen elektronischen Grundlagen Bescheid zu wissen, urn in Verbindung mit den technischen Daten der verwendeten Elemente zu einem Verstandnis der vorliegenden Schaltungen zu kommen.
