While the efficiency and sustainability offensive is in full swing in most sectors of the economy, in the construction sector it is still in its very beginnings - economically as well as ecologically. However, politicians and policymakers at the global, European, and national levels have begun to address this deficit and are seeking to correct it with legal requirements and laws like EnEV, building certifications, and competitions. Following the proven model of earlier manuals in the series, the Energy Manual presents a comprehensive look at the constructional parameters of energy efficiency and sustainability. It offers an advance look at the legal regulations being planned by the EU, and - as a tool ready for immediate use by architects, engineers, and designers in their daily work - it points the way toward the efficient and sustainable construction and operation of buildings. With its focus on the entire lifecycle of a building, it provides an integrated perspective - a necessary prerequisite for sustainable economic management.
The Materiality of buildings and constructions is an important aspect of architectural design. The approach to and use of materials is a fundamental building block of architectural training. Themes: Subjective effect of materials Haptic influences Use of materials Creative use of classical construction materials
Sustainability has become a guiding principle of the twenty-first century. For the architectural office Bob Gysin + Partner BGP, this is not only an ecological premise but also stimulates and drives its architectural work. They have been setting standards with this approach for forty years and count among the leaders and pioneers in the European architecture scene. The catalogue presents their modes of thought and methods and provides insight into their planning and implementation practices, which can be attributed to the uniqueness of their projects-from the Chriesbach aquatic research institute to the new headquarters of Greenpeace. It is furthermore an opportunity to address the simultaneous practice of architecture and art and their interconnectedness with sustainability. At the same time, it repeatedly succeeds in transgressing boundaries as well as connecting social involvement and cultural relevance with one another.
Study on the first residential cluster for students that meets an energy-plus standard. Documents various developmental stages of production. CUBITY was presented at Solar Decathlon Europe 2014, Versailles. CUBITY is the first modular residential cluster for students worldwide that meets an energy-plus standard. This innovative spatial concept is based on a house-within-a-house principle, with very minimised individual rooms and maximised communal areas with different temperature zones under one roof. It therefore enables transitions from the individual to the communal, from the small to the large, from the whole to the divided as a synthesis of the key motifs cube, city and community. The publication documents various stages of the development of the spatial concept at the architecture faculty of TU Darmstadt, as well as the presentation at Solar Decathlon Europe 2014 in Versailles. CUBITY provides exemplary solutions for sociological and energy issues and combines contemporary forms of communal living with sustainability aspects. Text in English and German.

Today, careful energy planning and design has become an integral component of every building task. The second volume of the SCALE series, Heat | Cool, picks up at precisely this point, providing strategies for an energetically sensible and suitable approach to building conditioning as well as its design and constructional integration. In addition to building and facilities services, it places special emphasis on construction and design measures. How much the building itself can achieve in the context of the given climatic, topographical, and town-planning framework conditions and to what extent additional installations are required for conditioning, which construction measures are appropriate for which types of tasks within a sustainable and integrated planning approach - all of these topics are discussed on the basis of project examples. The book highlights both the currently available heating, ventilation, and cooling systems as well as the supporting aspects of material properties and the building lifecycle, thus enabling the reader to make a balanced and well-informed selection. Heat | Cool provides a foundation for efficient and optimal building conditioning and its integration into construction and design.
