This volume constitutes the proceedings of the 7th European
Knowledge Acquisition Workshop (EKAW 93), held in Toulouse and
Caylus, France, in September 1993. Traditionally the EKAW workshops
deal with the various aspects of knowledge acquisition as a crucial
topic in artificial intelligence as well as in computer science,
engineering in general, and cognitive science. EKAW 93 had ist
emphasis on knowledge acquisition for knowledge-based systems;
besides the scientific workshop on the inter- disciplinary topic of
knowledge acquisition there also was offered an open day as a
users' forum open to the public. This proceedings contains the best
papers presented at the scientific workshop after they had been
selected by an international program committee consisting of
leading experts in the field. The volume includes two surveys by
Guy Boy and Brian Gaines and is divided in two main parts: the
first part on problem solving models has sections on building
steps, support tools, and comparison of approaches; the second part
on life cycle and methodologies is divided in sections on
refinement, methodologies, workbenches, and elicitation techniques.

Methodological knowledge acquisition and knowledge engineering have
achievedincreasing attention in recent years due both to active
research projects and to successful practical applications. Both
aspects have over the years been reflected in the structure of the
European Knowledge Acquisition Workshops (EKAW), where a users'
forum has always been combined with a scientific workshop. This
volume contains the proceedings of EKAW-92. The papers are
organized into five thematic sectionson: - Technology transfer -
General modelling approaches - Knowledgeformalization and automated
methods - Elicitation and diagnosis of human knowledge - Practice
and experiences of knowledge acquisition. A total of 65 persons
from around the world served as the program committee. Their
recommendations and sometimes very detailed comments helped both
workshop organizers and individual authors to achieve the high
quality reflected in this volume.
Die Informationstechnologie im Zeitalter nach Gutenberg bedeutet
neue Herausforderungen fur Autoren, Journalisten und
Medienschaffende jeglicher Provenienz.
Zufalligkeiten konkreter Autorensysteme haften bleibt. Das Buch
bleibt auf seine Weise aktuell und grundlegend gleichermassen.
