The primary focus of this book, accordingly, is to provide insight
into the fundamentals, applications, manufacturing aspects and
properties (mechanical, thermal, electrical etc.) of metal foams.
Their potential applications in various small- as well as
large-scale industries are highlighted. The present book also
focuses on aspects of designing simple structures by taking into
account loading conditions under tensile, compressive or torsional
stress for metals and their foams. In view of theoretical analysis,
clear explanation is provided as how metal foams can exhibit better
structural properties when compared to their parent metal. It is
hoped that the present book, in view of significant application
potential of metal foams in near future, will be extremely useful
to students and academicians in tertiary institutes and researchers
working in research labs who are attempting to find lightweight
solutions.

It is a privilege to introduce the reader to this book, as I
believe that it will make a signi?cant contribution to, given the
dif?culties in the knowledge of the Indian Ocean, developing
cooperation in the Indian Ocean region. There have been numerous
failed efforts at regional cooperation in different fora in the
Indian Ocean. As a result of the land-based orientation of the
people in the region, the importance for countries to develop the
power to govern the sea has largely been ignored. The maritime
approach taken by Manoj Gupta to the Indian Ocean as a region in
international relations offers a timely and critical assessment of
the potential for regional cooperation and ocean governance. The
political leadership in the region can no longer ignore the need
for coop- ation in maritime affairs in the Indian Ocean. This book
enriches the literature on Indian Ocean issues as it argues
convincingly that the security of nations, economic well-being of
the people and health of the Indian Ocean cannot be divested from
one another. All are fundamentally dependant on the ability of the
countries in the region to individually and collectively exert the
power to govern the sea.

This book critically summarizes the effects of various suitable
alloying elements and particulate reinforcements on mechanical and
degradation properties of pure Mg and Mg alloys targeting
biomedical applications. The suitability of alloying elements and
particulate reinforcements are discussed based on their levels of
toxic effects on human body. First attempt is made to study and
discuss on the various available synthesizing techniques for
fabrication of both impermeable and porous Mg materials. Further,
more emphasis on development of new magnesium matrix nanocomposites
(MMNC) is made owing to the similarities between natural bone and
MMNCs as bio-"nanocomposite". The information on synthesis,
toxicity of alloying elements and reinforcements and their effects
on mechanical and degradation properties of pure Mg will enable the
researchers to effectively design Mg alloys and composites
targeting biomedical applications.
