The book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 17th European Conference on Genetic Programming, Euro GP 2014, held in Grenada, Spain, in April 2014 co-located with the Evo*2014 events, Evo BIO, Evo COP, Evo MUSART and Evo Applications. The 15 revised full papers presented together with 5 poster papers were carefully reviewed and selected form 40 submissions. The wide range of topics in this volume reflects the current state of research in the field. Thus, we see topics as diverse as search-based software engineering, image analysis, dynamical systems, evolutionary robotics and operational research to the foundations of search as characterized through semantic variation operators.

Las Metaloproteasas de Matriz son un grupo de enzimas cuya funcion mas conocida consiste en la degradacion de las membranas basales, pero juegan un importante papel en todos los pasos de la cadena de desarrollo y progresion tumorales. La MMP-9 es una de las metaloproteasas mas estudiadas, y ha demostrado valor como marcador diagnostico y pronostico en varias estirpes tumorales. En el caso del Cancer de Prostata la medida de los niveles de MMP-9 tisulares ha demostrado una relacion directa con la presencia de tumor, ademas de con factores pronosticos como el grado Gleason o el PSA. El estudio de los niveles de MMP-9 sanguineos ha aportado hasta ahora resultados contradictorios, probablemente por deficiencias en el diseno de los estudios realizados. El presente estudio muestra la relacion existente entre los niveles de MMP-9 sericos y la presencia o ausencia del cancer de prostata, asi como la relacion entre la MMP-9 y diversos factores pronosticos."

Desde que el uso del PSA para el diagnostico precoz del Cancer Prostatico se generalizo, el perfil del Cancer Prostatico diagnosticado ha cambiado. En la actualidad, se ha incrementado la incidencia de tumores prostaticos sin significacion clinica. Ademas existe un solapamiento del Cancer Prostatico con la Hiperplasia Benigna de Prostata, enfermedad benigna que tambien incrementa los niveles de PSA. En este contexto se hace necesario precisar mas el diagnostico del Cancer prostatico con el fin de evitar pruebas invasivas innecesarias y diagnosticar tumores prostaticos con relevancia clinica. En este trabajo se analizan el uso de variantes geneticas de la Metaloproteasa de matriz 9 que podrian complementar al PSA en el diagnostico del Cancer prostatico. Se trata del analisis de los 100 primeros casos de un estudio a mayor escala. Se analizan los problemas actuales del diagnostico del Cancer Prostatico asi como la implicacion de las metaloproteasas de matriz en el desarrollo tumoral y su relacion con el diagnostico del Cancer prostatico."

It is the summer of 1936, the early months of the agonising civil war that engulfs Spain and shakes the rest of the world. In a prison in the pilgrim city of Santiago de Compostela, an artist sketches the famous porch of the cathedral, the Pórtico da Gloria. He uses a carpenter's pencil. But instead of reproducing the sculptured faces of the prophets and elders, he draws the faces of his fellow Republican prisoners.

Many years later in post-Franco Spain, a survivor of that period, Doctor Daniel da Barca, returns from exile to his native Galicia, and the threads of past memories begin to be woven together. This poetic and moving novel conveys the horror and savagery of the tragedy that divided Spain, and the experiences of the men and women who lived through ti.
