This title was first published in 2002: This volume demonstrates
that international action for democracy does not solely rest on
American democracy promotion strategies, but that it actually
depends on a variety of global actors and interactions. It is
suitable for policy experts, non-governmental organizations,
international aid agencies and courses on international relations
theory, comparative politics, and Latin American politics. The
book: introduces a theoretical framework about the effect of
international norms on democracy promotion; connects the role of
international institutions and norms with advocacy movements in
shaping the mobilization to promote democracy; analyses the
relationship between the international dimension of democracy
promotion and democratization; explains the effect of international
democracy promotion in the political transition of Nicaragua from
1979 to 2001; and brings into analysis the various modalities of
democracy promotion and their effects.
How do the foreign policy priorities of Latino Americans relate to
U.S. foreign policy in general and U.S. policy toward Latin America
in particular? Public policy elites and the general U.S. public
doubt the depth of Latino patriotism, suspecting Latinos of
representing their homelands' interests over and above those of the
U.S. Through a series of studies surveying Latinos throughout the
U.S., this book demonstrates that Latino Americans are more like
other Americans with respect to foreign policy than is popularly
assumed. At the same time, differences between and among various
Latino communities (e.g., those with ties to Colombia, the
Dominican Republic, El Salvador, and Mexico) exist, and may be a
source of growing Latino political power perhaps more relevant to
domestic politics than to foreign policy.

In our globalizing world, the movement of people and resources has
accelerated, giving rise to transnational connections and
interdependencies. "New Patterns for Mexico" examines novel and
emerging patterns of United States giving to Mexico and its impact
on equitable development. Last year alone, Mexican migrants living
in the United States sent billions of dollars back to families and
relatives living in Mexico. Most of these funds were for private
consumption, but more and more diaspora resources support social
and philanthropic endeavors in their country of origin. This
bilingual volume asks: What are these new patterns of diaspora
giving and how do they affect equitable development in Mexico?
Through its Global Philanthropy Program, the Global Equity
Initiative of Harvard University aims to advance knowledge about
global philanthropy and the role of private philanthropic
investments in furthering global equity. This volume, one in a
series on diaspora giving, builds upon the earlier work of
"Diaspora Philanthropy: Perspectives on India and China" and
continues the Program's research series on the relationship between
diaspora engagement and equitable development.

Description in English]
Latin America and the Caribbean: Development, migration and
remittances
Migrants are now more essentially and directly involved in various
economic and social activities with their countries of origin. This
is partly due to the dynamic of globalization and the new
opportunities resulting from the political and economic opening of
their home societies. Remittances have an effect on finances, and
therefore on the economy and development, and in a competitive
context they also seek to increase the availability of income
through saving and spending. By increasing saving, remittances
influence the ability to generate assets, and thus create
possibilities for saving per se as well as investment in activities
such as housing. In this sense, remittances serve as a factor that
helps to increase the liquid and fixed assets of those who receive
them. This publication is part of a decade-long study involving
field research and project implementation that gathers and analyzes
information on the way money transfers affect economies,
communities and families in receiver countries in Latin America and
the Caribbean. The book offers an analysis of trends in the
relationship between remittances and development in the case of
Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as an empirical,
theoretical and policy-based approach to the topic. Family
remittances involve the sending of money by immigrants to their
families in their country of origin as a source of income. This
money is part of a global context associated with migratory
processes and operates within a reality in which these transfers,
and their impact on those who receive them and their countries,
have become worthy of analysis.
