After a successful tour of the Central European cabarets, flamenco dancer Juan Martinez and his partner Sole were caught by surprise in Russia by the revolutionary events of February of 1917. Unable to leave the country, in St. Petersburg, Moscow, and Kiev they suffered the fall-out of the October Revolution and the bloody civil war that followed. The great Spanish journalist Manuel Chaves Nogales met Martinez in Paris and, shocked by the stories he shared, decided to compile them. The result is this book which narrates the changes the protagonists were faced with and how they figured out a way to survive. Its pages include traveling artists, prodigal Russian dukes, German spies, Chekist assassins, and speculators of a different ilk. "
In November of 1936, Manuel Chaves Nogales, disheartened by the course of the civil war, decides to leave Spain and go live with his family in Paris. Once there he collaborates with both French and Latin American presses, and even begins a small publication about the current Spanish situation aimed at Republican exiles. Knowing he has been targeted by the Gestapo, mere days before the Nazis invade Paris in 1940, Chaves Nogales leaves the city for Bordeaux and then London, where he will remain until his death. In this work, Chaves Nogales draws on his own knowledge as well as the numerous testimonials he had access to in Paris in order to try to explain the reasons that drove France to succumb to Fascism and sign an armistice with Germany in June of 1940. His vast experience in international matters and his extraordinary ability to interpret current events help him outline a lucid account about how the country that had been a beacon of democracy around the world for over a century handed itself over to Nazism. "
Chaves Nogales met Juan Belmonte shortly before publishing this book, and, even though he was not a bullfighting aficionado, the two men hit it off immediately. His warmth, fighting spirit, and conciliatory mood, rare in Spanish society at the time, were some of the qualities that attracted the author and inspired him to write the famous bullfighter's biography. In the narration, the voices of the biographer and the subject blend together, so that it is difficult to discern when one begins to speak and the other stops, and this style makes Belmonte's memories unravel with astonishing ease: his infancy in Seville, the difficult years dedicated to learning, the picturesque aspects of the bullfighting and literary circles, fame, his rivalry with Joselito. This is the acute and faithful testimonial of an era, a masterpiece resulting from the encounter between two extraordinary people: Juan Belmonte, founder of modern bullfighting, and Chaves Nogales, one of the most important Spanish journalists of the first half of the twentieth century.
